Gallery of log for Dooleys Heritage Trail #12 - Southern Gates
Having found #11, we continued the rather demanding walk through the ravine with sections of quite steep descent followed by steep ascent. We caught occasional glimpses of the river below but nothing that would make a good photo. Again we found a rather large limb over the track but it was removed with little problem. As we walked along together we compared readings on our two GPS units - quite often there was a 30m difference between them, further evidence of the difficulty of getting reliable GPS signals in the area. When we got within 80m of where our GPS though GZ should be, we looked for locations consistent with hint. We found one location but no joy. Then we noticed an even better match for the hint (we hadn't seen this from the track) and a little exploration revealed the cache - another FTF at 10:15am. Again the cache and it's contents were in good condition. As we signed the log and replaced the cache both our Garmin GPS units just couldn't settle and over 5 minutes, indicated that we were anywhere between 4m and 29m from GZ. This is just further evidence of the fickle nature of GPS signals in the area and the need to use the very precise hints provided. Thanks Sirius Tas - we were really enjoying the recent additions to Dooleys Heritage Trail.
Rated: for Overall Experience.
