Logs for Blackpete

This jetty is at the south end of Seneca Lake in the village of Watkins Glen, New York. We spend our summers about 15 miles north of here on the east side of the lake and many days venture to Watkins Glen to hike through the gourge, walk the streets showing signs of the original race car route, or walking the Finger Lakes Trail. We usually begin our journey near this jetty and return here after our trek through the gorge and to our favorite spot on the FLT where we hid a cache "The Black Spot".

Hinckley Reservoir/Dam

The Dam at Hinckley holds the water supply for Oneida County - Utica, New York and surrounding areas. Construction completed in 1914 and water storage began 3/1914. Its capacity is 3,320 mil square feet. The crest at the spillway is 1225 with a length of 400 feet. The area at the crest is 4.45 square miles.

The water entering the reservoir comes from Black Creek which has its origins in the High Peaks of the Adirondak Mountains where there is likely a lot of snow that still will melt and flow into this reservoir. The water passes over the dam to the West Canada Creek onto Trenton Falls an area that uses the rapidly moving water for the production of electricity.

There was no water flowing over the dam today. The surface of the lake is still primarily frozen. Water is being drained from below the dam.

30 Mile Point Light is at the northern most point of the Lake Ontario southern shore. It was built in 1875, first lit on 4/27/1876. It protected ships from the sandbar that extended from 30 mile point. Before its construction, there were several historic shipwrecks on the sandbar. The US Lighthouse Service operated the light until 7/1/39 when the USCG took over the operations.
