Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781) .
Dramatist, aesthetician, and critic, the main representative of the Enlightenment in Germany. Lessing has been called the true founder of modern German literature. His most famous dramas are Miss Sara Sampson (1755), a domestic tragedy, Minna von Barnhelm (1755), a comedy about honor, marriage, and pretense, and Nathan the Wise (1779), set in Jerusalem during the Crusades.
He moved to Hamburg and assisted in the founding of the Nationaltheater, which was funded by a group of merchants. The project did not gain success. However, Lessing published his reviews of the performances under the title Hamburgische Dramaturgie (1767-69). In it he attacked the formalism of neoclassicism, and the French classical theater which dominated the German stage. One of Lessing's targets was Voltaire, whose tragedies he criticized and praised the genius of Shakespeare. In Hamburg he also run with his friend a printing and publishing company. To cover his debts Lessing had to sell his own private library.

St. Nikolai developed in connection with the establishment of the port of hamburg and the new city under count Adolph III.. Buyers and sailors, who lived in the new city, asked the count for a chapel, which the protection patron of the sailors, who should be consecrated to the holy Nikolaus. The chapel is documented for the first time 1195. Probably it already existed before. Until 1353 it had become a larger church in the gotic style.
St. Nikolai was also an engine of the reformation. Thus 1526 already required the citizens that the main ministers should be used by church jurors and not by the cathedral chapter.
The church remained a half millenium until the large fire destroyed it 1842 completely. The today still visible 147 meters high church tower - the third-highest in the german territory - is the remainder of a new building, build 1846 to 1874 in direct proximity of the burned out church. 1943 St. Nikolai were heavily damaged the second time during the allied operation gomorrha The arches and and also the imposante organ were destroyed and the entire wood equipment were falled victim to the fire. The today's ruin condition however is the result of the break-ups in the fifties. From then on and remained the tower was a Torso. The ruin remained as memorial.
