Description

Take a photo of something that has defeated the oddsshoots

Often whilst Geocaching I will see a tree that to all intents and purposes should not be alive, yet some small defiant part of that tree has continued the struggle to survive and sent up new shoots, against all odds.

I saw such a tree this week that I thought was dead. All the lower part of the tree appeared to be as dead as a doornail, until I noticed some greenery right up the top.

In 2018 we visited The Western Lost City and discovered amazing sandstone formations. Among the formations was this tree with a magnificent root system. Growing against the odds.

Logging for the Cacheopoly Game.

This spinach plant has thrived in a crack in my driveway for most of this year so far. Under the black asphalt is a concrete slab so there is no depth for the root to go. I have been harvesting it when I need a leaf of spinach. Very Happy

What's the odds of seeing goats in a tree. We did whilst riding around Morocco. It seems that they eat the nuts and leaves off the tree. Then they defecate the nuts of argan fruit. These are retrieved from the goats' manure and turned into Argon oil. Interested ladies. Thanks Val for this one

Have two examples for this cache. The first is a tree that we came across while caching in Henslowes Reserve near Ulverstone last week. The tree had been uprooted for some time but there were a couple of trees growing out of it.
The second is in our own garden and is a weed that I have pulled from the side of one of our manfern trunks time and time again but I can't get rid of it. I don't want to spray it as that might kill the manfern. I have dug it out with a knife but that doesn't work either. It's a persistent little buggar.
Thanks.

We were caching in the Castra Falls area south of Ulverstone in Tassie. It is a lovely yet rugged area with very rough tracks. The landscape is dominated by dolerite rock outcrops which are largely covered by moss, little else. To our amazement we came across quite a large tree growing defiantly on a moss covered rock outcrop. From what we could see, the roots had penetrated a crack in the outcrop and were sufficient to allow this tree, not only to grow, but flourish. Apart from the moss, nothing else with a root system grew in the immediate area showing that this tree had defied the odds. A photo of the tree has been added to the Gallery. Thanks Cybergran V for the cache.

I have a pebble path and often a plant , namely a weed will grow where there is no soil or regular water supply. Why is it weeds will grow where plants I actually plant in better conditions die!!

The countryside between Duchess and Dajarra in western Qld is pretty barren. While driving this road we spotted a little dot of green and stopped for a look - it was a green little plant. How does it survive in this harsh landscape?

I have seen a few trees which have defeated the odds, so thought I would share one of them here in order to claim this locationless Smile
Hope this pic are what you are looking for in this cache! The tree was growing in a cutting, the rock cliff was about 30 metres tall

Another recent odd that was defeated was finding a cache that was archived 8 years ago, especially given the fact that it was only metres away from a public carpark in the middle of a suburb!

Thanks

Hi Cybergran V
As this is a Locationless cache; I thought a caching story was appropriate
While doing cache GC7V2AY "The Devil 17" I made the required tree climb only to find the cache gone and only the nail it was supposed to hang on up the tree
The base of the tree was surrounded with blackberries, litter, sticks etc. A search of 15 to 20 mins resulted in a find and the continued survival of the cache;
My log for that cache explains why this cache is "something that has defeated the oddsshoots"
My log read:
"Hi Budge
Flagged this cache for a find today
Climb the tree but only found a nail on which the cache container should have been hanging
Descended and proceeded to search around the tree and just as I was about to give up on finding it; the little varmint showed itself.
The obligatory process was completed and then another ascent was made to place the container where it should be hidden.
Sainted and replaced at 1247 hours
Favourites point from me

Love how flowers manage to appear in big areas of concrete through the small cracks. Feel like they are real survivors.

When I published an earlier Cache today I noticed the GA number was one year short of my birthday. I wondered what the odds were of publishing another to see if it could be that number.
Odds defeated - I was born on the 13th in the year 44.
Besides you might need an easy O this month
