Description

A walk in the Rainforest in the Botanical Gardens.

The first GCA cache in the extensive George Brown Darwin Botanical Gardens.

The Botanical Gardens cover some 42 hectares close to the business district of Darwin.

The land now used by the gardens was originally set aside in 1870 as a fruit and vegetable garden to reduce the colony's dependence on irregular shipments.

The gardens were named in honour of the late George Brown who was Darwin's longest serving Mayor (1992 -2002) and worked very hard to turn his vision of a green and lush Darwin into a reality and who passed away in January 2002.

As curator of the gardens he was very active in getting the gardens reestablished after most of its trees had been destroyed by Cyclone Tracy in December 1974.

The tree canopy might make it difficult for the GPS to gain a good signal, hence the difficulty rating, but if you use the hint it should not be a difficult find.

Public access to the gardens car parking area is from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm daily. Access by foot however, is granted around the clock, however I would not recommend doing this cache at night. While the gardens are wheelchair accessible the cache is beyond the reach of such a limited cacher.

It might pay to bring some mozzie repellent with you, especially during the wet season.

So enjoy a little bit of history in a peaceful setting.

The cache is very child friendly and there is plenty to look at and learn about, while you take in the verdant surroundings.

As always enjoy the cache and stay safe.

The cache seems to have gone.

Next trip to Darwin we shall see about activating it again.

Thanks to all who have tried for this one

Last found 6 years ago. Confident saying this one is gone....

This hasn't been found in a very long time, and the GPS was very jumpy so while I can't say it isn't there I can say I looked in vain. Saw some seriously big spiders which put a bit of a dampner on my caching enthusiasm. Thanks anyway the Johnos.

Hmm, not really a regular, more of a small, but after searching through most of the options, where I found it was the most logical spot.

WanderingAus wandered by on day 54 of our annual Climatic Refugee trip, after dropping the WanderingMrs (aka SWMBO) at the stop for the free Casino Bus I had almost 6 hours of caching time available. I decided to have another crack at this cache, and when I got near GZ I saw that the large tree which had been felled by Cyclone Carlos, which battered Darwin and the Top End on 15 February 2011, had been removed, exposing an area I'd been unable to access on my last visit.

I've included a photo of a pair of trees which were felled by the ferocious storm. One has been trimmed down, the other is still complete, but on it's side exposing it's roots.

I knew I was looking for a REGULAR sized cache, so there weren't a lot of places it could possibly be hidden, could it? After almost giving up I checked one last very small crevice, and found another of those smallest Sistema containers for a fairly slow find, and due to advice from the owner it was a GAFF 4 find, although if not for the fallen tree I'd have found it as a GAFF 0.

My find No 3759, Third To Find, LCC, TNLNSL, dropped my WanderingAus Happy New Year 2008 Gold GC and my WanderingAus GeoMobile TB in for a visit before grabbing them back again.

The owner needs to update the size to reflect the actual (MICRO) size.

WanderingAus wandered by on day 24 of our annual Climatic Refugee trip, after dropping the WanderingMrs (aka SWMBO) at Coconut Grove Senior Cits for another couple of hours of line dancing, and spent a good 20 minutes attempting a GAFF 0 find of the cache without success. All I knew was the name, the size, and the difficulty and terrain. I checked every log, tree and rock for about 20 metres from my fairly consistent GZ and couldn't come up with the goods. Even ignoring the "wheelchair accessable" terrain 1 ratingand extending to 10 metres either side of the path didn't reveal anything.

I decided it was time to read the cache description, which led me to the hint, so I re-checked all possible areas pointed to by the hint, again without success. At that stage I looked at the log summary, and saw that there were two DNFs and two finds, so I read the latest two logs. Oh dear, the last find was only 53 weeks ago, it couldn't possibly have been muggled this quickly, I've just lost my touch. After all, a Regular sized container is extremely easy to hide.

Lots of trouble with the GPS signal. I had the clue with me but we ran out of time to investigate more thoroughly (sadly it was far too quick a trip to the gardens). We hoped to get back while in Darwin but didn't make it Sad

Finally found it, after multiple loops of the GPS-unfriendly rainforest!! No wonder I had trouble - the GPS still had me 27 mtrs away when i finally got to GZ (thanks to Land Locked Sailors for a very strong clue!)
I was determined to find this as my last Darwin geocache, before flying back south tomorrow Sadand what a perfect afternoon - there were 2 wedding parties in separate sections of the gardens, what a great setting!)

My second FTF... Took a while, though. TN LN most certainly signed the log. The heavy foliage cover made it a bit harder. Sorry, Rock-hopper!

Looks like I'm going to be first to log a DNF for this one! I pondered long and hard, and searched in areas that didn't require me leaving the well-defined path, but to no avail. The GPS goes crazy under these trees, jumped from 5 to 95mtrs in 1 step! I'll try again soon.
