Description
Reverse Geocache
What is it?
This youtube video is of an American one and explains the concept well
Basically I give you the cache and you have to take it to the secret GZ location to open it. It contains a GPS, LCD, batteries and a button. When you press the button it turns on, tells you how far away from the secret GZ location you are and turns off. If you are at GZ it opens. And after three distances have been calculated it stops telling you how far away you are. If you don't know where GZ is by this stage you get a DNF...
So how do you get it?
See below in the logs for who's currently got it
Then send me an email, see me at an event or leave a note on this page and I will arrange some way of getting it to you.
Note: This is NOT to be passed from cacher to cacher. It has to come back to me between finders so I can reset it and change GZ location.
It will usually be somewhere in Adelaide but will travel to other parts of the state when I do. I will post a note on this page if I'm taking it somewhere with me.
If your visiting Adelaide from interstate send me an email and I will arrange to have it available while your here.
Swaps
Ok, the number of swaps in the cache is getting a bit ridiculous. So much so that they interfere with the opening mechanism and make it impossible to get the lid shut. So can people please not add swaps to the cache unless they take one that is physically bigger out.
This is the forum topic about it
Thanks to winterdragon for testing it for me
If you have enjoyed this cache please press the "Recommend" button on the right side of the page! (After logging your find that is!)

Logs
In Adelaide for a couple of days so contacted the CO who kindly offered to drop the cache to me at the GC event last night. I did some work on it on the way back to the hotel and came up with a Likely GZ. Headed down this morning with one try left and got the message I was hoping for.
Added my name to the book and now to arrange return
Thanks so much for this great cache.
*Overall Experience: 5*
Please send me a message if there is a way we can make this work ?
Thanks,
Mummy Short Legs
Clear skies!
Thanks for the fun experience with this marvellous piece of technology LL, definitely a good way to spend some time after a dinner event & before the 2.30 am planned flash mob [^]
Cheers
Luckly the cache opens even after use of all attempts:P coz I used them all.
my first reading of the screen was on Dr. Owls event. unfortunately I didnt take note of exact coord ... wich is critical for calculation. ... 3056m
second at home... 8284m
third on the way to work 84m
fourth next day 155m ( dam I choose the wrong one, should think about it more)
fifth coordinates were based on last two readings and took me under trees :/ where it took ages get satlock and result in msg. u failed!
sixth attempt was just 10m next to my GZ in open area. surprisingly number of sat. was for while only one. but luckly for me the cache OPENED!
with sence of satisfaction I signed log book and safely closed.
Thank you Ben for the experience
With two plausible locations I went to what I thought was the less likely but slightly closer one first and was happily surprised with a congratulation message on my third press. Log signed and cache re-closed it was now a matter of organising to return it.
Thanks Laighside Legends for the challenge and for being so accommodating for those of us only on town for a short time.
First press - 14.2km
Second press - 200m (woo hoo!)
Third press - 150m
Fourth press - 300m
Final press - CONGRATULATIONS
Boy that was close! This was a fantastic cache and I'd recommend it to anyone. Thanks LL!
Walking
1st (a) try in the carpark over the Central market, could not get a sat lock so it timed out.
1st (b) try Vic Square, it was close to an event where i picked it up. Took note of the co-ords and distance.
2nd try Hindmarsh square as I was waiting for the bus, made notes and off home I went. Got home did some calcs and decided that only 1 spot was likely, the other in the middle of the North Adelaide golf links.
by bike
3rd try - Close no cigar
4th try - further away the before. Home again and did more calcs to narrow down GZ. Pretty much had it to ~2m.
by bus
5th try get to the co-ords I worked out, and we have an open cage.
Signed the log left a few PTs, and got the cache back to LL at the next event we were both at.
TFTC LL, it was a fun one to do.
I had wrongly interpreted some cryptic comments from LL as a hint regarding the final location, so we went back to the parklands this morning and took our first reading... which was considerably further away than I had hoped. Then the display went blank before my dawdling pen noted the distance . Still we felt we had enough significant digits.
Then it was off to the other end of the parklands for a second reading... hmmmm, further away. Still with two readings we now had two possible coordinates, and one looked likely.
Finally we drove to our suspected secret location and the button was pressed and a congratulatory note scrolled across the screen! Success, and shortly thereafter both signatures were in the log book.
Thanks LL for a unique cache experience!
Canary & I picked up the cache on Sunday morning, pressed the button for the first time (8km away!) then considered our options. Canary had a plan ready for how we would do this. We chose our direction, went for a drive, pressed again & found we’d managed to get even further away from the location!
Canary considered our options & gave me a choice. I chose one, he then outlined why he thought the other was better, so we went with his choice. Wisely as it turned out, as on our 3rd press of the button, we got the magic message of congratulations.
Thanks Laighside Legends, this was a great cache – an innovative idea to start with, and a very well executed one. And thanks Canary, for the company & the brains for figuring out what to do.
Highly recommended, if anyone gets an opportunity to play with this cache, take it!
PS: because we only heard about this one while it Murray Bridge & didn’t have an opportunity to read the cache notes, I hadn’t realised that the location was reset each time. Only realised that when chatting to Tronador about it afterwards, when it became obvious that we hadn’t ended up at the same spot. So I’m not giving anything away to future searchers if I add that we really liked the location we ended up at, the views over the river were wonderful.
What a great idea. I always love something different. We got lucky and found this on the third attempt.
Well done, Laighside Legends. Thanks for the delivery and collection service, too.
TFTC.
I did actually get myself to the right location which was a very busy round about near my home, I got the congratulation message and then when I tried to open the cache it would not budge. I tried it a number of times till I finally got a message saying no more attempts. Booo!!!!
I think it was user error though because while I tried to pull it open, I think I was meant to push it open or something like that. So here I am a little embarrassed to be the first person to log a DNF on this very cleverly constructed little cache.
Maybe if you will let me, ill have another attempt at this in the future.
Cheers for letting me have a go.
Taking some coords, then driving again and then taking some more cords, between us we used all sorts of technology to work out where GZ might be.
Dr Owl couldn't be with me tonight when I tried the final press of the button, so she wasn't there to help me open the cache when that lovely Congratulations word came into view....which was an issue as the darned cache wouldn't open
So we found the right location but couldn't sign the log book.
Thankfully LL allowed me to sign it at another event quite some time later (7/4/14), so now I can log the find and hopefully he will also allow Dr Owl the same opportunity in the future.
Thanks LL for an impressive piece of work.
On another note, the following names are in the log book but not logged online: Freddo, Honeysucker, Gum Ako, Eco Ako and ma7:7hew. These cachers may claim a smiley if they wish...
Dazzatron & Margieh have there names in there twice for some reason too...
Finally! This was a lot of fun. A few separate trips getting some triangulations happening, and we came up with a pretty sure GZ, went there, and got our congratulations message... and then couldn't get the container open. It took FOUR visits for us to finally do something right and it opened so easily on the fourth visit that we started to wonder what we were doing wrong the previous three times!
Swapped a pathtag for a pathtag, the cache is definitely chockers, maybe this is making the opening mechanism a bit tricky?
Anyways, we finally had success with an excellently engineered cache. Will get it back to the owner asap for the next players.
We pulled over in a random spot on the side of the road and pushed the button. Whaddaya know, 153m away! We saw a worthy landmark about this distance from us and decided this had to be it! Nope, now we were 269m away. Ma77hew did some funky calculations and we knew where to go.
Once at GZ, we had a bit of trouble tracking satellites, but on the third push we got the 'congratulations' message...then nothing happened. At the time we weren't aware that this didn't count as an attempt (should have read the listing) so we left GZ and decided we'd come back once we'd spoken to LL about it.
So...armed with a better understanding of how it worked, we're back today to claim our find. It took 4 pushes, but finally it locked on 4 satellites and with a jiggle of the lid we had it open! Signed the log, swapped some swaps, and away we go.
Well done on a fantastic cache. We loved it, great concept. TFTC
Within 20m of GZ there was a man who seemed to be living there, and who was watching us. We decided it didn't matter, so put the cache down, pressed the button, and waited. "Congratulations", but it didn't open. Tried again, and the same thing.
A call to LL reassured us, and told us to tap on the lid. Unfortunately, this time it said we were 65m out ! Tried 20m South then 20m North, then East. Still no luck. Finally, Medusa took the cache another 15m East and it opened - over 40m from our first "Congratulations".
Thanks LL for an interesting experience, and a well constructed device. I suppose you coded it in C or Basic, but I think next time you should use assembler, on a platform with a RISC processor based on a cleaned up version of the MIPS instruction set.
Cache will be at YP cachers event tomorrow.
Of course I stuffed things up badly and rested my work folder on top of the cache thus activating the readings and rendering it useless.
So take 2 was today and after taking two readings I had the choice of the centre of Victoria Square (what are the odds?) and another location. I opted for 'the other location' but despite accurate calculations and readings found myself still 90m away. Determined to not have to go back for a re-set the third time I decided to take a final punt and use up my last guess in a nearby location that looked likely as well. And luckily got the congratulations message!
Thanks LL for a great cache and a great bit of engineering!
On our second attempt, we must have accidentally pressed the button, because after taking a photo of the view, it was on and had already found enough satellites ! Needless to say, it was a mad scramble for the pen and paper to take note of the numbers .
Put them together at home and were shown a nice little place we hadn't been to for some years .
Took chip. Left silver medallion. SL.
Loved the concept and the chance to play.
Thanks Laighside Legends .
So off I went today to work out my hidden location. So the first time I press the button it said I had 2235m to go. Headed over to a great little spot that was in range and press it again. Wow the box opened and I still had two turns left. You think like me LL. And Fergusson Sq is one of my park and rest spots at lunch time.
Thanks so much for the fun
Sneaky squeaky
My strategy was to take a reading from a distance, 11.3km in my case, except I was not prepared and I did not record the coordinates quick enough, so I wasted an attempt repeating the processes and collecting the information. A third reading in town (I was prepared this time), had me 1.4km away.
Using some web magic, I then had two possible locations, one was a little better than the other - so off for a walk at lunchtime. Unfortunately I could not get to my GZ, and it did not look right, so I braved the button and got told I was 170m away (I must be out of tries by now!). Standing in the middle of a park, I re-did the calculations and got a much better GZ.
Last time lucky! "Congratulations" - log signed!
Great work Laighside Legends, I am impressed with the work you have put into this and how well it works (not much to say about the operator!). I highly recommend for everyone to give it a go!
Managed it with 2 pushes of the button. TFTC.
Did have a few problems getting sat lock, but got there in the end
TNLN
thanks for the fun
There are some Adelaide cachers who don't even look at the locationless list and those from interstate who do are probably sick of having this Adelaide cache in the list...
It is currently available if anyone whats to go next...
Our first measurement was taken in Adelaide - 26.3 kms away. Hmm, ok closer to home then. The second measurement at home timed out but after we stopped all the kids crowding around it the box was able to get a decent peek at the satellites and told us we were 3015m away.
The great circles were drawn and showed two paddocks, one of which was more likely than the other. A quick trip down to the Amy Gillett Bike Track showed we were 180m away. We tried another spot before calling LL to confirm that we could still press the button even though we'd run out of attempts and that 60m was all we needed to get the box open.
Back at the car we placed the baby and the box on the boot while we marshalled the rest of the family. The baby promptly pressed the button on the box which responded with "Congratulations!" We'd parked the car at GZ without even knowing it!
Many thanks to Laighside Legends for a fun cache.
Trigg-a-Nomics is about to have a go at it in the next week or two...
The most unique cache I have done in some time.
Thanks Ben for the Opportunity to give it a go.
Thanks Ben for all the hard work you have put into this to get it working and allowing us to give it a go... Was really intriguing...
This is a great idea - good on you LL for getting it working! If you want a real challenge, we're going to the Daintree for Easter so I could try it out interstate!
After a bit more tweaking by LL, I had a second try at the Pub Dinner, which went much better. In fact, it resulted in an open cache! Nice work Laighside Legends
