Description

Lighthouses of VIC - Port Melbourne Rear Light

The Port Melbourne Lighthouses were built in 1924, and in conjunction guided ships by marking the centre of the Port Melbourne Channel from Port Phillip Bay.

The Port Melbourne Rear Light is a 26 metre concrete tower, 500 metres north of the Front Light. Its main light is red, occulting every six seconds, and three metres below it is a 24 hour a day directional light, with green, white and red sectors, each showing over only a fraction of a degree, to mark the precise centre of the channel, in a particularly narrow arc of 1.5º. Originally surrounded by the large BP fuel distribution installation which was cleared in the early 1990s, the light is now the focal point of the Beacon Cove Project, a bayside housing development.

Height: 26 metres
Elevation: 24 metres
Pattern: White Flashing every 6 seconds
Range: 14 nautical miles / 26 km

Not on the Spirit on this occasion as I flew over but a quick trip on 109 brought me here to log this cache. Very Happy

Grabbed this virtual while working on a nightcache in the area

#GA3886 - 13:00; Arrived in Melbourne last night with the geohoney and today as we headed towards the city after a visit to the South Melbourne Markets, did a bit of a GCA caching run through the Port Melbourne area on our way into the city. Found ourselves in a nice quiet area as I grabbed this cache after grabbing a snap of its little brother out in the water. TFTC Team MavEtJu Very HappyClan Cerberus

Over for my yearly visit to Maffra for work. I had some time up my sleeve today before I headed back to Melbourne to get back on the big red bathtub destined for home. Easy find with photo attached.

Arrived early enough to locate this one before going to board the Spirit of Tasmania.
Thanks for bringing us to see this lighthouse Team MavEtJu

A late start to today's caching adventures, as I had to go to the other end of the train line to reunite short-stuff with her mother before heading to the city. The cluster of GA points of interest at the end of the Port Melbourne line piqued my interest.

I cant't pass a lighthouse without a visit, and this is the first of two down here at the old port.

Did not see this one on the way out but it was easy to spot on the way back from our cruise. In actual fact I have both in the picture with my finger. I got to see the lighthouses in action. Great holiday and now back to work and also finding a few GA caches for the summer game of States of the Nation.

Not sure how I missed this when it was published as it's just around the corner from work. I finally got it to find this surprisingly suburban lighthouse.
Thanks Team MavEtJu for the cache

In the early '80s, I lived nearby in Port Melbourne. My, how this area has changed since then.
+Wife & I first met about one kilometre from here.
Today we are back in town after attending an event at the Port Melbourne cricket ground.
Working our way back home using GA caches as our guide.
These structures were certainly built to last.
Thank you for the informative cache, now for the Front Light.

Given the number of trips we have had on the Bass Strait ferries, we were really surprised that we had not seen either the Front or the Rear lighthouses. This cache gave us the opportunity to visit and learn a little about how these two lighthouses worked together to guide ships up the channel to dock in Melbourne. The photo added to the Gallery shows Mrs y'stassie at the base of the Rear Lighthouse. Thanks Team MavEtJu for the cache.

I was filling in time and having fun finding caches, as we waited for the Spirit of Tasmania to take us to Tasmania tonight. My first lighthouse cache. TFTC Team MavEtJu.

A quick find with Lady caughtatwork this afternoon. I have been to this and the other lighthouse nearby for a mujltio cache (when I did such things). Nice to revisit the area. Photo to follow.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks for this geocache listing. Nice to get to some locations not quite as well visited as the plastic box variety.
