4.23. Unarchiving a Geocache

The archiving of a geocache is intended to be a permanent status. That is why only community volunteer reviewers and Geocaching HQ staff have the capability to unarchive it. This is done only in rare circumstances and only if it meets the current Geocache Listing Guidelines.

If a geocache is archived by a reviewer or staff for lack of maintenance it will not be unarchived.

This one hasn’t been available for over a year. Perhaps some action needs to take place.

Please don't let this one be archived, ive thoroughly enjoyed this series and sitting on the final coords waiting for the cache to return

This one has been disabled (and for good reason) for over 6 months.

Will it be making a return any time in the near future?

A few days ago I decided that this series was occupying too many unfound spots too close to our home. That plus having heard *Cache_or_Check* talking about how he enjoyed doing it earlier this year was enough to get me started.

I looked at the first four and collated all the questions and with the map in hand began a journey to find the required data. The checksums were helpful as a couple of answers could perhaps have been interpreted more than one way. Having collected the information for all 4, yesterday I went out and found numbers 1,2 and 4. Number 3 is currently unavailable. A previous finder however kindly offered me the data from that cache which I was going to need to use to solve the puzzle for this one. I struggled with the hint but was lucky enough that another Adelaide puzzle which I had found not too long ago used the same method. 4 x 3 x 2 = 26 but it was clear that many of these were of no use. And eventually a likely spot was decided on.

This spot seemed to fit the previous logs very well.

Yesterday I went past GZ and had a quick search. I had read some of the logs including the CO's one from 8 Mar this year. But I did not have it with me at GZ. I did remember the comment about the "engraved note" and when I found this I was confident I was in the right spot. The object with the engraved note has a handle and looked like it could be a geocache container or a container attached to a lot of scary electrical wires! Grabbing the handle it was fairly easy to start to lift out of its hole. But I stopped and wondered if this was the "handiwork of the CO" or something that might kill me?

I abandoned my search and returned to the car. A bit later a discussion with the first finder and then another with another Adelaide geocacher who works in the area of public nasty "it can kill you" electric things" made it very clear that lifting the "cache" further would have been a very unwise and dangerous thing to do.

The second cacher gave me a suggestion as to where I should actually look.
I returned to the GZ today with our Geopooch Dogsaster to help me. I did locate the cache and signed the damp log.

I have sent a note to the CO about the item with the handle and the risks of it being so close to the current GZ. Suffice to say
- it should NOT be easily accessible (but currently it is).
- it should be weather and water proof (but it currently isn't). Water and electricity is a scary mix.
- it is nothing to do with the cache. It is not the cache, nor is it attached to, nor part of the cache.
- it should not be touched.
- it is too close to the current hide.

Hopefully a safe solution can be found to this issue, as this is a great series and the 5th one is an integral part of it.

**Didn't find it...** Sad

Either my caching eyes weren't working or this one need checking...

Thanks anyway Trigg-A-Nomics...

03-Jul-16
Came here with previous finders. No sign of where the cache is supposed to be. Perhaps this one needs a check by the CO as there has been many works done here (and part of the area is still fenced off).

03-Jul-16
Checked again and the cache is safe and well although a little grubby.

Finally after completing Engineering 1 to 4 some time ago we had another look for this one, remember checking here last time but not thouroughly enough (a girls look), found with Mattycat by torchlight while having a couple of hours free time, a great series most of which we discovered so many facts and bits of history of our city, most of which we found was easily done while riding our bikes. After 5 months and about 15 little detours here and there to gather all clues and collect the Multi caches, this great series is now completed. Under cover of darkness the under cover cache was finally found tonight.
Thank you Trigg-A-Nomics for taking us on a journey through the city and North Adelaide and teaching us about the rich history Adelaide possesses.

Veni. Vidi. Vici. Scripsi.
Well this was a great series. Completed 1-4 earlier in the year by doing a lot of lunchtime wandering, and enjoyed learning a lot about how this great city of ours was built and functions.
Gathered the clues for the final and put them together. Assembled the combinations and had no idea what to do. Had heard whispers what this was about and tried Googling it and also looked at the hint and tried Googling this as well but nothing was looking like a solution. Was discussing issues with one of the EAC series with the CO and mentioned about this and CO suggested I look at previous logs and continue with the direction I was taking. So earlier this week I spent a couple of nights on Google with lots of reading and learning. Finally something appeared and a method of solution presented which also helped solve another puzzle using the same method. Used the method to work through the options and the obvious one soon appeared and plotting it looked good. Now it went into the TBF list.
Today came into town for the Crows Freo match (well done Crows) and passed close by, so made the detour and stop to make the find for the cache for the day. Loved that the hide has its own cloak of invisibility and was spotted from several metres away. Quickly found a very well hidden cache. Extracted a very fragile log and signed it and carefully replaced it back in the cache. Replaced the cache in its hide.
Favourite point applied and am going to apply to the rest of the series if not already done.

Found It!

5 years and 2 months ago I started this series. I also started an engineering degree at that same time. I finished the engineering degree just over a year ago. Today I finally finished this series!!!

I found the last of the multis 3 years ago. Been a regular reader of Randall Munroe's work I knew exactly what the hint referred to (in fact I'd often thought of holding a caching event based on the same concept) but I was left a bit confused as to how Mr Trigg-A-Nomics had reversed a certain part of the algorithm that was supposedly un-reversible. I pushed on though, thinking perhaps he just got lucky (I mean, Bitcoin mining is a thing that exists after all). But all that got me nowhere - although it did give me a few ideas for another puzzle that I might hide one day... Then a few months ago I was talking to someone about this puzzle that had no idea what the hint meant. After explaining it to them they found the link to 'that other thing' that turned out to be correct!

Then Freddo's 600th cache happened - and despite all this knowledge I still missed FTF on that.

Today I got to GZ and after a bit of poking around I found the surprisingly well hidden cache! The 'don't-walk-into' marker is a nice touch - you just can't miss a cache when it's marked like that!

Thanks for the cache, thanks for the series, thanks for the history and thanks for the journey! I dare say the best cache series in South Australia!!!

So It turns out the cache was there all along. Perhaps I need some glasses.

A great series with some very interesting locations around Adelaide.

Signed the log. Thanks for the cache Trigg-A-Nomics.

Checked on this one again and I'm happy to say the cache is still there and safe and well. There is plenty of grass obscuring the cache so make sure you hunt around the rim at ground level.

The history of this cache just keeps getting better. This spot must exist in some engineer's database or checklist because once you lift the lid you are greeted with a engraved note which states *"This Stobie Pole supplies power to the lights and traffic signals at [nearby] intersection."* Which is nice, because that means the Stobie Pole Removal Team who helpfully left the original six foot cache freestanding and in place back in 2010 must've actually been a **Virtual Stobie Pole Installation Team!** Bravo to them!

And the council, ever endeavouring to keep the non-engineering public safe from engineers, have helpfully installed a marker over the cache to stop anyone from accidentally walking into the Virtual Stobie Pole.

Enjoy!

Came past a previously calculated gz with Purrfect Di and Sebastbat.
Not much luck here today. Could see things had changed around a bit, but nothing we stared at or poked would reveal the prize.
Several possibilities - we could be all suffering cache blindness, even allowing for clever and sneaky engineering hides.
- we might have been looking for something not there, because things do go missing,
or - mattycat's engineering skills aren't too bad for a nurse, (something like "dammit Jim, I'm a doctor not a rocket scientist"... and we're just sliding down the wrong pole or barking up the wrong tree or whatever engineers do when they get things wrong!
Can we check it's still there please? We'll try to re-do it and put on the watch list so we know if there's a find or fix. Thanks [:o)]

After several years, the engineering journey has some to a end - or so I thought.

I searched and searched at GZ. I phoned a previous finder to confirm I was in the right location. He was familiar with the version 2 hiding place.

I'm afraid it might be gone. Sad Or I need to engineer better glasses.

Nice to complete another series, as it's been a while since I've completed one, although there probably aren't that many around, and I even coincided the date with Cal's birthday.
A great little series that has taken several years to complete and managed to include a ruined bag and pants when a water bottled leaked and the red dye in the booklet went everywhereRed Face along the way. Many interesting little spots visited too
With the size of the cache sorted I headed back to a spot I'd looked at previously and soon found the cache tucked away. The log was damp, but with some sunshine today I did try drying it for a few minutes before adding my name and returning it to it's home.
Also stood for a while and looked at the engineering masterpiece taking place nearby, before looking at an engineering change that has resulted in a carbon copy of Narnia with a lamp-post in a forest of trees, before thinking I had better head back to work (although no longer as an engineer).

Needed a few clues from Trigg-A-Nomics but got there in the end. A great series and very worthy of a favourite point =)

Engineered a sneaky visit to the temporary cache and decided that if a temporary engineering solution has been in place for eighteen months then it is permanent! Updated the hint and the size to suit. I reserve the right to improve the final but I doubt I will ever be able to reach the level of stobie-pole-less glory of the original.

"To the optimist, the glass is half full. To the pessimist, the glass is half empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be."

After finally getting coordinates out of all the bits of information I headed off to GZ (having only a quick look at Google) to discover I hadn't loaded the coordinates into the GPSr.
Poked around a few places (not sure I should be poking around one of them) before expanding my search area as I couldn't remember exactly where GZ was on the map.
Anyway, after awhile decided I need to continue onwards on my lunch time walk and headed back.
I'll be back!

Out with 3LG for a Sunday night cache run on a blustery and wet afternoon/evening which produced 19 locus cache smileys Smile and 3 DNFs Sad
Ok so we found GZ within seconds of arriving but we didn't know it.
We spent an hour here searching, PAF and searched some more.....only to end up where we had started from Surprised
Seems the place we discarded was actually the hide and Mr3LG bravely ascertained this by sticking his hand into dark unknown places!
Talk about seeing parts of the city I haven;t seen before Wink

Found while caching with Locus cache on the eve of her clicking over to half a century, she had clicked over before the caching night finished with her famous "just one more" lol, it was a good night caching with the skies opening up a few times but that wasn't going to stop us keen cachers in the pursuit of the next cache to calm the caching beast with in Cool

This one had us going in circles past it quite a few times ruling it out many times until i thought i would give it a closer inspection and ignore any creepy crawlies to be rewarded with the cache : )

9 months since last finder, and it has taken me longer than that to get to the 5gz's.
Loved the series, certainly took me to places I didnt know about Adelaide before...
Needed to paf the gz here, twice! Found the little sucker eventually!
Busy spot this after work in the dark! lol

Found the four parts to this series over a few weeks many moons ago, and collected all the clues. Could not figure what to do with them as nothing ended up making any sense. It took a while to stumble upon the right solution after carefully analysing the cache description and a few selected logs. Teed up an assault on the cache with honeysucker at lunch time to claim the cache and notch up my 4,000th cache find. A very nice puzzle to celebrate the milestone. Thanks Trigg-A-Nomics!

I was in the area today and I noticed something was missing. So I stopped and inspected further. Everything is gone. All that is left is a hole in the ground.

04-May-11
I travel over here frequently. Come to think of it few people spend so many nights in the inner CBD as I do so this series of multi caches was made for me. I slowly gathered the preliminary caches over the past 6 months and only the unavailablilty of #3 stopped me in my tracks.
In the course of my journeys through the eyes of the engineering series I went over old ground and found new and exciting places to visit that I would otherwise have known nothing about.
I sought the information that I would have gathered at #3 so that I could work on the final prior to this latest visit.
My plane landed at 4.30pm. At 5.30pm I was standing at GZ having enjoyed the walk from my hotel. I have driven past here at least 27 times and subconsciously I believe that I may have noticed this cache out of the corner of my eye before, especially when it was in its former incarnation. Loved reading about the council's involvement in GZ too.
Great cache series all round.
Thanks trigg-a-nomics

My friend helped me out on this one. Found it nice and easy. Took TB and two pathtags. Good hide.
Thanks Trigg-A-Nomics MEng for the cache. Smile

16-Mar-11
A helpful call from a council worker led me into the Southern Parklands at night to retrieve the shattered remains of the cache. My wife has often warned me against such activities but I returned alive and even visited GZ to find the logbook lying on the ground.

Luckily the vandals had left enough behind to allow me to construct a mini-me version of the cache. It is now proudly occupying GZ once again!

Just received a call from Adelaide City Council that EAC #5 was kicked to pieces over the weekend. [B)]

Monitored for my safety indeed. I didn't solve it myself but was given a nudge by Liz and Bruce. Love the final location, a very obvious object blending into the background.

09-Jan-11
Well what can I say but wow! I loved the whole series and the final today was the icing on the cake.
I struggled for a bit with the clues and spent a lot of time going down a parallel (but completely wrong) path.
I eventually took a step back and finally came across the correct (and much easier btw...) algorithm.
Stopped off on my way to work this afternoon and found the beautiully constructed cache container...a real engineering marvel and a fitting finale to the series.
Many thanks Trigg-A-Nomics...great work!

24-Nov-10
I had the clues, but what to do with them? The hints pointed me at an activity that I'd looked at before, but how did that algorithm apply? Had Trigg-A-Nomics worked out how to reverse that part of the algorithm? I hadn't heard that he'd received a Field's medal, so I assumed not. But luck was with me, and a bit more research using a slightly shorter name revealed a totally different algorithm. But this one looked much more promising, and as promised, out popped some coordinates! I must remember that website, I'm sure that idea has potential.

Time for a visit to GZ, to admire the engineering marvel hinted at in previous logs, and the reality didn't disppoint! Looks a little out of place without it's support, and yet somehow also looks like it belongs there!

Took nothing, left TB
Thanks Trigg-A-Nomics!

18-Nov-10
Finally got around to visiting this magnificent example of engineering mastery, after our initial visit was thwarted by a stolen log book. The structure looks all the more impressive now that the associated structures have been removed. More official-like, even. I'm still amazed it wasn't demolished in the process.
A quick sign of the logbook while no one was paying attention and we are now able to finally say we have officially completed the series. This will definitely go on our top 20 favourite finds of 2010 bookmark list, as the whole series was well thought out, interesting, challenging, educational, and straight out fun.

14-Nov-10
Well what a rewarding and fascinating journey this series has been.
Many previously unknown facets of the history of our lovely city were revealed to me.
Have to admit that without help from Freddo via Allchin, I would never have found the intriguing final location.
Learned that making a hash of things can sometimes be helpful.
Thanks Trigg-A-Nomics for a great experience. Makes Geocaching worthwhile.

27-Oct-10
Added an extra star of difficulty based on feedback from fellow cachers. It may take you six or so hours wandering around the city to gather all the clues!

14-Oct-10
What can we say except that we wholeheartedly endorse the comments of the caching heavyweights!
The whole series was well thought out, clear and accurate at every location.
We thank Freddo for an hint on making sense of solving the clues and Mrs Wibble (at the 10.10.10 event) for confirming that we had the correct location.
On our way home from the airport this morning we detoured and were actually lucky enough to get our name third in the log, although we believe others probably deserved third place on the podium.
This one deserves a place in the Caching Hall of Fame.
Thanks Trigg-A-Nomics for the final cache and the educational tour of Adelaide.

13-Oct-10
Well. What can one say? That is one of the most bizarre experiences I have ever had geocaching.

A little frog whispered to me that the structure the final cache was attached to had been reverse engineered out of existence so I headed down to collect the sorry remains.

What I discovered was something quite remarkable! The team who removed the supporting structure had been either:
a) so impressed with my handiwork,
b) so frightened of my warning signs,
c) actually secret geocachers in disguise, or
d) all of the above
that they have secured the cache in place, free standing as it were.

I surveyed their handiwork for a while and decided to give them an engineering excellence award on the spot! The cache seems secure and as long as no one official goes "hang on, what's that doing there?" then it should remain untouched for many years to come!

Tonight a helpful couple of cachers replaced the logbook (I'm hoping they signed it first!) so it's now back in action! Have at it!

Unbelievable.

13-Oct-10

Amazing tour of Adelaide and what's more an amazing feat of engineering for a what happens to be my 500th puzzle find. Simply awe inspiring - this will go in the caching archives for me. I'm pretty sure that the camo was so good, that (so I am told by 2 geocachers after I reported my suspicions and the owner), that the council removed a stobie pole and put the "cache" structure back. Of course, this could have been here for years, so they couldn't move it. Could they[?] Nup. Replant the structure. Well you'd expect that from stobie-pole-removalists.

There are so many little things around our beautiful city that you take for granted, please get out there players and walk the walk. You won't be disappointed.

Clear skies and our thanx once again to Mr Trigg Smile[^] I am just sorry I can't post pictures of this one! [:0]

09-Oct-10
Oh NO Sad. Figured out the final location last night - being very familiar with the letters in the clue already, but overthought things and needed a push from Freddo to realise we didn't have to actually decide the algorithm ourselves! Went to the most likely location and spotted the excellently engineered container immediately. We saw a few signs of tampering- and the container is empty Sad. So we can't log a find. Sorry to report what's happened to a clever hide.

06-Oct-10
Very clever puzzle. I ignored the clues and hints for so long. In the end I chased a lead that I should have followed much sooner. It is nice to learn that there people with GPSrs who do weirder things than geocachers.

A nearly bald Freddo finally got a sensible answer from a really neat website late last night. In the end it was too dark for even me to go out. Another two locations to check first thing in the morning. I started at the wrong one and finished at the right one.

Awesome cache. Well done. Virgin log book so I have another gold ticket for my collection. And of course the prize I was after the whole time. I still do not have the knack, although it is likely that I have had a lot of fun.
