Possibly because it takes a bit of effort to get it out of a high cupboard, the only time we put up a Christmas tree is when there's kids coming for Christmas. And never being huge fans of tree decorating, we hit on a system to get it done. Put a whole heap of chocolates all over the tree and a box of decorations under it. For every chocolate taken that person put a decoration on to replace it. In no time at all we had a decorated tree! Nothing exotic or expensive for decorations, just cheap coloured balls, stars etc....some even found as swaps in caches.
