Gallery of log for Oxley on Mersey
The second part of Tasowls and CEyres waterfall discovery trip. So far our party of 4 adults and seven mini cachers have walked for four hours because I inadvertently used the West Rowallan track rather than the strongly recommended Mersey Forest Road. The West Rowallan track becomes too rough for conventional vehicles.....
Walking along the Lees Paddocks track from the Lewis Falls we found a genuine mountain spring to refill our water bottles and then treked further into the forest till we found another small clearing and the GPSr was indicating that we had overshot the Oxley falls. We didn't see any cairns or pink tape, so following the GPSr arrow we traced our way through the clearing and eventually sighted a small scrap of pink tape high in a tree limb. (Is it possible that someone has removed all cairns and tape?) Following another indistinct pad into the forest we soon stumbled onto the wonderously huge rock slab above the Oxley Falls where the Mersey River flowed at knee depth. Whooping with joy the kids quickly changed into togs and paddled in the water while the adults removed boots and let the water soothe tired feet. Idyllic, truly idyllic. A glance at the time showed the day was ending and we found (once again) that dressing reluctant teary kids takes far longer....We marched back to the cars at a fairly brisk pace and rested our weary limbs at 7:30 some 8 and half hours after we set off.
The cache is set in a spectacular place with two nearby falls, the bigger lower falls and upstream of the rock slab a smaller set of falls. We found the cache using the clue as the co-ordinates were well out, my old GPSr had the cache at S41 50.496 E146 09.934. We signed the log before walking back to the cars.
This is a great place to discover on warm summer afternoons so thanks Geoskid for yet another outstanding cache. Well done.
