Charters Towers Police Station - 1910
In the gold rush days, Charters Towers was the second largest centre in Queensland, hosting over 60 hotels and a Stock Exchange. It was a bustling mining town with interests also in sheep and cattle. History abounds in this town with a great deal of the architecture still standing as a proud reminder of the past, including the stately police station, built in 1910 (although a police station had been on that same site since the 1880's). Damaged by fire in 1988, the locals petitioned the National Trust for assistance in saving the station, and the state government provided funds for the repairs which took until 1990 to complete it to its former glory.
