Description
Hello Hello what have we got hear then, why its an old police station.
There is a police station in almost every town or community. Some of these are extremley old and still in use and others have long since faded from use and remain only as a historic reminder.
Your challenge is to find a police station:
- A station that no longer exists;
- That is no longer in use as an operational station;
- Alternatively a station that is over 50 years old and still operating.
Include a photo and a little bit of history of the station/building or the community in which it stands.
You will also get extra points if you include someone in the photo holding a bag with the word "SWAG" on it.
The old Darwin Police station and Headquarters Building, taken in 1977. This building ceased operation as a police station in the late 1980's and subsequently demolished in the 1990's. The building had been constructed in the 1960's survived Cyclone Tracy and functioned as the primary command centre for the disaster operations after the cyclone.

Arltunga Police Station, Hart, Northern Territory
Trekkers visted here in 2017.
Located 110km east of Alice Springs in the East MacDonnell Ranges, the historic town of Arltunga was officially Central Australia’s first town and once supported up to 3,000 people.
Arltunga was born out of a gold rush in 1887, when alluvial gold was discovered in a dry creek bed. Fortune seekers had to travel 600km from the Oodnadatta railhead, often on foot, to seek their fortune in a harsh environment. At the time, Alice Springs consisted of just the Overland Telegraph Station, and was little more than an outpost that had expanded as it became the supply base of Arltunga. Mining activity continued in the area for 30 years.
Today you can relive the heyday of Arltunga at the Historical Reserve, where the remains of mines, old miner’s camps and stone buildings (some of which have been restored), are preserved for the public to explore.

I photographed this old police station yesterday whilst stopped for coffee at the coffee shop/cafe opposite.
13a Cambridge Rd: Built as a police station by local builder Peter Denholm in 1930.
The word police still appears above the ground floor windows. I wonder how many people have knocked on the door looking for the boys in blue?

GLENROWAN
VICTORIA
I found this Old Glenrowan Police Station in Siege Street Glenrowan. It operated as the Police Station from 1888 through to 1999. It has been restored, and is now a minor museum. Nearby is the Lock-up that was relocated from Greta in the Hunter Valley, about a couple of years after Ned Kelly's capture. However, it actually held Ned at an earlier time, when he was only 16 years.

VICTORIA VALLEY TASMANIA
Police in Victoria Valley were originally guards escorting between 1844 - 1845 as a part of the Victoria Valley Probation Station. After the probation station was abandoned police remained on the site. Improvements such as a fence built in 1866 suggested that police continued keep a presence in Victoria Valley.
In 1874 a fire destroyed the site. Tenders were called for a permanent building and the police station was rebuilt for 75 pounds by Mt Nehemiah Rogers using bricks from the old probation station. In 1880 stables were added and two extra rooms added 4 years later.
A new weatherboard police station was built in 1911 and the old brick structure was dismantled and the bricks sold to local farmers. Two rooms were used as a school house from 1921 - 1924.
After nearly 100 years the police post was abandoned in Victoria Valley when the constabulary was transferred to Tarraleah, a new Hydro Electric settlement. This old derelict police station can still be seen on Victoria Road.

I was walking from Southern Cross Station to my accommodation and walking past this building I saw the information panel which indicated that this was originally the Bourke Street West Police Station. The Gothic Revival building was designed by S. E. Brindley and S. C. Brittingham of the Public Works Department. The complex was built in 1887 and 1888/9 and contained 11 cells, a waiting room, police station, barracks and residence. The Police Station closed in 1970. The complex is now the Royal Melbourne Hotel.

The Nagambie Police Station is still in the same spot (although more modernised), as it was when I got my drivers licence there 56 years ago, and my mother who is now 101, said it has always been there, to her memory. In fact, when she and dad were married, they used to live next door to the police station.
Thanks for the Locationless Beagle Team, it brought back fond memories when I called by to take this photo today, after visiting my mum who is now the oldest resident of this lovely town of my birth.

Hello Beagle Team thanks for the cache.
Some time ago I managed to get hold of a very old street atlas of Hobart and on it was shown the police stations.
Today I went for a walk to see if I could find one of them. One of the ones nearby has been pulled down and rebuilt as a shop so I wandered a little farther afield into town to find this one.
It wasn’t too long after I first got my driver’s licence that I was sent to find a house just up the road at number 1 Murray Street to replace a gate post. I drove up and down this street passing this police station many time before I eventually found it. Of course the post that was missing had the house number on it.
I don’t know when this station was closed down but it was here in the early 60’s.

Doesn't look like much, but this was once the local police station in Beauty Point in northern Tasmania. Back in the day when there were one man stations in all the small country towns - before closures and amalgamations. Since been sold off and now a private residence. Original office to the left, vehicle garage to the right... thanks..!!

This building used to be the Lindisfarne police station.
My wife lived just around the corner and remembers seeing the police sign out the front aprox. 40 years ago.
Like a lot of the community police stations they were sold and now are houses.

This is the former, former Echuca Police Station. The new station was built just 30m along the road from here. The new, new station opened at the end of 2016 and is a few hundred meters across town.
The original station (pictured) opened in 1867 and remained in use until 1969. In 1970 it opened as the Echuca Historical Society Museum.
The second station opened in 1967 with up to fifty uniformed officers and detectives working from it with an acquired former house next door housing the Traffic Management Unit along with the Inspector and his staff.
Infested with white ants, cramped and terribly out of date the force had been seeking a suitable location and funding for quite some. The building was finally vacated in mid December last year as the new station opened (see http://geocaching.com.au/gallery/images/ga6868/21714809779.jpg).
In the attached photo there's three caching related things that I've been able to log.... This cache, GA0651 and also a GC cache I helped hide here for another cacher.

This is Murrumbeena police station, well at least it was. It is now unmanned and classed as permanently closed. The building has been sitting idle since 2013, and the Murrumbeena area police coverage is undertaken by the Caulfield police service.
I got a friendly PSO from across the road at the Murrumbeena Station / Skyrail works site to take my picture.
As this hasn't been logged for over a year, it will serve as a claim for my Summer Scavenger Series.

WHARF POLICE STATION, Hobart.
This building, referred to as the "Navy Building" was constructed in approximately 1920 and is located at Franklin Wharf, on the corner of Morrison and Brooke Streets, opposite Watermans Dock. The building had a single cell.
Those assigned to patrol duties on the wharf area would commence their shift with a muster at Liverpool Street headquarters, before proceeding to the Wharf Station to begin their beat patrols. In its latter years the building was used for police accommodation.
The Annual Report of the Department for 1956 stated that:
“The number of police officers assigned to anti-pillage control both at Hobart and Launceston has been increased.
Following upon the receipt of the Lodge Report, a Criminal Investigation Branch sergeant is to be stationed and will reside at the Wharf Police Station in Hobart.
He will supervise Criminal Investigation Branch personnel assigned to duties designed to provide a more adequate cover for anti-pillage control and arrangements are in progress to assign more uniform police to patrol the Hobart wharf area.”

Moruya Police Station.
The Moruya Courthouse and Police Precinct were designed by James Barnett & built by W. Duncan between 1879 - 1880. With the expansion of the gold diggings in 1879 the Secretary General's Department recognised the need for extra security measures for the safety of gold consignments throughout the district. The Police station remains in use to this day.

Old Heavitree Gap Police Station - south Alice Springs
The first police station in Central Australia was a thatched mud-hut at the old Telegraph Station, built around 1872. It is believed that the first police officer was Mounted Constable Edward William Priest. Later, Constables John Charles Shirley, William Henry Willshire and Erwein Wurmbrand were based there.
In the mid 1880's, the Heavitree Gap Police Station was built and on April 21st 1886, Constables Willshire and Wurmbrand shifted all police property from the Telegraph Station to the new Police station. They began operating from there the next day assisted by N/C's Peter Willie Wilkie Collins and 'Fred', (both presumably aboriginal).

The Police Station at Greenough, Western Australia, is no longer in operational use.
Greenough is a Historic Village managed by the National Trust. There are many fine buildings of great significance. One is a large building consisting of the Police Station, Court House, Gaol, stables and living quarters for police and other staff. The building was in use at a Police Station and Court House from 1870 to 1930. Three photos have been added to the Gallery: view of the building from the street; the Charge Room; and the Court Room

FlyingPigSquadron has landed! Old Police Camp in Donald Victoria has been recreated on the original site from heritage buildings. The original camp was set up by the town founder, Johann Meyer, in 1874 and features a lock-up and stables (1883), brick kiln and a shepherd’s hut from the pioneering Donald family’s founding property, Banyenrong, which was opened up in 1844
Camden Police Barracks were built in 1878. Earlier the Police presence was maintained with a timber lock-up and adjoining residence (c.1844) for the Chief Constable on the site of the present courthouse.
The barracks are a good example of the police buildings for that period. The verandah was once enclosed but has been fully restored in recent times.
The new Camden LAC is currently being constructed at the corner of Camden Valley Way and Wilson Crescent Narellan. Camden Police Station will close during 2011.

Hi; Found this old Lock-Up in a little country town called Fingal (Tasmania). I belive it was associated with a permanent station many years ago. It was mainly used to "house" felons who had committed crimes on the East Coast during their transportation to Hobart or Launceston.
Fingal is now mainly a farming region, but once a mining community; little mining is done in the area today. Coal is one of the minerals taken from this area.
TFTC and cheers; OldSaint.

This was once the police station in Wallaroo, South Australia. These days it is used as a mental health facility, and all of the Copper Coast area relies on the police station located in Kadina.
Despite the simple red brick construction, the Greek style portico makes this building a real gem in an otherwise architecturally bland region.

Norwood Police station. Still in use, but dates back to 1938 (the left part of the building obviously). It is even heritage listed, stating its significance as:
"The Norwood Courthouse is one of only a few police courthouse buildings erected in the Adelaide metropolitan area in the interwar period. It reflects a significant change in policy of justice administration which decentralised police courts to suburban locations. The Norwood building is considered to be the most intact of three such courts built in the Georgian Revival style which accommodated both police and court functions within the same building." Blackwood Police Station
Since 1840, i.e. almost since the first settlement of South Australia, police personnel have been deployed in the Mitcham Hills area, initially at the ‘Government Farm’ (later to become the celebrated National Park at Belair the first National Park in S.A. and believed to be the second in Australia).
Over the years police personnel were then stationed at various temporary rented locations in the Belair and Blackwood area prior to the provision of a permanent police station.
This was initially situated in rented premises on Main Road Belair from 1923 to 1930, prior to the construction of a purpose built police station building at 17 Coromandel Parade Blackwood m 1930, during the time when the well known and highly respected Mounted Constable Albert Huxley was officer in charge.
This building served as the local Blackwood police station, initially as a ‘traditional’ inner rural police station until into the late 1970’s, and later as a police office until closure in 2000.
On Thursday 15 March 2001, members of the Mitcham Hills community celebrated the opening of a new Meals on Wheels headquarters in the former Blackwood police station building.

Russell Street Police Station, Melbourne.
This was the headquarters for the Victoria Police until around 1980. Viewers of the series "Homicide" may recognise it from the opening titles of the show. You may also recall the "Russell Street bombing" in 1986, at this site.
The original front of the building is now used as apartments, while the rear (eastern side) has been demolished to make room for the high-rise building you can see on the right of the photo.

This is the Paluma Police Station.Ihave not been able to find any information about this one but by the look of the buildings(station on right, residence on left and lockup out the back)I would guess it dates back to the 70's, and from memory it was closed in the 90's.Today the buildings are used by James Cook University for a research station.Following is some info on the village which I found on the net.
Paluma Village , nestled amongst the misty clouds. Located within the Mount Spec National Park , it is the southernmost point in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. At 1000 metres above sea level, Paluma is a cool mountain retreat with a convenient lack of mobile phone coverage. With cosy accommodation, cafes, arts and craft, bird watching and a large network of rainforest walks, Paluma promises the perfect getaway for a quiet, romantic weekend, or place to unwind.
In the heart of the Paluma Village is McClelland’s Lookout, with views across the range that will simply take your breath away. The rainforest is home to an abundance of wildlife, such as the northern barred frog, white tailed rat, northern bettong, the rare green ringtail possum and Herbert River ringtail possum. You may also see a golden bower bird, bird of paradise, chowchilla, macleay’s honeyeater, or, if you are lucky, an endangered southern cassowary.
Paluma is also as rich in history as it is in nature. Tin-mining in the late 1800’s, along with an involvement in WWII, made Paluma a hive of activity and this is captured throughout the village on interpretive heritage signage.

This really is a nice spot to to visit. Thanks for the cache Beagle Team.
Yarraman Police Station. The original station was built around 1925 and has had many alterations. Coming out of the door is the Officer in charge of Yarraman. Actually he wanted to be in the photo. Yarraman is a small country town on the edge of the Darling Downs and South Burnett Areas with a town population of around 1500.

Oatlands Police Station. Still in use after over 100 yrs
This is the old Victor Harbor police station and court house. A new police station and court house were built in the last 2 years and this building was put up for sale. The medical centre next door bought it with plans to expand into the area. But because of heritage issues and restrictions the medical centre has put the premises back up for sale.

Berry Police Station has been in operation for over 90 years in its present location. Prior to this it was located in Pulman St. It has a large lock up at the rear & horse stables, all well maintained.
Berry is unusual in that it was established as a private town in 1883, as part of the vast Coolangatta Estate by David Berry. He had inherited the estate from his brother Alexander Berry, founder with Edward Wollstonecraft of the estate in 1822 with a grant of 10,000 acres and an allocation of 100 convicts.
In a letter dated 20th January 1888 to Alexander Hay, David Berry refers to the fact that 1500 pounds had been placed in the estimates for the building of the courthouse with the Department understanding that it may cost more than this before it is finished.
The Governor of N.S.W. His Excellency The Right Honorable Charles Robert Baron Carrington proclaimed on Tuesday 18th of June 1889 on page 4244 of Government Gazette No. 317 that the Court of Petty Sessions established in the Government Gazette of 23rd of August 1872 at Broughton Creek with jurisdiction over the Police District of Shoalhaven be abolished and the said court be held at Berry and exercise civil and criminal jurisdiction to the Police District of Shoalhaven.
The Court House is next door & was designed in 1891 by James Barnett in the Greek Revival style. It cost 1658 pounds to build.

Found on a afternoon drive to Southport. The former Telegraph and Police Station sites were established during the brief period of Southport’s existence. The establishment of a Telegraph and Police Station at Southport was evidence of the belief in the Township’s future. However the fickle fortunes of the gold fields were to turn Southport into a ghost town by 1889.
The old Southport Police Station in the Northern Territory. The only thing left is the foundations, but still a very very interesting site. Found in the company of Gibbo.

All those parcels of land in the Town site of Southport in the Northern Territory of Australia containing a total area of 4040 square metres more or less being Lots 199 and 200. The Telegraph Station site is situated on Lot 200 Township of Southport (34 Aldridge Street). The Police Station site is situated on Lot 199 Township of Southport (33 Ringwood Road).

The site is a reminder of the early drive for settlement in the Northern Territory by the South Australian government. The site is now in ruins with the most obvious features being the remnant foundation of both buildings. There is an extensive scatter of historic archaeological material found across the Lots. This archaeological material allows a significant insight into the past living conditions of the public officers at Southport. This site is one of the few places in Darwin that contains physical evidence of the contact between local Aboriginal people and Europeans.

Was visiting Collie in WA and came across this one which is now a gallery. No history signs around it though to say when it was abandoned etc. The new one is about 2 blocks away directly behind the motel I was in. A bit of googling came up with the following...
The Old Police Station was thought to have been built in 1899, by W.C Rose. 1900 the stables were built, and in 1908 the Constables quaters were built. (The stables and the Constable Quaters have since been demolished).
The Collie Art Group took over the building in 1971.
You can still view the cells where the prisoners were kept and the small exercise yard, (which now has a roof over it).

the new Itialian restaurent in north Richmond has now opened.
iT WAS'NT ALWAYS THIS WAY.
It was recommended following a parliamentary enquiry that mounted military police be stationed at North Richmond in 1847. The magistrates in Windsor had previously given constables living in the North Richmond district certain responsibilities. Some of these early constables included Edward Merrick, Fred Williams & William Grainger. In 1891 a police station was established in an old cottage on Bells Line of Road. In 1910 a new police station building including a lock up, was approved and constructed at North Richmond. The station was closed in 1933 and the building was rented out as accommodation to various policemen but a eating establishment it has not alwys been.
THANKS

This house was previously the Yanco Police Station. I believe it may have been used as a residence for local officers before it closed completely. Unfortunately, not a lot of history seems to be available on this station. I think it closed sometime around 1999-2000, and was coverted to a house sometime after that.

This is the old Sandy Bay Police Station, 271 Sandy Bay Road, Sandy Bay, Tasmania. Not sure what it is now, but I'm sure it was never purple when it was a police station and I was a kid.

Charters Towers Police Station - 1910
In the gold rush days, Charters Towers was the second largest centre in Queensland, hosting over 60 hotels and a Stock Exchange. It was a bustling mining town with interests also in sheep and cattle. History abounds in this town with a great deal of the architecture still standing as a proud reminder of the past, including the stately police station, built in 1910 (although a police station had been on that same site since the 1880's). Damaged by fire in 1988, the locals petitioned the National Trust for assistance in saving the station, and the state government provided funds for the repairs which took until 1990 to complete it to its former glory.

This is the former Alawoona Police Station. When I first moved here nearly 20 years ago it was still owned by the Government and used as teacher housing for East Murray Area School some 20 Ks away. Now it is a private residence.
The Colonial Gaol in Guildford.
The police lock up and 2 cells were built in 1841. The police station & gaol closed in November 1969. The gaol is now a museum. More info in the pictures.

The front of the former Bordertown Police Station now forms the backdrop of the new Bordertown Visitor and Information Centre, a fascinating place to stop on a long trip. The Visitor Centre comprises a coffee shop/cafe full of antiques, collectables and memorabilia, well worth a look. The facade of the Police Station reads "Bordertown Police Station, Police est. 1854, Stationhouse Built 1930" (see photos).
Spotted this old, still in use police station in Gladstone NSW. Gladstone is recognised as an historic village, and the police station, built in 1898, is heritage listed.
13 Cambridge Road, Bellerive, was built as a Police Station by local builder Peter Denholm in 1930, and is next door to the original Police Station, listed in my first log. It is now the Eastern District Adult Community Mental Health Service - Bellerive Centre.
Police Station and Watch House c 1842
One of the oldest buildings in Bellerive, the original section contains a tiny cell. Weatherboard cells built at a later date can be found behind the building. The building was also used as the municipality's Council Chambers, the district library and the Bellerive CIB office. It is now the Bellerive Community Arts Centre.

This is a photo of the former Woolloongabba Police Station in Brisbane. The building was designed and constructed by the Dep't of Public Works in 1912 and continued to be a working Police Station until 1993. It was restored in 2001, removing some later additions and returning the old building as close as possible to the original plans. Even the colour of the paint has been matched to the original. The building is a rare surviving example of a suburban police barracks and of Police building design in Queensland from the early part of the 19th century. It is Heritage listed and is now a QLD Gov't building called Sports House South. Note the light towers of "The Gabba" Cricket Ground in the background.
I spent a bit of time looking for a suitable subject before settling on the Old Emu Plains Police Station. The first Europeans living at Emu Plains were convicts at the Government Agricultural Establishment which operated from 11 September 1819 until 31 August 1832. The main crops appeared to be wheat, maize and tobacco. In 1830, after John Maxwell took over as Superintendent, the focus changed from agricultural to stock and the station house was shared with the local mounted police. After the farm closed in 1832 Surveyor H. F. White White surveyed the land for a town. White followed the contours of the agricultural station, laying out the village and streets along roads and paddocks created by the convict farm. Sometime between 1867 and 1878 a slab cottage was built near the junction of Punt and River Roads, The walls being constructed of vertical Ironbark slabs and the kitchen building of sandstock brickwork. 1st Class Constable William Bressington bought the cottage in 1891 and used it as his abode and police station until 1908, when a new police station was built in Punt road. This 1986 photo by Fox and Associates shows the building as it was.
photo courtesy Penrith City Library The Old Emu Plains Police Station was burnt down by an arsonist in August 1996. Penrith Council commissioned a final recording of the destroyed building before it was demolished and the remains removed. The foundations were left and covered with sandy soil and grassed over to conserve them for future investigation. These photos show the site and part of the foundations.

This pic is of the Wellington Courthouse which is on the banks of the Murry shortly before it meets the mighty coorung. The courthouse was shared with a police station where i imagine that the constable would have spent lots of time dealing with the drunken loots in the pub next door (which is apparently the oldest in SA)

We came across the Wedderburn Police Station while caching in between Bendigo and Boort in north-central Victoria.
The Officer in Charge, Sergeant Frank tells me it was originally built as a courthouse in 1876 and converted into a Police station in the mid 1980s. As the staff has expanded the original holding cell has now been converted into his office.
Sgt. Frank is passionate about his historical old police station and has drawn up a draft plan for the inevitable extensions without detracting from the historical building.
I hope you agree it qualifies for Hello Hello What Have We Got Here

Maranboy, once site of one of Australia’s biggest tin mines, is today a ghost town with the police complex the only buildings and members and their families the only residents. The general topography of the district ranges from rocky, sparsely vegetated areas to thickly timbered and dense scrubby areas, well watered by creeks and springs. Cattle stations make up approximately thirty per cent of the district. The climate is northern Australian wet summer and dry winter seasons, temperatures ranging between a high of 38oC during the day in summer and as low as 4oC at night in winter.
In 1917 John Flynn of the Royal Flying Doctors Service and Australian Inland Mission established a hospital-nursing station at Maranboy, which continued until 1931. The hospital building, known as the Penola Hostel, was later used as police station, post office and police residence.
The photos attached are the old cell and the old police station which are both standing as depicted in the photos today. I have also included a photo of the current police station in use today and another photo of the old trackers quarters.
