Description

Lieutenant Colonel George Barney

From 19th May 1792 to 16th July 1862, Lieutenant Colonel George Barney lived his life. He was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Royal Engineers in July 1808 and served in the Peninsular war and in the West Indies, where he took part in the capture of Guadeloupe in 1815. He was promoted second captain in 1813 and captain in 1825. On 1 January 1849 Barney was appointed chief commissioner of crown lands and in October 1851 was nominated to the Legislative Council of which he had been a member briefly in 1843 as colonial engineer. On 11 October 1855 he was appointed surveyor-general in succession to Sir Thomas Mitchell. Barney died at The Priory, St Leonards, Sydney, on 16 April 1862 and was buried in St Thomas's cemetery. This cache is here to commemerate Lieutenant Colonel George Barney in his wonderfull ways of engineering. I hope that this cache could encourage cachers to look further into Barney's history and life!

A tricky find today as the GPS has us 20m away from the location, but the hint was extremely useful and the geocache was soon in hand. A lovely place for a Sunday morning stroll.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks for placing this geocache here for us Victorians to find today.

Passed by this cache while undertaking a couple of GC adventure labs and joyriding on Emerald class ferries. I figured it would be crazy to not have a look for it and was able to make a straightforward find. I did appreciate the hint though I probably wouldn't have needed it, but it saved time and ensured I didn't miss my next ferry ride. TFTC

We are waitng to board our ship .the coords are 20 metres out TFT

here on the governor's business. had to wait for workers setting things up here to move on before zipping into the garden (I hate walking into gardens for caches) and making a very quick find. TFTC Smile

Today the Family went for a harbor tour with the Tas5 visitors. Fast ferries, beautiful views, lots of sun on a nice day and a number of great caches were found in the vicinity between Circular Quay and Darling Harbor.

Thank you Crazyheads for putting the cache out and maintaining it.

Wasn't expecting to be in this area today, but as things turned out....

Searched for a few minutes before finding the right spot and the cache was soon in hand. Now I know its been said before, but I wasn't prepared for finding a cache so didn't have a pen. Did the next best thing and took a photo of the logs sheet with my GPS. Hope that is ok. Any major issues, let me know.

Thanks crazyheads....neat little piece of history around here....with great views of the ship at the OPT.

I had about 10 minutes to kill while the missus was checking out the shops in the Rocks, so I bound down to check out the statue and it was only a few minutes later that I spotted the cheeky hiding spot. Lots of people out and about today but not in the immediate vicinity of the statue, so no problems with muggle interception today. TFTC The Crazyheads

With a bit of time before heading off to the ship, I figured that I'd have a shot at this one. There were a few people enjoying the sunshine nearby so I expedited the search by reading the hint Embarassed after which, I had the stash in hand at 12:35 with no muggle any the wiser. Wink

TNLNSL. Thanks The Crazyheads.

One of our first finds for the day. Not everyday you find a GCA trad in the city - all in order. Thanks The Crazyheads.

Did a little night caching run while staying in Sydney ... I love walking around this area late at night. This one was the first of the evening and took a while, I think because my GPSr was playing up. Great to find an old cache that has lasted so long and with the original logsheet ... I found a spot on that to sign my name before I realised that someone had added new sheet.

Thanks for the hide Crazyheads

found with alnic and lachnic on a day caching and munzeeing in the city. Al found it in amongst all the people sitting around eating and enjoying the sun & entertainment

#GA148 - 12:25; I didn't have time to stop for this one on my last visit, but with a little time left to kill before boarding the tall ship for the lunch time cruise, the ideal opportunity presented itself today. Made my way to GZ and took the time to read the plaque before examining the terrain for the likely hide. Didn't take too long to identify potential spots and soon had the cache in hand. The log was quite full, but managed to find a spot to sign along the edge. TFTC The Crazyheads Very Happy

10/05/14. 2:05 PM. GCA cache #17. With GC.com caches in the city all but found (under 30 left within 10kms - see my Bookmark List "KRS unfound 10kms etc etc"), it is high time I turned my attention to GCAs. This is only my 2nd or 3rd GCA physical cache, I think. And my first capture for Clan Cerberus (go blue!). Log was very full, but I could write sideways. TFTC Twisted EvilClan Cerberus

Found on a short weekend trip to Sydney, to watch "The Music of Queen" at the Opera House. After some German breakfast, we walked down to this beautiful park to get this one. The co-ords took me to one side, but the hint stated the other. We looked around for a bit, with lots of muggles above us, then after a few minutes it was finally found. Nicely hidden. A beautiful monument. The log is now pretty much full. TFTC!

Found today with GrimRaider on a visit to Circular Quay to sail in a Tall Ship. Lots of great history to find here, often in tucked away places. This is one of those and it was great to read about Lt Barney. We managed to pick up a fair bit of rubbish too. TFTC

Came here twice, but couldn't get close to the wall as there were always muggles around. This time there was only a group sitting far away.

Nice little cottage right outside the bustling Circular Quay.

SL, took pathtag.
TFTPathtag rogerw3, TFTC The Crazyheads!

...and as I walked away, there was what seemed to be a hen's night challenge: teams had to get a random male passerby to hold a "ring", get down on one knee and pose for a "wedding proposal" photo, in front of William Bligh's statue:P

Found this one while in the area looking for trig Stations, An easy find in a spot that could be busy but was quiet today, except for the police car parked in the street right next to the cache, I did not see them until after I had done the deed. They obviously knew about the cache as they gave me the thumbs up before driving on!
Signed log and left signature Pathtag.
Thanks for the cache.

The SamWalker boys had a great time. We wandered around the markets at the Rocks and dropped into some favourite shops up George Street and found a GCA traditional.
After all the movables and gnomes it came as something of a surprise to find a trad.
Lots of people around but caching with kids means you needn't worry about being seen - I just had to sit there and look long suffering.

It would be good if you could come past with a new log some time soon.

06-Jul-11
I’m staying in Sydney for work this week, so tonight I decided to prowl around the city looking for caches. I walked from my hotel in Surry Hills to the Harbour Bridge, and this cache was on route. I spotted a likely hiding spot fairly quickly, and on closer inspection a cache was revealed. I signed the log under cover of darkness and replaced the cache to its cleverly concealed location. Everything is in good condition, and nice and dry. I then set off in search of the bridge! Cool little cache, thanks Crazyheads!

We were wandering around The Rocks and made an easy find here as old George stood as still as a statue and watched the muggles walking by.

The hide was nicely placed and in good condition.

I had 40 minutes to kill this morning at the Quay after an appointment before the ferry to take me to the next one. So I strolled around the corner to look for the cache. Every other time I have been here the area has been quite crowded, but today it was very quiet for some reason. Quickly made the grab and returned to the stone wall to sign, before popping it back in its hidey hole. Thanks Crazyheads.

A straight forward cache provided the muggles don't see you.
Was here sightseeing with my American cousin and his family. Saw this was nearby and went to have a look.

I had some time to kill before a meeting today, so was showing a colleague how geocaching worked. He proved a quick learner, and found the cache before I did!

Thanks Crazyheads!

This was the third of my seven caches today -- most located in the Circular Quay area.

I found the Barney Memorial very easily, and didn't need the GPSr to spot the likely hiding place.

The little cache container was in good shape and the log was dry. TNLNSL.

If you visit here, make sure you check out nearby Cadman's Cottage. I hadn't seen it for many years and it was great to inspect it again, albeit briefly.

Many thanks to The Crazyheads! This cache of theirs is a lot different from the last two I found out on Narrow Neck, in the Blue Mountains.

'Three Thumbs Up' for the great location on Circular Quay, naer The Rocks.

Quit a busy day in Sydney today. However at GZ I had the place to myself and made a quick and easy log after enjoying the historic site nearby as well.

I'm back in Sydney again, this time satying in the city, this time I made sure I brought the details of the GCA caches in the city to pick up a few more local finds.

Caught up with family tonight, so I did not get down to Circular Quay until well after dark, which proved useful as there were no muggles around (except for a few wandering along the nearby street), and the darkness proved to be very good cover. On the other hand I had to feel more than look - which was slightly dirty work.

I nearly gave up once, luckily I went back for another look and found the treasure safe and sound in it's hidey spot. Log signed, back in place, Thanks for the nice hide and history lesson.

Mission Status: SUCCESS GCA166
Hunt Time: GZ 2mins
Muggle Factor: 2 (Low)

Cache Status: Good Condition

Report: Due to pressing time constraints I had to abandon my efforts on Hidden History #12 and make a quick grab for the day. This was my last traditional in the CBD and as usual the GPSr was near useless. So I had to follow the hint and quickly found what would otherwise be a cleverly concealed cache. Sunday was nice and quiet with not many people around and as always it was great to explore this part of the city.

WanderingAus wandered by on day 122 of our annual Climatic Refugee trip, and took quite a while to find this one. The gpsr was not being at all helpful, whenever I closed in it told me it was behind me. After checking above and below for over 10 minutes I resorted to the "Where would I hide it?" method, and within another 5 minutes managed a GAFF 0 find.

My find No 3030, TNLNSL.

#5 of 6 along the Quay area for the morning heading home from a job.
VERY glad of the hint, as the cache was about 8M from where the GPSr wanted me to look.
Again, the hi-vis vest meant that no-one took any notice of me as I wndered about.
thanks.

On a course in the area so I checked out the nearest cache and this was it! I brought a work friend with me who was amazed at the whole concept!!! We enjoyed a lovely stroll along the waterfront and then went to the little park to find the cache. My friend did a really good job of looking around and it wasn't long before we found the little hidey hole and wrote in the log. Great little spot, TFTC

I'm not sure what rudi63 was talking about, this cache is certainly intact, with the original log sheet etc. A good hide, which stood out from a cacher's perspective, but I doubt it would be found by accident. A very interesting memorial/piece of history. Thanks for the cache The Crazyheads

11:36 am.

Almost walked away from this cache as there was a food festival on the nearby road, but the benefits of a piglet cannot be denied.

"Are you hiding from me, I'm coming after you". And the cache was in hand.

Thanks Crazyheads. Nice little cache.

A clever hiding place with lots of possibilities.
Read all about George while waiting for a group of school kids to finish their history lesson. Spied some likely spots and it was in the third one I picked. A nice place with a nice bit of history thrown in as well.
Thanks

As a engineer myself it is good to see one from the past being recognised for their achievements.

The cache was easily found once there was a break in the muggles.

The adjacent building the Cadmans Cottage, is also worth a look here, and of course you can wander throught he rocks.

Found at 18:15 after half an hour of poking around and utilising flash photography because I didn't have a torch. Minor panic trying to put it back in, I couldn't remember where its hiding place was!

Took sticker, ladybeetle and bead, left bell and small bag of shinies.

The log's started on the other side, but there's still plenty of room.

Found by Pi.

Had to pick up our tickets for the trip out to Fort Denison nearby so decided to try my hand at this cache. Pretty easy find considering the coords are a bit off and the place was crawling with muggles (not to mention the construction workers right next door). Nice spot and rather pertinent considering where we were heading.

Had the opportunity to leave the GPSr on the ground in a location that was above the cache and got what I hope are some better numbers but honestly you don't need them as the clue gives all the information required. Had the hidey-hole spied within seconds of arriving at the monument.

TFTC,
GPS.

P.S. Have often wondered about using that type of cache container, good to see they work.

28-Jul-07
Noted this hadn't been "found" for a while, so thought I'd have a go. Got it fairly quickly using the clues, but the co-ords were at best 10m and more like 20m out for mine? Maybe it was the Sat gods or all the tall buildings / foliage? Anyway logged it under cover of darkness (well as dark as it gets here). Thanks for the cache! Find #7 for today.

Now this is something new

I got a couple of GCA ones to do

So it good to see some GCA ones about

The last of three during a Tuesday lunch break with The Wandering Wilkos

We had tried this one the week before but a muggle was having a siesta right on top of the cache so we thought it best to leave this one for another day and today was that day.

Very nice placement, bring your lunch, and have a little nap after. The perfect lunch spot.

Together with Toonarmy this one was a lunchtime hat-trick. We grabbed this cache on the second attempt because the first time we tried, there was a muggle asleep on the front of the monument that prevented us from getting at it. Nice to find a dry log for a change as last night's rain seems to have dampened a few of the cities Mico's

Arrived back in the country and had things to do in the city & thought I could knock off a couple of the new CBD caches along the way. This one was not to be as they have laid some new turf nearby and the area is currently cordoned off. Another week or so and it should be good to go again.

Took a trip to the Quay and boy was there a party going on - thankfully party/concert = large distraction and diversion from a stealthy geocacher Wink

After about 10 young men had peed on the wall it was time for me to look for the cache - blechh - anyway thankfully I went straight to it - touching nothing but the container.

And to my astonishment I was the first to find! Philma must be on holidays...

Took nothing left an American quarter - have just realised I wrote dime in the log - oh well an American coin.

Thanks for the hunt and the history lesson in a spot that I always love to visit. Good one Crazy heads.

Cheers
