Description

A Truck Accident that led to a Huge Explosion

Traveling south heading home after the Alice Springs Red Centre Event our party came across the site of an amazing incident which could have been so much worse than it was. A truck carrying Ammonium Nitrate fertilizer crashed, and when he burning diesel fuel reached the fertilizer - Boom ! Several people were injured but were lucky to survive. The damage to the area was enormous, with both rail and road bridges being destroyed. There are notice boards at the site well worth stopping and reading - while you find this cache of course !

BYO Pen.

Happy Hunting !

Today we headed south from Charleville towards Wyandra. We were not sure how far we would get in the time allotted. This was one of the caches we had targetted. We were aware of the explosionput visiting the site certaiunly brought home the damage that the ammonium nitrate deisel mix will do.

Thanks for this cache Fitzy_1965. The container and contents were in very good condition.

With 'home' for the night relatively close now, I stopped by here for this trio of hides. This ended up being the only find and once at the georecognisable GZ, I was soon signing the log at 17:05. Dancing

The info boards provide some amazing information about this incredible incident... even more incredible was no one getting killed. Seeing the infrastructure is an eye opener. TFTC fitzy_1965.

Wow what a bang that must have been. Thanks for placing this cache for us to enjoy. I guess we would have seen the results of the explosion - they are very hard to miss, but we probably would have missed the memorial without the cache. Thanks Fitzy. SL. DancingDancing

And what a bang it was. TFTC fitzy_1965. If not for you, I would probably have rolled right past this spot, and missed a dramatic and heroic story.

Four thumbs up!

During the 2017 Alice event trip I stopped here with the team and Fitzy chose to put this out. Somehow I missed making a note of it and missed the first finder. I am now logging my find here.

Thanks

Congrats to Youngoldfella on the first to find. Been a long while coming this one....

What an interesting area.....and incident. Can't remember hearing anything about it at the time, however the information board and photos certainly paint a grim picture.

Heading back from Alice Springs / Darwin and we placed a few new Geocaching Australia caches to increase our presence in the area, and to also give those travelling in the area a reason to get off the road for break. Hope others find this area as interesting as we did.

Thanks for the cache fitzy_1965...

#GA2447 - 00:00; I was with the CO when he placed this cache on Day 28 of our Alice Mega Road Trip, as we headed south for home. Another one which has taken eight months for someone to make the first find! An interesting spot on the highway that I would have thought might get more visitors. (FTF). I worked in Charleville from mid 1986 till the end of 1989 and drove this road on a regular basis. The rail bridge will not be replaced as the Cunnamulla line is closed. Drove down to have a look at the information display. Nice area. Parked safe and took the short stroll to GZ. All good here. TFTC Fitzy_1965 Clan MinotaurRibbitI'm a Gnome, duh!Very Happy
