Description

This is a history cache. Answers can be found on the sign at the co-ordinates.

The Mount Isa to Camooweal Road was built during WWII as part of the inland defence road system. In 1940, as the war moved closer, the defence of northern Australia became an urgent issue. Prior to 1940 the road west was a track that ran close to the telegraph line erected in 1897. By working around the clock the road was gravelled and bridges neared completion by October 1942. By late 1943 the Mount Isa to Camooweal Road was bitumen sealed.

You can see a part of the original road that was preserved when the new road nearby was constructed in 1994.

To log the cache you need to go the Questions and Answers section on the right hand side. With correct answers you'll be given a code that will allow you to log. The questions are:

Qu1. How much shorter in length was the new road than the original?

a) 30 miles

b) 20 miles

c) 10 miles

Qu2. To what width was the Mount Isa to Camooweal Road bitumen sealed?

a) 14 feet

b) 15 feet

c) 16 feet

Qu3. In the photos on the info board, what size bulldozer was used?

a) D4

b) D7

c) D8

What a bonus 3 for 1 here, GCA Trad, GC Trad and a history cache. Lots of people here today, some camped, some passing through.

TFTC and the history lesson, I had commented the side road was very narrow, now I know how narrow!

We travelled 8,500km through 5 states for a 60th birthday party over approx. 6 weeks. We endured many days over 35C and then saw a lot of water in the eastern states. We enjoyed travelling east with family and then they travelled back to Alice and we made our way home to SA, trying to dodge the rain and wet weather.
Caching is a great way to see the many wonderful sights and learn about the places we are travelling through.
Thank you to those who take the time to hide caches

Continuing our trip through Outback Queensland, grabbing caches along the way. TFTC. BigSmile

The local motorcycle club was using the road out the front as a racetrack and the carpark for pits.

Spending a few days in Mt Isa and finding a few caches while we are at it. A trip to Camooweal and the border was on the agenda and we stopped at this interesting area to grab the GC cache and this one. Finding the required info was easy...logging the cache was a whole different story.

We had never encountered a GCA 'history' cache before but with tons of help from the CO's we eventually earned a smiley face. I think we were overthinking the requirements...pretty simple when you know how....not one we will forget in a hurry Embarassed

Hope we encounter another similar cache soon so we can use our new skills Very Happy

Many thanks GEONO. for the cache and all your help. ClappingClappingClappingDancingDancingDancing

Pulled in to the rest stop for a cuppa and thought "This would make a good cache", check the app, and presto. Off I went to photograph the information board so I could answer the questions and log it later.

All done.

I'm really pleased the road has been upgraded again.

Thanks for the cache GEONO.

Stopped here overnight on my way home from the Red Centre Experience in Alice Springs. I pulled up near the memorial as it was late when I arrived and I didn't want to disturb other travelers (and the toilets were handy). Found the traditional cache when I pulled up, it really was park and grab. Had a restful night and then went over to have a look at this memorial in the morning. Until you actually travel these areas, you cannot fully appreciate the vast distances involved and what an achievement building roads is in the outback. It may be a long trip along here but at least it is now comfortable and reasonably safe.
