Description
Penola South Australia
Penola is a town in the Australian state of South Australia located about 338 kilometres (210 mi) southeast of the state capital of Adelaide in the wine growing area known as the Coonawarra. At the 2006 census, Penola had a population of 1,317.
It is known as the central location in the life of Mary MacKillop (St. Mary of the Cross), the first Australian to gain Roman Catholic sainthood, who alongside Julian Tenison Woods in 1866 established the first free Catholic school using the Woods/MacKillop Catholic education system in Australia, St. Joseph's School. Woods and MacKillop also established in Penola 'her' order of nuns, the Congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. The order, otherwise known as the 'Josephites' or 'Brown Joeys', continue to work with the poor and needy communities throughout the world today. (Thansk to Wikipedia for that info....)
So this is where Mary MacKillop started her work. If you'e been caching for a while, you may have found the odd 'Mary MacKillop' cache around the traps. However this cache is not about Mary herself, its about her home town and the way into it from the north.
This is another cache placed in an area that is a little devoid of Geocaching Australia caches, and gives travellers the chance to grab another cache. Oh, and if you like a good drop of wine, the Coonawarra area cellar doors are just down the road.
Hope you enjoy the area.....
(LuckyL10n was with me when the cache was placed and will log his find after the first to find has been claimed.)

A nice, clean, dry cache and log. Many thanks for the hide Sol de lune
A quick find here in the dark while on the way home from a weekend in the south-east! I've found many of Mary MacKillop caches all over the country...
TFTC
We have found some of Travelling Sister's Mary McKillop cache hides during our travels and do maintenance on her four caches in northern Tasmania. Our route today did not include Penola however we did pass this cache. It was a quick stop later in the day to find the cache. We dont think any of the motorists whizzing by took any notice of what we were doing.
The container and contents were in very good condition dispite several spiders building webs along the blue clips.
Thanks for the cache Sol de Lune it was nice to have another GCA cache to look for on our way home.
Thanks again Sol de lune
