Description

Dedicated to the extremities of Australia

The idea of this cache is to find the extremities of Australia.

This can be geographical, such as the most northerly point of Australia (mainland)

Or, it can be a landmark such as the highest town in Australia.

Or, something like Australia's Southern most pub!!

Let your imagination run wild...there are many ways to complete this cache.

Some other examples are the highest bowls club at Guyra,

Lamberts geographical centre of Australia, the most south/west/easterly

point of Australia, Mt Kosciuszko, etc.

To log a find for this cache you must post a photo with either:-

A sign describing the location, or

Photo of co-ordinates on GPS and a photo of the surrounding area and a note

on the significance of the area.

Being a Birder this was very appropriate! Eagles Nest is Australia's Highest Restaurant at the top of the Thredbo Chairlift. With amazing views

25-May-17
Mt Wycheproof, Australia's smallest registered mountain at 43 metres. It has a trig point, a communications tower, a picnic area and longdrop toilet, great views and a sign proclaiming it's claim to fame. We've been looking for something for this locationless for a while, drove past Victoria's most outback pub a couple of days ago without taking a photo so relieved to get this one! TFTC

06-Dec-16
Australia's most northern hotel, Thursday Island.

The Torres Strait Hotel's claim is 'Australia's Top Pub'.

17-Jan-16
The northernmost point of Mainland Australia. We were here a few years ago, on Mrs Shifter's birthday.
Thanks Geoscrubbers

Found this sign up at Mt Victoria while taking a photo of the nearby trig S33° 35.741 E150° 15.450 I don't know how high it is but apparently it is the highest point in the City of Blue Mountains

22-Oct-14
HIGHEST CARAVAN PARK
At the top of the range on the NSW Northern Tablelands is Guyra with the highest caravan park in Australia. During winter this would undoubtedly be the coldest caravan park in Australia as well.....but who doesn't love some fresh mountain air, especially with the heater blasting away on high!

HIGHEST CITY
Situated on the Northern Tablelands of NSW, Armidale is the highest city in Australia and now has a brand new sign to boast it. Armidale's elevation is between 980 and 1,110 metres, depending whether you're on a hill or dale.

This is the most southern point of the path of Major Thomas Mitchell's expedition across western and central Victoria in 1836.
The cairn is located on picnic hill, which provides good views from Cape William Grant to Cape Nelson. The Cape Nelson wind farm can also be seen, and heard from the look out.
A Cairn erected here marks this as the most southern point reached during the expedition.
Thanks for the bonus cache at this GC cache site (GC1KGAN).

Found this some time back but have just realised there is a cache for it. Out on the west coast of Tas, over looking the wild seas. Don't fall in because next stop is Argentina......

Kimba, halfway across Australia

28-Dec-11
The highest restaurant in Australia at Mt Crackenback, just a little above Thredbo....1937 metres above sea level.

You arrive at the top of the chairlift and then walk almost straight into the restaurant. We only had a bit of morning tea, but the views (and the chairlift ride) are well worth the visit.

Thanks for the fun locationless.....

15-Nov-11
Claiming this because it sounds like a geographical extreme.

Cape Leeuwin, a magnificent lighthouse, and also this is the spot here the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean. This is Australia's most Southwestern spot. WhistleRolling Eyes

26-Sep-11
We went as far south as it is possible to drive a car in Australia - past Recherche Bay in Tasmania to Cockle Creek where the sign says "Australia's southernmost street the End of the Road".
We pushed on for another km through the campground until the road REALLY ends. Then we found what was once the southernmost GC cache in Tasmania (now second most). Just realised there was a GCA cache not far away but it's got DNFs against it anyway.

13-Sep-11
The Ninety Mile Straight, the longest straight road in Australia, 146.6km Surprisingly, the drive was not boring and we did not feel drowsy at any time. Interesting scenery, flora and wildlife along the road as we drove along.

Two photos: sign at western end (S32 27.181 e123 57.197); sign at eastern end (S32 16.190 E125 29.041) have been added to the gallery.

A pleasant days outing for any cacher, pair or family; is to take this epic train ride and see the flora and fauna as you travel along the 2ft guage to Deep Bay. TFTC and cheers; OldSaint.

Eromanga is a small isolated town in far western Queensland. this little town does not have much but is the road access to the jackson oil and gas fields as well as the ervice town for the producing oil fields in the area. eromanga is also the town that is the farthest from any coastline in Australia. Diesel here on the day I visited was $1.54.8 cents/l.

05-Oct-10
Went to the Eureka Sky Deck 88 floors above Melbourne and just had to take a photo of this and then realised this was a bit extreme. We were there just before dusk and we got the day and night view of Melbourne. You certainly can see a long way from up here.

10-Sep-10
this might not be extremes in distances but for our location this gives you the extremes we go through living on the edge of the desert the first is of about Mid 2009 and the next is taken on the 10-09-10 from drought to flood

22-Aug-10
baby&Mrs gopher spent some time here both caching and bird watching. Here is the Tessellated pavement on the east coast of Tasmania near Dunalley.Even where the Kelp Gull is sitting on the rock is tessellated.

Australia's Most Eastern Mailand Point - Cape Byron

Third cache is 3 minutes... Cape Byron Trig, Cape Byron Lighthouse, Most Eastern Point! How's that for a GCA trifecta? Absolutely perfect day here in Byron, and as I have cleared out all the regular caches I needed to get creative... enter the Locationless!

The sign says that you are at Lat.42 10.54 and Long.146 30.00.If you are near this location you are in the centre of Tasmania. There is a cain and out in the water is a post that is the centre. We stopped here to have look for a GC cache.

This is Melbourne as seen from Mt Cottrell. It may be one of the largest cities in the world but seen from here it Looks lost in a barren land.

13-Jul-10
Just north of Alice Springs, a monument has been erected to mark the highest point on the Stuart Highway between Adelaide and Darwin. The altitude is not mentioned on the plaque, but the GPS recorded 724 metres.

04-Jul-10
Found by baby&Mrs gopher some time ago. After having passed the turn off to the Lambert Centre on previous trips going west from Finke. It was decided to go to the Geographical Center of this great country. There seems to be some quiries as to the exact centre but the sign is close enough for us.Drove in from Kulgra and stayed overnight.Just so much quiet here, most peaceful.

WanderingAus wandered by on day 52 of our annual 'Climatic Refugee' trip, passing through Ravenshoe, and came across the Tully Falls Hotel, "Queensland's Highest Pub". Half an hour earlier we had passed a sign which read "Queensland's Highest Road to Queensland's Highest Town", but it wasn't safe to stop.

The hotel is nowhere near Tully Falls, but it is at an elevation of 916 metres or 3,003.99 feet.

WanderingAus wandered by on day 41 of our annual 'Climatic Refugee' trip, visiting Wallaman Falls and hunting down GC1HW1K Wallaman Falls by hulmgulm and GCTX5X Last Step's a Doozy by Map Monkey, and couldn't resist claiming a find of this cache and at the same time claiming a find of GA2268 Waterfalls by Dave- Tas.

6932325607.jpg

Wallaman falls, at around 338m, holds the title of having the longest single drop of any waterfall in Australia(268m).

Australia's highest regional airport - Armidale NSW. I took my first flight in a glider in the 70s at this airport - winched up, float around then fall rapidly to earth in a controlled manner. The end of that adventure. Much busier nowadays. (Will add a photo when I get home as too expensive on bandwidth when travelling).

08-Apr-10
The eastern most point in Australia. Byron Bay. It is agreat walk from the lighthouse to the end of the point and back.

05-Mar-10
This is called "The Edge of the World".
It is the most westerly point you can go in Tasmania before all that is left is ocean all the way to Argentina.
It is also very windy here!

22-Feb-10
On our trip to the Ulysses AGM in Albany we were able to marvel at this magnificent BIG HOLE - biggest in OZ. Kalgoorlie is so full of history and some good caches too!!!

Caching with renroc.
That's the Trig point at Byron Bay went right out near to the end of the mainland but didn't log it Sad
Had a great time fantastic views!

20-Jan-10
These co-ords are actually for the trig point at Byron Bay. See picture. I was caching with Spottymascot who actually went further east than me while looking for Easterly Extreme. We found it where the GPS said it would be Smile
Don't know when I will be able to log any other extremes though.

Made it to the top! The sign looks familiar...
The goal of the Great Cape York adventure - and there are way to many stories to tell! You will just have to look at the photos.

Darwin has a population of 120,652, making it by far the largest and most populated city in the sparsely populated Northern Territory, but the least populous of all Australia's capital cities. It is the smallest and most northerly of the Australian capital cities, and acts as the Top End's regional centre.

22-Jun-09
South east cape the southernmost point of the Tasmanian mainland, there are islands further south. Photo was taken from South Cape Bay on the way to a cache called South Coast Chaos which is Australia's most southern cache. This cache is a 50km round trip walk.

17-Jun-09
Here's a photo I had taken ages ago at the most Southern point of Australia's mainland - sorry about the dodgy photo, it was getting dark.

Highest Vehicle Access in WA: 1016m
Mount Nameless in Tom Price - 4WD only.

This mountain (hill to you east-coasters) is right in Tom Price, and there is a very nice 4WD track driving up it. When we got to the top there was 8 or 9 army vehicles up there, with learner drivers, practising on the 4WD-ing. Unfortunately this meant it also took us half an hour to get down....

Nice views from up here. Thanks for the cache!

29-Dec-08
I did the walk up to the top of Flinders Peak in the You Yangs - according to Parks Victoria at http://www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/1park_display.cfm?park=208, this is the highest peak in the You Yangs. Elevation is officially 340m, but my GPSr read 345m at the base of the steps up to the lookout platform where I recorded the coords. Lots of steps (in fact there are apparently 450 of them), but otherwise the walk is not too tough - just over 1.5km from the carpark with a 200m elevation change once you are standing on the lookout platform (pictured).

05-Dec-08
Two other things.

1) It was rush hour when Winglen's photo was taken. A girls school from Victoria had just entered.

2) It's the bulky clothing in my photo not my girth Sad

30-Nov-08
If not Australia's highest bridge then it's Australia's highest river. It's interesting (to me) that on 11 days before this photo was taken I was at the very other end of the Snowy River - Marlo Victoria. The really good news is that the river is bank to bank all the way down to the sea. Let's hope it stays that way. Thanks to Mrs Winglen for reminding me about this cache and to RexTrex for the photo. I'll leave his caption on the photo.

TFTC and the chance to walk to Kossie. (Okay that's a bit of a stretch.)

30-Nov-08
This is Australia's highest toilet! I passed by here with McPhan and Rex Trex on the way to Kosciuszko Tops, and we called in on the way back. It's built like a fortress to withstand the severe weather conditions, with about 7 or 8 toilets and room for change facility or emergency shelter. Rex was lucky enough to stumble in on several ladies getting changed! Probably putting on extra layers because it was very cold the day we walked up here. And there is waterless hand washing. TFTC!

09-Sep-08
I pass this way very frequently for work - so close to home, yet I never realized this fact!

16-Aug-08
Visited the Cape for a three week safari. Great 4WD'ing and a real adventure.

07-Jul-08
Walked to the top of Kosciuszko on Easter Sunday this year. Was well worth the walk. The pictures included are the view from the top, and my sister-in-law and myself looking rather pooped.

04-Jun-08
The most eastern point in Australia, located at Byron Bay.
We were actually collecting photos to do the very same cache, knew it was a great idea!
We visited Byron Bay in April this year and walked to the most eastern point.
