Description

Access to this cache is via Westrope Road which turns off the main Western Creek Road. The access spur....Westrope 2 & Western Ck. track are well

sign posted. Parking area is at S41 40.568 E146 28.622

From the car park...please don't blindly follow the sign posted Western Creek track...as this is the old original track and quite rough walking. From the

car park facing the tiers...a newer track(part of the sign posted loop track) commences slightly to your left heading south from the car park. The

beginning is a little obscure...once found the track zig zags quite steeply at first then levels out to a more gentle climb. After 10-15 minutes a small

spring can be found which is the only water before reaching the falls. Their are small sections with some rock scrambling with the track a little obscure

.... but I've placed extra pink tape here. The falls should be reached in 40m or so. If you have pets or younger children... be careful here as you'll be

standing above the last section of the falls. The cache is on the approach side of the creek...so no need to cross unless continuing on to other caches

at Norms' Shack or Ironstone Mountain(part of Devils Gauntlet series).

The cache is a black 200ml sistema with logbook and pencil only.

Enjoy!

Mr T had plans to walk to Ironstone Mountain TP today and set off with Mr T (Triumph Twins) to tackle it.

Made it to the hut but due to rain and poor visibility, that plan had to be abandoned.

Luckily all was not lost as he found this cache along the way. Not a lot of water coming over the falls today. A pleasant spot for a break.

Cache and contents in good condition.

Many thanks Sirius Tas for placing this cache.

Was going to walk further than here, but blindly ended up walking most of the way back to the car on the old track. So I had to double back again towards the falls, lots of nice fungi to take photos of. The falls were flowing well, with plenty of ice, the wire rope has been replaced.

Track was very icy and slippery and you had to be very careful not to slip. The falls crossing was an ice rink and we had to cut away heaps of ice with the ice axe to make it safer to get across. The falls looks spectacular with large frozen area's with water running behind them. The main stream was still flowing. It is just a fantastic winter wonderland here at the moment. Along the higher peaks huge ice flows rain down into the creek over hundreds of meters and many ledges.

Warning: The wire rope in some of the pictures is broken and coiled up in the tree on one side. There is nothing to hang onto when crossing at the moment.

I learnt about glacial hanging valleys 30 years ago in geography and I was amazed to see Western Creek Falls were a classical example of the falls associated with these valleys. The waterfall was reasonably full after the two weeks of virtual constant rain and the crystal clear days that we enjoyed on our walk up to Norms Shack allowed us to enjoy the falls to their best. The lunch break of our trip was organised to occur at these falls and the Eyrettes luxuriated on the warm rocks while the sun beat against them as water tumbled down into Western Creek proper. Of course finding the cache made the break ever so more satisfying and the Eyrettes were so pleased with the find that they left a matchbox car in the container for no swap. A true compliment Sirius!

We followed the recommended path in and found it to be a bit rugged so we were left wondering just how challenging the lower western path would have been. We left a fair bit of tape along the trail especially at the entrance and exits across the rock rivers so that the Eyrettes and other walkers could easily find their way back home.

Crossing the falls along the wire hand guide was the most exhilarating and frightening adventure that LilEyre has had so far in her short life of walking but now after a day rest after the walk she seems to think it was one of the highlights of the trip.

We loved finding these falls and were literally thrilled to cross the falls half up from the bottom. Thanks for placing this cache in an impressive place Sirius.

Started walking at 8.20 with a friend that we introduced to Caching, my main target was Devils Gauntlet E, but she was more than happy to find this cache and Norms Shack. Was a sunny day and a great walk up the gully. Got to the falls and the GPS was consistently pointing to the lower falls, downhill from the track. We made our way down and looked for ages in all sorts of spots that did'nt quite match the clue, had a good clambour all over the place down there before climbing back up to the track and looking for something that matched the clue. LAB found the cache in a spot that once found made perfect sense. On to Norms Shack. Noticed Hookline had been there 3 days before us. A cache in a good spot to break up the walk.
Thanks Sirius.

I had to ponder, when setting out for Ironstone, whether doing this in 30 degree heat was a really sensible idea. My little 2wd Pulsar nearly overheated on the road leading in. Thankfully the point between the engine nearing critical and the start of the track wasn't very far. Didn't dare try driving all the way to the designated carpark but parked in a safe spot just in from the turnoff and walked the 200m or so to the start of the track. Took about three steps up the road with my pack and felt ready to turn it in... but this WAS Ironstone, and potential for a 3rd to find. So somehow we plodded on in the heat.

The little spring on the way was marvellous, we sat and ate lunch and drank cool, clear mountain water. The falls, when we reached them weren't much to look at as they'd dried to a trickling puddle. They tasted good, though. And were easy to cross.

Before heading on we took a dip in the inviting pool at the bottom, but the water was a bit too cold. Freezing water and blowtorch sun, not a great combination.

Somewhere in the blazing heat a cache was found and something scribbled in it. Was encouraged that the last person was March Brown, so we were still on track for 3rd...

first stop on the way up to the plateau. these would be good with a lot of water but very pleasant today. Had a swim in one of the pools up the track a bit. The water is so clear.
Thanks Sirius

Nice easy walk and once again we were fortunate with the weather.......although every now and then it seemed to get a little windy following the boys.
The falls were very pretty and well worth visiting.
Thanks sirius

Great walk - very pretty, some lovely pools along the way that would have been very tempting in summer.
Cache soon in hand, and on to Ironstone.

In the company of 3daygrowth and Red tag we set off up the Western creek track in fine but overcast conditions. This is a beautiful area and its nice to have a reason to return once again. Reached the waterfall and the cache was soon in hand, logged and returned to is place. Off then to Norms hut. A top area to visit so thanks Sirius for your efforts.
