Description

John Henry Davies Grave

We drove along and saw the sign 'John Henry Davies Grave' so we stopped and had a look at the grave and found fa few others beside him too, not sure if they are related because they were different surnames. Anyway he died at only 24 yrs old at a homestead across the road (see the attached photos) so...... Cachers need to go to the cemetry first to jot down the date of his death then go to the homestead and look for the stove.

 GalleryGallery

The cache is inside the stove ensure a photo is taken of the yourselves, gps and stove unless you are travelling alone then a photo or yourself is not necessary.   I would like an email with date of death first before logging your photo.

Good luck everyone :)

What a fine home JD must have had back in the day. If only he knew what the SA Government might have paid him for his land back then, he might have tried to stick around a bit longer.

The stove was an easy find, and is still in relatively good condition. To think of the meals cooked on this range all those years ago.

Logged with owner approval.

Thanks sevabo.

I visited the cemetery and saw the grave, then crossed the road, found the GC cache and then photographed the stove. I am travelling alone, so my fingers on the GPS will have to do. Answer sent by GC message. TFTC sevabo.

Love old historic sites. Answer sent to the CO. If it wasn't for geocaching we would never have visited the site. Thanks for taking us there.

After a day of caching in and around Whyalla, it was time to head further north for our next stop at Glendambo with a detour into Woomera, Roxby Downs and Olympic Dam. After a caching tour of Woomera, we were now headed to Roxby Downs for more of the same when we stopped off to visit John Henry Davies the crossed the road to check out the stove for this cache. On a cache tour around Woomera and this interesting bit of history was next. This would have been a great house in it's day, certainly wouldn't have been cold with those fireplaces.

I dropped by here at 17:05 while on the way along the track to the trig point out yonder. This was the second time I've been to this location but unfortunately, I lost the camera with all the shots on it last time. Crying or Very sad At least this time, they were on my phone so all was good. Smile

An interesting spot that helps appreciate the harshness of those long ago times.

Thanks sevabo.

We're constantly amazed at the number of ruins still standing in outback SA. Something we never see in our home state, unless they've been preserved that is & usually collecting $$ at the door. TFTV Sevabo.

Great spot that we had passed on the way up to Roxby Downs. Good to have a poke around. Noticed a dingo approaching the ruins quite closely but unfortunately it spotted us and took off. Also watched a wedge tailed eagle that was close by. Thanks.

Found on the way home after a couple of rather warm days in Roxby. It must have been very lonely and desolate out here in the 1880's, with no near facilities of any kind.
Found some flowers growing in the creek behind the house, small daisies and sunflowers.

Saw the sign on the way out to another cache and decided to pick this one up on the way back to Woomera. Located the grave, obtained the required information and then wandered over to the homestead and located the stove to take the attached photo.
