Description
Do a bit of community service for your country!
Trove is the online database of newspapers and links to books, journals, photographs and more, provided by the National Library of Australia.
Trove includes newspapers published in each state and territory from the 1800s to the mid-1950s, as well as a number of newspapers published after 1955, where an agreement has been reached with the publisher. These scans have been converted into text for easier searching and legability. The problem is that when computers try to read poor scans or dodgy newspapers, they make understandable mistakes. So Trove allows for human interaction to fix some of those errors.
This cache is about turning you into a Trove editor. It's a great project to dip in and out of and you'll know you're doing your bit of community service for those that follow you in years to come.
To log this cache, you will need to
- provide a screen shot of your Trove editing stats that show you've made 100 edits within a calendar month (from publishing date onwards)
- share a link to the most interesting/unusual/your favourite article you've edited
If you're on a roll, keep going and show us your numbers!
How to use and edit on Trove
- Visit Trove and create an account (using your geocaching name is kinda fun).
- Search for an article to read and/or edit. My suggestions are:
- Start with the Digitised Newspapers category
- Perhaps look for your suburb or town
- Filter by years to get a real historic view
- Search for your own birth date
- Maybe look for a newspaper that is 100+ years old
- Click on an article and you'll see the converted text on the left and the original document on the right
- Found some errors? Consult with the Text Correction Guidelines on how to make edits and GO FOR IT!
- Common errors that need fixing are numbers, "l" instead of "i", 0/O, b/h, o/e, etc.
- Lots of added or omitted punctuation
- For each "line" you update, that is considered one "edit"
- Don't forget to hit Save & Exit once you're done
Once you've made your edits
ziggiau's Trove edits
- View your User Profile and click on the Text Corrections tab
- Here you'll see your stats by month on the left and your Hall o' fame ranking on the right
- Take a screen shot of this page and include it in your log
- The bottom of the page shows a summary of all the edits you've made.
To share a link to an article
- Right click (or Mac equivilant) on the last words in the breadcrumb trail and copy the link address.
- Paste this into your log.
The more you dig, the further you'll fall down the rabbit hole. And who knows, it might lead you to find some interesting pieces of information that you could use for your next cache hide.
Happy editing!

Armchair style Locationless caches where the finder is not required to explore the real world, identify a location and accompany the "Find" with photographic evidence are no longer accepted.
A Locationless cache listing must require the finder to locate an object or perform a task in the real world, collect the co-ordinates and log the find with accompanying photographic evidence.
The geocaching community would like to thank you for listing this Locationess geocache and congratulations to all that found this locationless geocache.
As the geocache no longer meets the requirements we will archive the cache listing.
Great for chasing family history info.
Amazing what you find out.
I've edited a few pages here and there no many as yourself!
Just under 900 for me.

Last month I spent my time on Trove editing articles about Cathedrals in my home town of Wagga. I found it fascinating! Thanks for the new experience and the chance to help out. Thanks for the cache!
When exploring Trove for family history I enjoy stumbling across articles about balls and celebrations that my grandmother attended.
Over the years I have found many interesting articles including those involving family sadness.
Late one night my son (who also loves correcting on Trove) came to me and asked if I knew about the MURDER in the family. I knew of the married woman who had died in 1886 and had always presumed that she had died in childbirth. My son had found a newspaper article which detailed her death, at the hands of her husband, in central Melbourne. Newspaper reports at that time went onto great detail.
Another 'interesting' but sad story involves the father of the above mentioned woman. In 1874, while in a drunken state he tried to commit suicide by cutting his arm. This event was mentioned in many country and interstate newspapers at the time. A link to the article is https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/60992341?
I haven't been doing much editing while at home but have been doing plenty of family history research.
Thank you ziggiau for this fun cache.
We researched one of the family names and found a few more articles that required editing so we corrected a few and have added a photo.
