I have always enjoyed visiting cemeteries.
This is my local historical cemetery. 6 years years ago my daughter and I visited and took photos of all the headstones to upload to Billiongraves. It's a site that enables transcription of the headstones so that people can search their ancestry online.

Keilor Cemetery.
"Keilor Cemetery has been serving its diverse, multicultural community’s evolving needs for more than 150 years. Its pioneer graves reflecting the history of its location on the road to the goldfields. Keilor Cemetery is also home to a Gallipoli Oak tree grown from acorns brought back from the battlefields of World War 1. It is an important community monument to those who lost their lives in that conflict. In 2017, GMCT began the release of 5065 new graves in the Ely Court extension. This will help to serve the needs of the local community into the future. With a new extension planned for the existing mausoleum, the Gallery of the Saints, various burial and cremation memorial options, and an on-site florist, Keilor Cemetery is one of our most active community cemeteries."

Having woken early on Anzac Day I decided to go for a walk seeking old locationless caches and Sighter sites. Seemed to be a bit of a theme going.
I started out parking at the mural 'Past Present Future'. "Created by Melbourne-based artist, Adnate, this landmark work pays tribute to a woman who first drew public attention in defence of other Aboriginal people in the 1920s. Pearl Gibbs only stepped away from her activist platform with her death in 1983. She knew and worked with almost every major Aboriginal activist in 20th-century Australia." - boomdubbo
I then went around to the fairly new statue of William Ferguson. "From 1936, when parliament amended the Aborigines Protection Act 1909 to increase its powers to govern Aboriginal people's lives, he began speaking and lobbying for civil rights. He launched the Aborigines Progressive Association (APA) at Dubbo in 1937 and was a witness before the Legislative Assembly's select committee on the administration of the Aborigines Protection Act (which failed to initiate any reform). With William Cooper and John Patten, he organised a Day of Mourning for Aboriginal people on Australia Day 1938." - wikipedia
Having worked on filming a couple of interviews with key players in finding this statue (Riverbank Frank and Paul Rowe) I knew where Bill's grave was. So I went up to see it. It had a new headstone plaque as well as an additional information one. It's good to see the guys finally got what they were working toward, both the guys I was working with and Bill.
Whilst there I recalled a headstone that caught my interest whilst cacheing there, so I wandered over and found it again... just. It was covered in leaf litter. Good thing I could remember it's general appearance and location. It was a simple headstone laying on the ground. The grave is surrounded by built up ones. The inscription was something I hadn't read before either. It was a book with rope and tassel bookmark. On it reads "In loving memory of my only sister, with a brothers love". When I first saw it, it seemed so lonely and sad. I felt for the brother. It seemed he had lost all he had.
On my way back to the car I also found a headstone decoration I have not come across before. A huge crown hanging on a cross. It was HUGE and jewelled.
Attached are photos of my days adventures including a selfie from outside the cemetery.

We were brought to this unusual cemetery via a geocache nearby.
The cemetery was a private one for those who died on the Serpentine Station property.
Twelve people are buried here, half of them young children,
It is a reminder of how harsh life was for our pioneering families.

Whilst we were out Geocaching we discovered this old marker at the first Rushworth Cemetery. There is nothing here otherwise to show that it is a burial place, no grave markers or tombstones to be seen. Some of my dad's ancestors were buried here, while mum’s were buried at the nearby Whroo cemetery which has been well kept and all graves marked.

Penguin General Cemetery
The first burial was in 1865 and the cemetery closed in 1997, it was heritage listed in 2007. There were over 1800 burials here and I managed to find the headstones for three of my great grandparents.
There have been a couple of music evenings held in the cemetery, "Music Among The Tombstones: Penguin's twilight celebration of the dead". The events were funded by the Australian government's Better Access to Palliative Care across Tasmania program, through the Tasmanian Association for Hospice and Palliative Care Networking End of Life Care project. One of the music sites in the cemetery was the memorial garden dedicated to almost 80 unnamed children and babies buried there, with the concert finishing with the release of 24 butterflies in their honour.

The Whroo Cemetery near Rushworth, in the old goldfields
It has recently been given a facelift by some wonderful volunteers who are repairing gravestones and have made a huge plaque naming all the people who were buried here in unmarked graves.
Instead of me in the photo I have taken one of my 101 year old Mother standing by her grandfather's grave.
It has a famous inscription on the stone:
"Remember me as you pass by
As you are now, so once was I.
As I am now so you will be,
Prepare yourself to follow me".
I believe it is from a tombstone in Ireland which had the added verse:
"To follow you
I'm not content
Until I know
Which way you went"

Paris may be a strange place to find a pelican, but I found one years ago adorning a grave in the well known Pere Lachaise cemetery, from memory it was the finish point of quite a long multi (all virtual waypoints) that took me 2 evenings to complete. Saint Saviour's Cemetery, Punchbowl, has the first recorded burial as Catherine Elizabeth Pearson (age 36 years) on 19th February, 1878. Although plots can no longer be purchased in the cemetery, people with existing rights can arrange for relatives to be interred here. One of only three remaining cemeteries in the Canterbury area.
Nanango is the 4th oldest town in Queensland and consequently has a number of quite early graves. Prior to gazettal of the Nanango Cemetery Reserve this older cemetery on the Nanango Gold Field was used (1862-1876). The Cemetery known as the Burnett Cemetery is also known local as the Nanango Pioneer Cemetery. The Cemetery was closed to burials in 1876 and a new cemetery was established approximately 2 kilometres to the west on the brow of a hill. The majority here were later exhumed and transferred to the Nanango Cemetery. Many of the graves are not marked. Surprisingly the cemetery was initially established to bury those unfortunate passengers who passed whilst on the cobb and co coach on the way from Ipswich to Gayndah or at the staging post, Goodes inn approximately 200 meters to the south.

St David's Park is located on the site of St David's cemetery. St David's Park is a formal English style walled park and dates from the beginning of European settlement in 1804. This was the site of the first burial ground in Tasmania, marked out by Lieutenant-Governor David Collins and the Reverend Robert Knopwood in April 1804. At that time the burial ground was 'a place of real seclusion and rare beauty' crossed by two crystal streams with fine old blackwood trees dotted through the groves of wattle on the high ground, located away from the main settlement and surrounded by an 'exquisite natural shrubbery'. It was called St David's Cemetery as a mark of respect to the memory of the Colony's founding Lt Governor, Lt Col David Collins. Collins himself was buried there in March 1810.
About a year afterwards the first church in Tasmania was built on the spot, with its altar directly above his grave. The opening of the Cornelian Bay cemetery in 1872 allowed St Davids and all the other burial grounds within the city to be closed.
A register compiled at the time shows that at least 900 people were once buried under the lush green turf of St David's Park. Some were reburied at Cornelian Bay, most were allowed to sleep on under the now carefully-tended gardens and lawns. Now only a few of the more important memorials remain - including David Collins, first Lieutenant Governor, interred in a casket of Huon pine.
A stroll around the park's wall of headstones gives a poignant picture of life and death in the colony's early days as there are many headstones for children from those days when children s life expectancy was not very high. There are also memorials to those settlers who came from Norfolk Island to become part of the new settlement in 1807.

This is the cemetery attached to the Tallebudgera Uniting church, originally the Tallebudgera Presbyterian church. The church was built in 1888 and while land next door was set aside for a cemetery, the oldest recorded grave is 1915. Wandering the grounds its easy to see names of the pioneers of the area - Andrews, Ruddy, Schuster, etc. Names that now live on as street and park names in the area.
According to the church's website, the cemetery is still accepting burials - assuming you have a booking. However, it does have a rose garden with memorial wall which ashes can be interred if requested.
Its a lovely old well kept 'country' cemetery, even if Tallebudgera is more a suburb now.
Thanks for the locationless.

This is the old Catholic Cemetery at Tallebudgera, but used to be the site of St Malachys Catholic Church. I know this because Suzy and Pete have a cache here for geocaching.com.
Its a very old cemetery, the church which used to be here was built in 1878 and was the first Catholic church south of Beenleigh. As a cemetery, its still in use but I think you have to have some connection with Tallebudgera and the pioneering families.
To prove that we were there. I am including a photo of William Dolan's headstone, he was one of the pioneers of Tallebudgera and his wife Margaret was instrumental in raising funds to build the church. I also have a photo of the cemetery in general. You can see some of the newer graves. We found two from 2016.

I also have a photo of the cemetery in general. You can see some of the newer graves. We found two from 2016.
Thank you for this locationless.
This is the lovely Maffra Cemetery's memorial gates; a cemetery on the outskirts of town as usual in the country. It was quite busy when I arrived so I decided not to intrude on the mourners. TFTC stringy
gathered for the 2017/18 scavenge hunt. Whilst at Australia'a old operating church I took my happy snap of this cemetery beside the church. A lot of history associated with this cemetery containing early settlers of Australia

This is the large Shepparton Cemetery gateway. There are some very historical graves here and some very large vaults, and mausoleums. It is situated on a hill in Rudd Road, not far from the Goulburn River.
Shepparton Cemetery has a computer index near the toilet block which is accessible to the general public. It lists name, ages of deceased and their burial plot row and number, and religious section.
There is also a free online service where you can obtain photos of headstones.
I take my photos with my iPad which is also my GPS, so unfortunately cannot include that in photo.
Thankyou for the opportunity to log this Locationless, and also as part of the State of the Nation Competition.

Dromana cemetery. Creepy place with a lot of stories associated with it. Not a fun place in the dark of the night.

This is the old Evandale cemetery, in Pioneer Park, behind the memorial hall. I have heard that it might still be possible to buy a plot here, but have not checked this out.

Although I've spent my fair share of time in cemeteries (usually caching) I've never really taken notice of the various facets of a cemetery.
That all changed recently when I was asked to join the Cemetery Trust for Echuca Cemetery. Now I'm much more aware of the complexities of running a cemetery and many considerations that must be given for almost any activities undertaken within the grounds of the cemetery.
I specifically logged this find for the States of the Nation game. Go Victoria.
Thanks Stringy

I've been meaning to drop in to this cemetery for a few weeks to look for a GC multi but haven't been motivated. The States of the nation game motivated me to stop this afternoon on a late afternoon supermarket run. This is the Sorell Henry Street Anglican Cemetery. Thanks for the opportunity to log this cache.
Sought this cemetery out for the 2017-18 States of The Nation Game.
It's a grand old place, with plenty of graves placed in the 1800's as well as much newer interments.
The coordinates given are for the spot I took the photo of myself with the cemetery, not with the sign.

Dropped in to Tarago Cemetery today to collect a GC multi on my way through to Goulburn on a caching run. Grabbed a snap from the front gate and it seems to qualify for this cache! TFTC stringy
