Find an Orchid and write something about it in your log and attach an image to your log as well. One you have in your yard or from the internet, it does not matter.

Was visiting my mother in her nursing home yesterday when she asked me to throw out her latest bunch of flowers as they were starting to look a bit sad.
There were a couple of orchids in the arrangement so I grabbed a photo of them before tossing them. They survived much better than the rest of the flowers.
Don't know what kind they are but once I get the photo from my phone on to the laptop I may be able to tell you.
Every year for Mother's Day and her birthday my brother, sister and I throw in some money and the local florist sends her a bunch of fresh flowers every month. What else do you get someone at that stage of their lives? And she always appreciates getting them.
Thanks.
I googled the purple orchids and they came up as moth orchids - whether this is right I don't know.

I’ve no idea what type of orchid this is other than Muggle Hubby inherited it from his Mum and he has been growing them ever since in various shades and sizes.
Thanks for this one youngoldfella as I still catch up on those missed whilst on holidays,

Cymbidium Orchids are one of our favorite orchids with many other varieties as well.
Commonly known as "boat orchids," cymbidium orchids have smaller flowers compared to other orchid varieties, but can produce up to 30 blooms per spike. They can be grown in a garden or as an indoor houseplant and prefer warmer temperatures during the day and cooler temperatures at night.

I have chosen the Dancing Lady Orchid for National Orchard Day. This orchid flowered prolifically at a childhood home attached to a lemon scented tea tree. The flowers danced in the breeze and were very attractive.
The Veined Oncidium (O. varicosum) are medium-sized epiphytic orchids that reach a height of 19 to 38 cm. The leaves grow up to 23 cm long. The non fragrant flowers are yellow with bright red and brown stripes.

Phalaenopsis, commonly known as moth orchids,is a genus of about seventy species of plants in the family Orchidaceae. Orchids in this genus are monopodial epiphytes or lithophytes with long, coarse roots, short, leafy stems and long-lasting, flat flowers arranged in a flowering stem that often branches near the end.

Thanks YoungOldFella for this special day.
We have a small collection of Cymbidium Orchids in our yard collected from uncles and aunties over the years. We currently have pink and yellow flowering forms and they have a nice display each year.
Considering we are complete novices with orchid growing we are pretty happy with the annual display.
The image we have added is of some young bulbs transplanted last year, it will be a few years before flowering for this pot but the are looking healthy at the moment on the shaded side of the house.

I have chosen the following as I love the colours. They say that it needs more care than other orchids but I have found that they grow very well outside in shade and left to their own devices.
Oncidium orchids, also commonly known as "Dancing Lady" orchids, are known for their vibrant colors and uniquely shaped flowers. This makes them very popular with orchid enthusiasts. However, they are more particular about care than many other types of orchid.

Thanks for the interesting puzzle today.
My orchoid is Cowslip (Caledenia flava).
Caledenias are the ‘spider’ orchid family and the largest group of WA orchids with their bright yellow colouring.
They are common, have a wide distribution and long flowering period. If you go for a bushwalk pretty much anywhere in SW WA in spring, these are the orchid you will most likely spot.

Not knowing any thing about orchids I was in an orchid reserve in WA when another couple showed me what to look for. The first orchid they showed me was a
DONKEY ORCHID
The name Diuris, meaning double-tail, refers to the hanging lateral sepals, however, the orchids are more readily recognised by their ear-like petals which lead to the common name of Donkey Orchid. All species have grass-like leaves and most have predominantly yellow flowers with red, brown or purple markings.

Phalaenopsis
Phalaenopsis are the most common orchids in the marketplace and are commonly known as “moth orchids.” They usually have wide, flat, dark leaves that are arranged opposite each other. They carry long tall stems of wide flat flowers that can last up to three or more months.

Hi YOF
The jewel-like fairy slipper, also known as calypso orchid or calypso bulbosa in Latin, is one of more than 40 native orchids found in the state of Washington, and at least seven species that can be found on the Quimper Peninsula.
Each fairy slipper flower is solitary on a short stem emerging from a single broad basal leaf. The name calypso refers to the lid or hood (from the Greek word kalyptra, meaning covering or veil) that protects the reproductive parts of the flower. Like many terrestrial orchids, the fairy slipper has a bulbous root, inspiring its species name, bulbosa. They are sometimes called Venus’ slipper after the Greek goddess of love and beauty.
