Description

Camp XIV. (On the Plains.) Wednesday,  5/9/1860.

Eighteen miles further brought the expedition to a camping spot between Lake Tutchewop and Lake Boga, beside a clump of trees left untouched for over a century afterwards. This was quite close to Lake Boga.
Becker's journal entry appears to be the only primary written reference to camp 14 on the Burke and Wills trail.

Just south of Swan Hill, the Victorian Exploring Expedition had already been on the road for over two weeks. Men and animals were tired and dispirited, with poor weather and equipment failure exacerbating their woes. Things did finally seem to be turning around, however, as expedition naturalist Ludwig Becker shows in his diary:

"My camp-watch was again from 3 to 5 in the morning during which time the horizon all round, in intervals of a few seconds, was illuminated by sheet lightning of a circular form, each occupying only a few degrees of space. The display finished with a thundercloud passing over our heads, when day broke. We marched at 8¼ a.m. The day was very bright and soon saw us at Lake Boga. This is a fine sheet of water and reminds one of Hobsons Bay looking from St. Kilda towards Williamstown and Sandridge, but without the mountain ranges in the distance. I dismounted and went along the sandy shore of the lake collecting some shells."

They arrived at Swan Hill the next day, where they rested for a few days before pressing on into New South Wales.

The Swan Hill Guardian (16/02/1996) noted that locals had long known this area as the Burke and Wills Clump. While the authenticity of this location cannot be proven conclusively, there is a strong community attachment to it as a place of great importance.

The envelopment of the site in an almost legendary aspect of Australia's past is an important element of the region's history. The term "Burke and Wills Clump" refers to a clump of native box trees growing beside the Murray Valley Highway 4 km south of the Township of Lake Boga.

Originally the trees were numerous, but regular flooding in the immediate vicinity and inadvertent land clearance have resulted in a reduction in the number of trees to 8, with two dead stumps.

The wider area, which served as a campsite for such a large band of travellers and their livestock, could potentially contain evidence of the expedition's presence. Widespread flooding in the area may have irreversibly disturbed or removed any archaeological deposits, although no formal archaeological assessment of the site has occurred.

The area has, since the early 1990s, been curated and cared for by local community members, who formed the "Burke and Wills Clump Project Sub-committee". The Sub-committee has been involved in maintaining the trees, revegetating the area and creating an interpretive roadside stop with a commemorative cairn and brass plaque.

It took a bit of searching to find this one but we located it eventually, and in good condition. Loved the sign here

05-Sep-22
Today's route was planned to come this way so I could log a find in a different LGA and Dragonzone. The object of my attention was the CORS in Kerang, but then noticed this B & W cache and I love the symbol as much as the history connected to these caches.
TFTC it was found easily enough and in good condition considering all the rain we have experienced this year. SL. ClappingClappingClan CerberusClan Cerberus

Out and about on the way home from Mildura via Swan Hill chasing a few caches enroute to Ararat and I took the opportunity to grab a few Waymarks and GCAs along the way. Dancing

TNLNSL. Thanks The Morris.

Well, I cannot work out why I've never logged this cache. I remember the first visit was during a trip to Swan Hill to sample the new Thai restaurant a few years ago and I've driven past many times since then. Today I stopped for another look and everything is still the same although the container is looking decidedly "older".
Although I'm sure I submitted a log all those years ago I'll submit one again.

#GA1080 - 17:30; Day 1 of the Melbourne Mega Mission with Sol de lune and taking the scenic route from Canberra to Anglesea via Balranald so we can collect a few GCA caches on the way. We had now crossed into Victoria and passed through Swan Hill enroute to base camp in Kerang for the night. Another interesting part of the story to be gleaned here, that despite the relatively flat terrain, the weather had not been kind to the expedition to this point. Not sure what impact that would have had on the mozzies, which had been out in force along our route today. TFTC The Morris Very HappyClan Cerberus

On the way to the Surf Coast Mega with LuckyL10n and we came the long way to grab a few GCA caches....

Next stop as we headed to Kerang for the night. Reading the account of the night spent here as written in the cache description, it's a pity more of the trees haven't/didn't survive longer. Another area where it was interesting to try and imagine what it might have been like on the days B&W and their party were in area. CoolCool

Thanks for another one in the series The Morris.....

26-Dec-14

Well, it was summer holiday time and time for a road trip. Both my Housemate Obi-Cal and I had no commitments for the next three days, so it was decided a bit of a drive was in order. I was keen to find some caches in certain locations for both Victoria Country Road Atlas Challenge (GCY98X) and also the newly published Victorian LGA Polygon Challenge (GC5DFFR) and Obi-Cal wanted to gain some more points in another location based game he is passionate about.

On our way up towards Ouyen now via Swan Hill, stopping at a few random caches along the way. This was a very spur of the moment stop and glad we did... sort of. Interesting history here, but while searching for the cache, I nearly split my head open on a low branch. The things we do to find a cache.

Thanks to the Morris for hiding this cache. Clan Phoenix

First easy find here but I sat the cache in the car and all these bugs jumped off and started hiding under the dash! I hope I got them all - there were hundreds!
TNLN, thanks for the cache!

We aim to find many of the B&W caches as we were involved in the placement of some up at Innminka and surrounds. A good bit of Australian history. Thanks for the hide.

When we travel we always seek out caches in the Burke and Wills series as they give us a greater level of appreciation of their journey and the importance of their exploration. Accurate coordinates led to a quick find. The cache and it's contents were in good condition. After replacing the cache, we took some time to read the information on the plaque and on a board prepared by a local history group. Some more pieces of the jigsaw were in place for us now. TFTC.

Found in transit back from a niece’s 21 st. birthday bash at Swan Hill.
Love this B&W Series.
Such an amazing and ultimately fatal feat of heroics and endurance.
Locations like this are 'the icing on the cake' of Geocaching with the locals hosting us anonymously to their favourite spots.

Found on the way from Adelaide to Sydney for a work trip. This is our 2nd B&W cache, and a nice drive-by too. Scared a few rabbits and myself while looking for the cache.

Day 354 of non-stop caching.

17-Jun-11
As I do quite of lot of driving for my work, I make a habit of stopping at historical markers to just to break up my trips. I saw this one and of course pulled over to have a look. While walking to the sign I whipped out my phone (AKA the GPS), opened the Geocaching.com app and was somewhat surprised to see there were no caches in the area. Alas, I still read the signs and imagined what it would have been like tramping through here all those years ago.

Whilst wandering back I decided I may as well answer nature's call and wandered over to what looked to be a suitable tree. I was just about to start when I looked down and noticed an unusual, yet instantly recognisable pile of camouflage. Sure enough, I had just experienced my first ever 'stumbled upon' cache.

Obviously didn't have swaps with me, by still signed the log.... and wee-lieved myself a little further away.

Sorry it's taken a while to log this. We don't jump on this Aussie website as much recently now that we can paperless cache.

Not much of a clump of trees, but then with the removal of most of the others along the road, maybe it deserves the name.
Read the board and rock, then found the cache.
Thanks, Robmc.

Found 11.30am
Managed to get the car far enough off the side of the road and walk over to where the GPSr was pointing. Lots of long grass made it interesting to get to the cache area but once there we well hidden cache was found.

Thanks The Morris for al lthe B&W caches that you have placed out this way.

Stopped by the side of the Murray Valley Hwy at 5:45pm and wandered over to the information board, located strangely too far from the road for most to even notice. We were pleased to find the stone marker also well hidden amongst the bushes here. The cache was quickly found in a safe location. Thanks to The Morris for including this campsite on the B&W trail - we enjoyed the stop here. Cheers!

On our annual pilgrimage to the Snow - an opportunity to grab some new caches.

Good to read about the history of this trip - hope to do them all some time. Interesting that the road sign is 100m down the road pointing to nowhere. TFTC. Very Happy
