Becker's journal entry appears to be the only primary written reference to camp 14 on the Burke and Wills trail.
Just south of Swan Hill, the Victorian Exploring Expedition had already been on the road for over two weeks. Men and animals were tired and dispirited, with poor weather and equipment failure exacerbating their woes. Things did finally seem to be turning around, however, as expedition naturalist Ludwig Becker shows in his diary:
They arrived at Swan Hill the next day, where they rested for a few days before pressing on into
The Swan Hill Guardian (

Originally the trees were numerous, but regular flooding in the immediate vicinity and inadvertent land clearance have resulted in a reduction in the number of trees to 8, with two dead stumps.
The wider area, which served as a campsite for such a large band of travellers and their livestock, could potentially contain evidence of the expedition's presence. Widespread flooding in the area may have irreversibly disturbed or removed any archaeological deposits, although no formal archaeological assessment of the site has occurred.
The area has, since the early 1990s, been curated and cared for by local community members, who formed the "Burke and Wills Clump Project Sub-committee". The Sub-committee has been involved in maintaining the trees, revegetating the area and creating an interpretive roadside stop with a commemorative cairn and brass plaque.
Logs
TFTC it was found easily enough and in good condition considering all the rain we have experienced this year. SL.
Apologies for the rather late log but finally managed to track down my photos through my MANY external hard drives.
Thanks for the cache WazzaAndWenches
TNLNSL. Thanks The Morris.
Although I'm sure I submitted a log all those years ago I'll submit one again.
Cheers and thanks for the hunt The Morris

Little Squirell
Next stop as we headed to Kerang for the night. Reading the account of the night spent here as written in the cache description, it's a pity more of the trees haven't/didn't survive longer. Another area where it was interesting to try and imagine what it might have been like on the days B&W and their party were in area.
Thanks for another one in the series The Morris.....

Well, it was summer holiday time and time for a road trip. Both my Housemate Obi-Cal and I had no commitments for the next three days, so it was decided a bit of a drive was in order. I was keen to find some caches in certain locations for both Victoria Country Road Atlas Challenge (GCY98X) and also the newly published Victorian LGA Polygon Challenge (GC5DFFR) and Obi-Cal wanted to gain some more points in another location based game he is passionate about.
On our way up towards Ouyen now via Swan Hill, stopping at a few random caches along the way. This was a very spur of the moment stop and glad we did... sort of. Interesting history here, but while searching for the cache, I nearly split my head open on a low branch. The things we do to find a cache.
Thanks to the Morris for hiding this cache.
TNLN, thanks for the cache!
Thanks, The Morris!
A quick grab here today.

Love this B&W Series.
Such an amazing and ultimately fatal feat of heroics and endurance.
Locations like this are 'the icing on the cake' of Geocaching with the locals hosting us anonymously to their favourite spots.
TNLN
Our thanks to The Morris for the cache and bringing us to this location.
Cheers

Cache condition – fine.
Day 354 of non-stop caching.
Whilst wandering back I decided I may as well answer nature's call and wandered over to what looked to be a suitable tree. I was just about to start when I looked down and noticed an unusual, yet instantly recognisable pile of camouflage. Sure enough, I had just experienced my first ever 'stumbled upon' cache.
Obviously didn't have swaps with me, by still signed the log.... and wee-lieved myself a little further away.
Sorry it's taken a while to log this. We don't jump on this Aussie website as much recently now that we can paperless cache.
Read the board and rock, then found the cache.
Thanks, Robmc.
BTW be careful of the ants that have invaded the hide area
Lots of prickles.

Managed to get the car far enough off the side of the road and walk over to where the GPSr was pointing. Lots of long grass made it interesting to get to the cache area but once there we well hidden cache was found.

Thanks The Morris for al lthe B&W caches that you have placed out this way.
Good to read about the history of this trip - hope to do them all some time. Interesting that the road sign is 100m down the road pointing to nowhere. TFTC.
Found by Roma and Max.
Another top Morris cache commemorating this significant occasion.
Well done and thanks.
