Description

This is a special Burke & Wills cache listed on Geocaching Australia.

This cache requires you to visit a Burke & Wills historical location and take a photo as described along with your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in the picture. Once you have logged this cache as a find, you are required to load your picture to your log to validate your find.

Validating Your Log
Take a picture of your GPS receiver showing the same co-ordinates as the cache page (plus or minus 100 meters) and attach it to your online log.

Important Information
The Burke Wills Historical Society notes: "The actual route Burke and Wills followed once they left Camp 78 is unknown and one of the most intensely debated issues. Wills' map and some of his journals containing astronomical observations have been lost. Because the journals have never been transcribed, it means the expedition's track north of the Diamantina, through the gibber rises, confused sand dunes and extensive claypans, is a matter for conjecture."
Travel in Outback Australia can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take. Be aware of private property restrictions. Do not risk your life to log this geocache.

About This Location
Passing the village of Lancefield over the Great Dividing Range now called the Burke and Wills Track, the party halted for day of rest at Mia Mia, and Burke hired a new cook. Sightseers from Heathcote and Bendigo, who were well aware of the expedition and its ambitions, came out to see the camels.

"We are now at the Mia-Mia," Wills wrote his father, "lying between McIvor and Castlemaine (a roadside public-house). We are all right enough, except as regards cleanliness, and everything has gone well, barring the necessary breakdowns and wet weather."

As close as we could get to the coordinates and we were only one off on the east.
Made sure to put the signs in the background as the numbers are hard to read on the ETrek due to reflection.
Thanks.

This was one of those caches I was pleased I had time for, with us only having one of the B&W caches in tassie I was glad we had time to stop on the way back to the airport today to grab this one.

thanks for the cache.

A lovely day to be out and about in this autumnal weather. The bush around here is very dry at the end of the long hot dry summer. One can only wonder what it would have been like to travel through here back then when Burke and Wills and their entourage, travelled along unmade tracks, with their camels.
So much easier for us in modern vehicles with air conditioning and full protection from the elements.
It is lovely to see their trek has been recognised with this track named in their honour.
The photo is taken with my iPad which is also my GPS.
Thanks for introducing us to more of the history and geography of our wonderful countryside via this Locationless

Back out staggering around on the roadside trying to get a fix on GZ. This time we were both out looking like a pair of drunks. We could only get to a metre before it counted up again. Thanks for another B&W cache

School holidays meant arranging a break for the better half, so zombeefish was collected from the in-laws' after a nice dinner and we began our caching adventures from there.

As I hadn't yet visited the Burke and Wills sites on the back road (the aptly named Burke and Wills Track) through Lancefield and Mia Mia, this seemed the perfect opportunity to cover that part of the route...

... and so, here we were at the last of those before getting back on track for the banks of the Murray.

Day 2 on the way to the Surf Coast Mega with LuckyL10n. We decided on the long way round to grab a few GCA caches....

A bit further south now and we soon arrived at the GZ. LL had already been around this area so it was just a photo for me and all was good. Stood almost in the middle of the road to grab a couple of photos.

Thanks again for the B&W series....

#GA1019 - 11:10; I decided to make use of a spare day in Victoria with the geoteen to head north from Melbourne along the path taken by Burke and Wills (and others) to collect some more of the caches in this series. The plan was to reach Bendigo, then head on to Elmore before heading back to the big smoke. I'd collected my first for the day at Queens Park in Moonee Ponds, which had proved a bit of a nemesis cache for me until today. I'd collected a few more in the series at Bolinda Creek, Lancefield and Baynton on my way through to Mia Mia and this cache and the nearby B&W traditional. Managed to get close to the posted coords and grabbed a snap or two for posterity. TFTC Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

It has been a while sinc we have looked for some Burke and Wills caches. Today we would hunt for a few. We managed to meet the requirements for logging the find. The photo added to the Gallery shows two GPS units: one shows that we were 0.76m from the published coordinates; the other shows the coordinates where we were standing - the same as the published coordinates. The second of the 2 Mia Mia B&W caches for me today while on the way to our bushwalk. Another fascinating instalment in this engrossing and informative series. I couldn't help wondering as I took the pickies if this were the very place they camped on their way north.

Took pickie, LN. Thanks Geocaching Australia.

Off the Melbourne to the model train show at Caulfield to see some of my suppliers and wangle a couple of deals.
Although this area was not along the most direct path to the show we still managed to make a bit of time for a detour.

07-Aug-11
A quick grab on a non-caching trip to Ballarat to visit some friends with Just a cacher.

Day 3 and the rain continues - only the caching made for a bright spot today. We decided to grab a few B&W caches while in the area.

Thanks for the cache Geocaching Australia and the excellent series

Pulled up at GZ at 11:10am for a quick photo as we headed north. There was a roo carcass right at GZ, which was a bit on the nose this morning, so we didn't hang around. Cheers!

Found by Roma and Max.
Having planned our days searching further north and in our enthusiasm continued on down here with co-ordinates only and no knowledge of what we were looking for we had to resort to phone a friend to put is back on track. Thank you Keith.
We are thoroughly enjoying this series.

*FTF* @ 1:00 pm.

The seventh cache of my GCA B&W FTF run.

There was plenty of water flowing under the bridge today as I stopped to take a photo. I wonder how the expedition crossed the creek. Was there a ford nearby?

Thanks for all the work that went into these well prepared caches and thanks for bringing me to this historic spot.
