Description
This is a special Burke & Wills cache listed on Geocaching Australia.
This cache requires you to visit a Burke & Wills historical location and take a photo as described along with your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in the picture. Once you have logged this cache as a find, you are required to load your picture to your log to validate your find.
Validating Your Log
Take a picture of your GPS receiver showing the same co-ordinates as the cache page (plus or minus 100 meters) and attach it to your online log.
Important Information
The Burke Wills Historical Society notes: "The actual route Burke and Wills followed once they left Camp 78 is unknown and one of the most intensely debated issues. Wills' map and some of his journals containing astronomical observations have been lost. Because the journals have never been transcribed, it means the expedition's track north of the Diamantina, through the gibber rises, confused sand dunes and extensive claypans, is a matter for conjecture."
Travel in Outback Australia can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take. Be aware of private property restrictions. Do not risk your life to log this geocache.
About This Location
The expedition left Swan Hill after being feted like heroes, and arrived here on September 17. Its leaders had by now recognised the wisdom in proceeding more lightly, so the party dumped containers of lime juice, bags of sugar and rice and heavy tools. Burke also discharged a number of men, among them the foreman Ferguson, although not as many as he would have liked.
"Our journey so far has been very satisfactory," Wills wrote to his mother. "We are most fortunate as regards the season, for there has been more rain this winter than has been known for the last four or five years. In fact, it seems probable that we shall finish our work in a much shorter period than was anticipated, very likely in 10 or 12 months."
Balranald dates back to the late 1840s, when the area's Commissioner for Crown Lands, George James McDonald, arrived at what was then just a tiny outpost and named it after his hometown in Scotland's Outer Hebrides.

This was a very interesting exercise to gain a photograph to prove that TG47 and I arrived within 100m of Burke and Wills camp in Balranald. But as the photo shows we made it. Thanks for publishing this series of caches Geocaching Australia, I love them and the challenge of reaching them, though they are not usually as easy as this one.

do you know how hard it is to do this when you use your phone as a GPS? very difficult. I had to get my wife's phone to take the picture of my phone, her phone had trouble focusing on my screen due to flooding, and to top it off we had the geoson screaming his head off in the back. OK that last one had nothing to do with the phone but it adds to the frustration.
Found the cache while on the return leg of our eastern states road/ski trip. We started in Perth and drove across the country visiting relatives in Adelaide and Melbourne. Before heading off to Canberra to pick one more member of the party up. Final destination was Jindabyne for a couple of weeks skiing at Perisher and Threadbo. I managed to pick up a few caches along the way and added a couple of new states to the found list. This is the first Burke and Wills cache we managed to come across on our trip. Currently returning home this is day two of our four day journey. We parked nearby and I wandered up a track to get closer to the published coordinates before taking the required photo.

#GA1050 - 07:00; After an overnighter in Balranald on the way home with albida33, fitzy_1965 and Sol de lune, we stopped off so that f65 and I could log this cache. The river is certainly much higher than I've seen it on earlier visits. TFTC Geocaching Australia

Found on our way from Mildura to Swan Hill via Balranald today. Our photo of the GPSr isn't very clear but shows mr sharnie's tribe 20 metres from GZ. TFTC
I looked up the GCA mobile site on my phone last night and spotted a few GCA caches in town. I’ve never found any of the Burke & Wills caches before, so it was a nice bonus that I could get a new cache type for my list.
I got as close to GZ as I could manage, getting to 29m on one side and 42m from the other.
Attaching a few photos of my GPS on both sides, and of the area in general.

It was a bit tricky to stop on the upper level for a photo, and I assume that Burke and Wills didn't cross the bridge when they were here So I detoured to the lower level for a look - seems to be a popular spot!
WanderingAus wandered by on day 120 of our annual Climatic Refugee trip, making our way from Darwin towards Perth via Mount Isa, Townsville, Emerald, Goondiwindi, Gunnedah, Young, Yass and Wentworth.
While wandering around Balranald taking photos for Waymarks I crossed the bridge over the Murrumbidgee River, and noticed the icon for this Virtual on the gpsr.
After Waymarking the Waymarkable items on the three bridges I returned to the point on the pedestrian footway nearest to the given coords and took a couple of photos and screen captures, with the gpsr bouncing between 9 and 12 Croms from GZ, which appears to be in the far lane about in line with the join in the concrete wall - I left that spot to the trucks.
I then made my way to the river bank, where I was unable to get closer than 26 Croms from GZ, which appears to be in the middle of the fast flowing river, under the edge of the bridge, but I still took some photos and screen captures anyway.
My find No 5,110, TPLF (took photos left footprints)

found this spot this morning. We stayed in Balranald whilst on our way to Adelaide to see Dad. Got my first Burke and Wills cache near Milparinka.
Thanks Acko and She who must be Obeyed

It was very pleasant down by the river this morning - the subtle colours in the trees, their trunks, the water and the river bank were superb. We concluded that the listed coordinates were actually somewhere on the river under the bridge. The photo we have added to the Gallery to validate our find shows two GPS units: one shows the coordinates as S34 38.769 E143 33.938; the other shows that we were 38.2m from the listed coordinates, TFTC
PS - a Major Milestone: we have just noticed that this was our 1000th unique GA find. (We only log unque finds despite some caches being able to be logged more than once under particular conditions).

Well, if Burke and Wills were camping here now, they'd be getting their feet wet! 40 metres was as close as I could get without entering the flood waters, but according to the instructions that is okay!

We drove down to near the boat ramp to grab the photo for this cache, getting us reasonably close to the published coords. I was hoping to find some evidence of B & W's crossing in the form of a monument or plaque, but couldn't see anything. Lovely little spot to stop and stretch the legs.
Thanks Geocaching Australia.

After a long day on the road, this marked the end of the days drive and a place to stop for dinner and a sleep. I am sure it was not so civilised when B&W came through here. Thanks

It was around 11:30 when we arrive at Balranald this morning. A quick stop in the turnoff between the bridges, and a stroll to the Murrumbidgee River sign for a photo. I then realised that the GPSr was reading "101m" from GZ, 1m too far, so walked a few metres further for the qualifying shot. Both are attached!

Virtually stopped and stretched our virtual legs.
Just the right place for a driver reviver, just as Burke found out all those years ago.

Second of a few B&W caches today - now I understand the camel in the GCA site splash. Never seen the place looking so green and the river so high - the locals expect it to peak in the next couple of days after all the recent rain. Have taken a photo and will upload when I get back home. Thanks GCA.
129. It wasn't hard to talk Mr Winglen into sidetracking to this one. Especially when he knew that there was a new icon as well.

A quick grab on our way back from SA to the ACT. The river has certainly filled up since we were here last.

woot *FTF* with CazBol. Nice area here, we thought perhaps B&W and their men would have enjoyed swimming in the river to cool down.
