Description

A nice spot hidden away in Namadgi

Unlike most caches in Namagi you will not have to climb a mountain to get this one. While the 360 degree view may not be as spectacular as a mountain top view the falls are amazing. The cache itself is at the top of the falls but just below the falls are the best views.

There are two ways to approach this cache either direct from yankee hat carpark along bogong creek. Taking this way I would recommend the north bank as the south side is rather scrubby but still possible. Johnny Boys Walkabout blog is a useful guide (http://jevans.pcug.org.au/Pages/Walk%20Descriptions/2008_12_02.htm). Alternatively if you haven't yet found the caches on Mt Gudgenby you can do those (going up the saddle) then instead of returning the way you went up shoot a bearing to the cache and head down through the scrub. While the regrowth looks thick it is rather easy to get through and there is no granite slabs, large boulders or many fallen trees to navigate over/around. Either way this is not just a leisurely stroll so be prepared and take the usual bushwalking precautions (let people know where you are, take plenty of water, etc.)

Once there the cache should be an easy find but may be moved slightly in the near future so it's less likely to be muggled if muggles ever come up here. The main reason for this position is that it was about the only spot where there was a little shelter from the rain.

Spoiler Photos are in the Gallery and it might be worth using them as it's a fair distance to go not to find it.

This is my first cache hidden so feedback is appreciated.

Chooo ooo *FTF* with MtbikerOz.

We didn’t head directly to this, but decided on a detour via a “nearby” GC cache! Hey it was only 2km away – but what a doozy of a 2km that was! Boy – half of that terrain was impenetrable! Slowed down to well under 1km/h! It was like walking through a giant ‘pick up sticks’ game, but very steep, ultra slippery, and lashing bushes! Hard work!

Still, in the end, we were only ‘late’ by an hour!
At GZ, the falls were spectacular! Certainly this location should be on all serious geocachers agenda! We had lunch at GZ!

The way back, although still challenging, was easier than the approach, and we made relatively good time. Spotted a fair sized black snake on the way back, and it didn’t seems fussed by our presence! Gave it a wide berth!

Total of 18km walked for the day, in 8 hours! Thanks cantanga great cache - and MtbikerOz for the company!

Coooeeee, a joint *FTF* witrh TankEngine, and one of two FTF's out there for the day for us.

This find has been 6 whole months in the making, finally another cache appeared "nearby" to tempt TankEngine and I out there to collect this one as well on our FTF hunt. GC2RX5M (Abort Abort)is a mere 2km away - in the OTHER valley North.

We left the Yankee Hat carpark at 6:50 am, went and found the Abort Abort cache by walking west across the grassy plains and up beside the creek that took us there. Having found that one, this GCA one is a mere 2km away - in the next valley!

So, off we went climbing slightly, contouring a lot to get to the saddle that separated the two valleys. We made good progress for the first km (or so), then the next 500m (either side and including the saddle) WAS HORRENDOUS. HORRENDOUS.
(When a group of us came down from Secret Squirrels Mt. GUDGENBY caches, we came across criss-crossed fallen saplings, and often we were walking 2 metres above the ground on them.) BUT, in this case, we were climbing, and we had to climb over, go under, break, push, shove and JUST SLOG IT OUT. Progress was something like 500m per hour - if that! IT WAS 'ORRIBLE. It slackened off a bit, and we were going downhill to this cache, still slippery and tricky, but by 11:50am (5 hrs and 1 cache after we started), we arrived here.

MAGNIFICENT LOCATION.

Cache was found quickly - thanks for the photos.
Then we had lunch and admired the falls with lots of water going over them. I was standing at the top at one stage, looked around, and I could see the water (probably early Dec 2010) would have been ALL OVER THE FULL WIDTH and quite deep.

After lunch, time to go, we bagan the long walk back to the car. Got there 2 hrs 35 mins later.

Thanks Cantanga for a MAGNIFICENT LOCATION. A Namadgi hidden gem.

Thanks also TankEngine for the company on the whole walk and day, a pleasure as always to share geocaching and FTFs with you.
