Description

There is an unusual breed of fish to be found in the Australian environment. Little is currently known about them and researchers are asking cachers to assist broaden the knowledge base. We have also heard of other pothole marine species such as jellyfish, turtles and sharks. All sightings count.

Limited research around the Lismore Nimbin area has shown that there are wandering groups of these fish. They appear mysteriously overnight and wait around until a LCC Road Crew discover them. Then they mysteriously vanish. Often to reappear in the same location a number of weeks or months later.

At this stage the highest concentration of finds has been on country roads between Lismore and Nimbin.  Blakebrook seems to be a fairly central location for the most recent sightings.

The research centre is keen to collect as many photographic images of these creatures as possible. GPS co-ordinates will assist others find and study them.

No fishing gear is required but a good set of shock absorbers may well be a valuable asset. The pothole fish should be able to be found by 2WD as well as 4WD vehicles.

A new species was discovered today. It is the roadlump fish... Similar to the pothole fish but instead of being a pothole they are a lump of road material that has been decorated to make it more noticable. This species was noticed along the Lismore Dunoon road today.

Congratulations to Nabarlek for the FTF. A couple of great specimens as well. Thanks for your contribution to the research.

Jan 2012  I discovered a new one of these in the Tregeagle area... not far from the school. It is a multi coloured one and looks quite fresh.

POINT HENRY ROAD VICTORIA

I found these strange creatures when driving to Point Henry after other caches. Very Happy

On a recent trip to Nimbin, NSW we saw our first ever 'pothole fish'. There were many creative drawings around these holes awaiting repair. We've selected one of our favourites - not really a fish but quite creative and colourful.
Thanks for this cache Renroc.

Hi Renroc
There is a small road that runs off Stride St, Huonville, Tasmania; where my Mum lives and the tide had obviously been pretty high through the night as I found this 'fish' round a pothole there!
Guess the water boys had been out early this morning and were having a bit of fun.
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.

Spotted a small school of these mystifying creatures when I was on the road to a local park with the kids. I didn't see them move but the next week when we drove by they were gone! Shocked

Spotted this one on Boboyan Road in the ACT....

It's not a fish as such, but it's a painted pothole......and it's huge.

Hope it makes the grade.

This appeared over night in this area-placed by the phantom pothole fisherperson-no doubt.

We discovered this massive pothole fish whilst stopped on the side of the road to collect another nearby cache.

Spotted this amazing rainbow pothole fish on the way to the Mandorah Beach Hotel - wasn't sure if this species ventured across the harbour from Darwin - but they do! Had fun hunting for this cache and happy to finally have it ticked off the list Smile

This pothole fish was found on the Nubeena Road between Port Arthur and Nubeena. Certainly is a shock if you hit this one at the maximum legal speed of 90km/hr on this road.

Pothole Fish
Sublime Point Road
Leura, NSW

Never thought I'd find one of these species up in the Blue Mountains!

But there it was . . .

Photo follows in another hour . . .

I see heaps of the primitive species of Pothole Fish, as well as the more developed species in the eastern states, but stopping for them is not always easy, as you don't see them until you are on top of them, and they are usually in 110K zones. That particular one was easy as the "Warning - Standard Survey Mark" placard was also accompanied by an older and larger white "BM" disc, and I saw it from about 100 metres away.

The "family of four tiddlers" are the most common occurrence of the species in the west. I will try to obtain further specimens in the future.

WanderingAus, Thanks for your contribution to the research. The species you have discovered inland are very primitive. They may well help with research on the evolution of this strange creature.

WanderingAus wandered by on a maintenance run, eventually heading to Bruce Rock for the annual Back To The Bush Veterans Reunion, but my first cache on the run was GC20FFE WanAus 152 - LKA Wyalkatchem, and GC2VC16 Putty Put and Possims by Blair Family in Goomalling was almost on the direct line to it.

After finding the cache I went back to the main street leading out of town and came across the Goomaling Cemetery. Of course I had to swing in there to claim a find of GA1531 The Cemetery Bonanza by stringy, and naturally I couldn't find a cemetery in my own stomping ground without placing a cache there, so after a walk around identifying the graves of service men and women I plonked down GC37CGY WanAus 208 - LKA Goomaling.

Back on the road towards WanAus 152 - LKA Wyalkatchem I needed to find a place to camp for the night, and Camps Australia Wide has a listing at Minivale, just north of the Namelcatchem Nature Reserve and not far off my route. After finding the designated area I decided against stopping there, and instead headed back to Namelcatchem Nature Reserve and to a camp spot I stayed at in the reserve two years earlier when I "First To Finded" GC17CAR Namelcatchem by ZED!.

Back on the road the next day I was less than 5 Km from WanAus 152 - LKA Wyalkatchem when I pulled over to try for a find of my cache GA1613 WanAus 137 - WA State Survey Marks. Despite a thorough search in the vicinity of the Survey Mark placard I didn't find it, but as I returned to the geoPajero I noticed this Pothole Fish, so all was not lost.

WanderingAus wandered by with the WanderingMrs (aka SWMBO) on day 107 of our annual Climatic Refugee trip, exploring between Charleville and Morven along the Warrego Highway, and came across plenty of Pothole Fish on the way to Morven. On the way back I finally convinced the WanderingMrs to slow down enough to get a photo.

If I'd got A Round Tuit I could probably have caught about a hundred Pothole Fish on the way down from Darwin and across and down through Queensland, but towing a caravan at 90 K you don't get much chance for photos.

This is one of the pothole fish you may well discover.
