Description
This cache is in readiness for the Solar Car race that is to leave Darwin on 16 Oct,2011 and head for Adelaide.
Any sightings of these cars along the way can be logged as can anything that is solar powered on public land. Let's see what's out there.
Coords and a photo is what is required although from previous experience I know how hard it is to get a good photo of the solar cars.
Log as many times as you like but we are looking for variety here.
This is a picture of a solar panel that operates a gate opening system.
Happy hunting!!

I saw this impressive solar powered light system at a boat ramp at Lake Eppalock today.
It was the middle of the day, so, of course, we don’t know if it was working effectively or not.

Noticed this big array of solar panels on the Fishermans Co-op facility at the harbour at Coffs Harbour. Had a flashback to this locationless remembering a previous log on this back in June 2012. Thanks corunnaroad for the opportunity to highlight the sustainable powering of this significant facility at Coffs Habour. It was a glorious day for caching while on an Easter visit to town.

This bird is solar powered and the wings move in the wind. It is at The Wetlands Browns Plains Queensland. There are a GC caches nearby.
Going to Yeppoon for a week and deviated in Bajool Qld just south of Rockhampton Qld to find a cache and managed to pick up three locationless as well. Bajool was a sleepy little country town until the minerals boom and now people are starting to live here as infrastructure appears for a near by deep water port and coal loading facility. Spied these on the roof of the community hall. I discovered they not only power the needs of the hall but the town common water pump as well. TFTL CORUNNAROAD

A solar powered parking meter in the Launceston CBD in northern Tasmania. This one very newly installed in an area previously with free all day parking. Apparently installed to give fairness to all who want to park in the area. Sceptical??, methinks this yet another excuse for revenue raising by the local council.. thanks..!!

I hope this is in the spirit of the cache.
This was a project that I worked on some years back, a solar powered (well, recharged) mobile phone payment system, parking meter.
The gist was that you could use your phone to pay for your parking, and it would appear as an itemised charge on your phone bill. That is until the phone comapny development agreement went sour and the whole thing went kafluey.
There were 2 trial sites established (when the project was still a goer), the on street parking along Bronte Road, Bronte Beach, NSW and along the southern edge of Flagstaff Gardens, Melbourne, Vic. Sadly, when the project closed, the meters were removed.
The photos are of the first pre-production prototype to be made at our South Melbourne office, and was set up outside for a publicity photoshoot. The coordinates are of that location.
Using as a claim for my Summer Scavenger Series.
Thanks for the locationless cache corunnaroad.

Well, there's lots of uses for solar panels but I doubt you could find a better use than this. GC6PMFC Village Gate is a solar powered geocache.
Little Squirrel has built a reputation for very well made and unusual cache hides. This one consists of a solar panel at the top of the post, a metal box containing the cache part way down the post and a release button hidden somewhere nearby.
The panel keeps an battery charged. The battery runs the electronics control the door release to give access to the cache. The trick is in finding the release button.

USQ where i work is going solar. stage 1 is to install a roof on its largest car park made up of solar panels this stage 1 comprises of 4000 panels to generate 1.9 MW of a area the size of four football fields. I believe they are installing battery systems around the campus at the same time

Where do you park your solar car? In Australian's biggest solar carpark of course.
When our local shopping centre was re-developed they built a carpark on top of the centre. Instead of providing shade with shade cloth sails or a conventional roof, the saw-tooth roof structure actually supports solar panels. 636kW worth of solar panels or enough to power 20% of the centre's air conditioning for a year.
In my photo attached, its not so easy to see how it works because its actually towards the back of the centre, although there is signage at the top of the ramp and when you are in the carpark you can look up underneath the panels. They are using the panels for shade for the carpark as well as generating electricity, although they don't work that well for rain protection.
If you are interested, here is a link to an article on the setup. https://onestepoffthegrid.com.au/gold-coast-shopping-centre-adds-636kw-solar-carpark-australias-largest/

Just when we were wondering where we were going to find something solar powered for the Summer Scavenger Series we remembered this. A cool solar powered bird sculpture in the Berrinba Wetlands, Brisbane. Not only do the wings flap but the bird goes up when the wings push down and down when they're up . . . . yeah, probably not the best description but the movements are amazingly realistic.

This is a solar powered CCTV camera at the wharf. With the very large parking area, people used to come and do wheelies around the car park
It's a solarpowered "you are not allowed to drive more than 40 km/h sign when the lights are flashing", not to be confused with their siblings without the flashing lights.
Nothing better than a solar powered ticket machine. Maybe there isn't a backup so if there is no sun it goes out of order? It did so not in order when I was there. Found this one near UWA on Hackett Dr

Uterne Solar Power Station in Alice Springs. Uterne means ‘bright sunny day’ in the local Arrente language.
When built, the system was projected to produce 2300 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity per year, equivalent to the annual consumption of 270 average Alice Springs houesholds. The solar farm will produce about 1% of Alice Springs’ electricity a year and can meet 3% of peak demand on a sunny day.

Solar Powered Parking Meter - Wollongong.
In the vicinity of the Wollongong Railway Station. The parking meter gets its energy from the Sun but those seeking to park their car must still pay. Interestingly the meter is on the south side of a tall building & the cells also face south so it would only be for a few hours late on a Summer afternoon that it would ever get direct sunlight.

The building in the photo has been in Nanango for a long time. From the mid 1970's to the mid 1980's it was used as an office for the Tarong Power Station. When they moved out there was a need for the Council to find another building for the power generator from the old Butter factory as that building had been sold. the generator was used to power the butter factory and to supply power to the town of Nanango. The council decided to move the visitors information centre into the front part of the building. Many companies and business became involved and Solar Panels were installed on the roof to supplement the power used by the information centre. the old generator is maintained by a group of men and it is started up on the first Saturday of every Month. Interested people come from far away to see and witness this generator in working condition.
The centre is named the energy Centre. Once inside you can see various methods of conserving power from light bulbs to appliances.

WanderingAus wandered by after replacing one of my Munzees missing from the Horseshoe Bridge, heading for Perth Map Centre at 900 Hay street with the idea of replacing my Magellan Explorist 610 gpsr which has been giving me power and data no-connection grief. Having received a payout from my insurance company for the 'un-repairable' gpsr (Magellan won't touch them once the warranty runs out) the WanderingMrs suggested I needed to try another brand.
When I explained what I needed in my new gpsr to the guy at Perth Map Centre, and suggested perhaps a top-of-the-line Garmin, he advised me that 'Garmin mapping is not quite as good as the Magellan mapping you got with your Magellan Sportrak Map last century' or words to that effect. He then handed me a Magellan Explorist brochure, which of course covers the range from the GC (best value for money and best geocaching gpsr, only lacking topo maps) all the way past the 610 to the 710 (excellent mapping, as well as point-to-point [to hunt geocaches etc] AND turn-by-turn [for on-road travel] navigation).
When I walked out of the store I spotted this solar powered parking ticket machine across the road. I hadn't noticed before, but there seem to be dozens of these solar powered ticket machines in Perth.

Hi corunnaroad
On the 27th September this year, I had an early morning (0500hrs) leaving home at 0600hrs in order to meet Budgietas in Hobart to travel to Devonport to try and complete the Octogon series by 2y's tassies Octogon Series. Left Hobart around 0700hrs and found a couple of caches on the way before starting the series. The weather gods were very kind to us today; sunny, warm and fine. We achieved the objective of the day and I ended up with twenty-nine finds for the day, the most finds I've had in one day. Finally arrived back in Huonville at 2330hrs.
But during the course of the day at Octagon Outer 6 I came across these Solar panels powering the pumps for the irrigation scheme used to water the pastures and crops of the local farms. The area concerned is around Wesley Vale and Moriarty on the North West Coast of Tasmania.
Loved the series and enjoyed the birds of prey that were flying over-head during the passing of our sojourn as well as the scenery and the farm animals.

Have logged under Barbecues Galore before but worth it for this one.
Edit - can't seem to link to the photos. Will work on it.
