BENDIGO ICEM

I've Cached Everywhere, Man is the largest cache series hidden in Australia. It is made up of the locations made famous by Lucky Star in the song "I've been everywhere" in 1962, lyrics by Geoff Mack. Bendigo is the eighty-third town mentioned in the song, at line five in verse four. After eighteen weeks on the road, covering over 15,000 kilometres, I only cached in nine towns mentioned in the song or in the extra verses written for Geocaching Australia. I should be able to cache in a few more on the way home, and once I'm home I'll be doing maintenance on quite a few of my GC caches in the towns of the song, so there might be a few more placed there too.

Bendigo is a major regional city in the state of Victoria, Australia, located very close to the geographical centre of the state[2] and approximately 150 kilometres (93 mi) north west of the state capital Melbourne. It is the second largest inland city and fourth most populous city in the state. The estimated urban population is 91,713.[1][3] It is the administrative centre for the City of Greater Bendigo which encompasses both the urban area and outlying towns spanning an area of approximately 3,000 square kilometres (1,158 sq mi). Inhabitants of Bendigo are known as Bendigonians.[4]

Originally taking its name from the Bendigo Creek, the name became official in 1891. Shortly afterwards, the term "Bendigonians" was coined to describe its residents.

Bendigo is one of the most significant Victorian era boomtowns in Australia. Gold was discovered in 1851 at The Rocks on Bendigo Creek and the Bendigo Valley was found to be a rich alluvial field where gold could easily be extracted. News of the finds intensified the Victorian gold rush bringing an influx of migrants to the city from around the world within a year and transforming it from a station to a major settlement in the newly proclaimed Colony of Victoria.

Bendigo is notable for its Victorian architectural heritage and gold mining history. Since 1851 over 22 million ounces of gold have been extracted from its goldmines, making it the highest producing 19th Century goldfield in Australia in the nineteenth century and the largest gold mining economy in Eastern Australia. It is the largest finance centre in Victoria outside of Melbourne as home to Australia's only provincially headquartered retail bank, the Bendigo Bank, and the Bendigo Stock Exchange (BSX).

A number of cachers have commented on the location of this cache, being in Bendigo East rather than Bendigo, but anyone who has picked up GA0620 The Tardis by smileypj knows how big The City of Bendigo is. Not being a native Bendigonian,  I wasn't sure what areas would be safe from inundation, so I sought the high ground. I could have gone further south within The City of Bendigo but that would have been even further from the centre of the city, which is less than 3 CroKs away. Many people feel Lake Weeroona is at the centre of Bendigo, and that's only 1.66 CroKs away.

I commend all cachers to study the I've Cached Everywhere, Man Wiki, particularly this part:

Staying with the Free and Open nature of the Geocaching Australia website, you are free to choose any location you wish and hide a geocache there. There Can Be More Than One. i.e. Just because a location already has an ICEM geocache does not restrict you from placing another one.

The only requests for this cache series are:

  • Try to hide the geocache within the area described by the location. It doesn't have to be "town centre", but it shouldn't be 50km away either.

Perhaps someone would care to hide an ICEM cache closer to the centre of Bendigo, rather than just complain. I'm happy to archive my rarely visited cache.

The cache is a 180mm x 180mm x 80mm cliplock container hidden at the base of a tree with a piece of an old drum and leaf litter for camouflage. Initial contents are toenail clippers, thong keyring, Hot Wheels '66 Ford Fairlane GT HW Premiere car, ring and bangle, horse, cow, pig, log book, pen, 2 pencils, and a pencil sharpener. The swaps are in a separate ziplock bag to give them extra protection.

First To Find Award Congratulations to

Swaggies are not tradeable items. Please feel free to take them without making a trade, but please leave a note in the logbook and your online log, and do log them online. Groundspeak Trackables (geocoins and travel bugs) can NOT be logged into this cache, or any other GCA cache. Please don't drop any Groundspeak Trackables in this cache, and if you find any in this cache please remove them and log a "Grab it from somewhere else" log for the trackable.

I dont think i have ever visited this area of my own town, plenty of development going on. A lovely big cache in lovely condition made for a fun find. This one marks the end of my first GA caching day.

Today is the first time i have set out to find Geocache Australia caches. I forgot all about the app and typed coords into geooh go instead which was a bit painful. I had a fun time finding seven and DNFing five.

Passing through Bendigo with geovan in tow we detoured here to find your cache.

Nice to find another one in the series.

Many thanks WanderingAus for placing this cache.

Cache and contents in good condition.

My first ICEM, dalerious was the finder. On our way to the event in Bendigo today.
A hot walk in the scrub with our compasses swinging around. But with two of us together eventually it pointed us in the right direction. The cache and contents were dry, thanks to the camouflage.
Thanks for placing it.

Caching in Bendigo today before we head to Canberra tomorrow for four days then we head to Alexandra for the Mega. I have really concentrated on GCA hides this trip as I could not pass up the opportunity as we were driving past many GCA trig points and CORS and other GCA hides. Parked at the roadside and walked on and soon spied a host of sorts and lifted that and there was the cache. Signed log and placed container in its little spot and recovered. We are returning from the Red Centre Experience Event in Alice Springs and are currently caching around Bendigo. Today we again concentrated on GCA caches as bonus points are on offer and this was one we found. TFTC Clan Minotaur

Out and about with some time to kill in Bendigo while the girls were off shopping so I decided to grab a few caches while in town, spotted this one on Tomtom as I was passing and stopped for a quick find.
Contents slightly damp but still OK.
Thanks

#GA978 - 15:40; After a week in Victoria with the geohoney, it was time to head north for home. With plenty of time up our sleeves, we decided to take our time and stop off in a couple more of the historic goldfields towns between Creswick and the Hume Highway. Daylesford was a bit damp and bleak, so after checking out a few of the local attractions, it was off to Castlemaine, then on to Bendigo. Despite the rather large Marilyn Monroe figure in the centre of the city, we didn't realise there was an exhibition there featuring Marilyn, so didn't stop. As we approached GZ for this cache, I was a little concerned because of the significant earthworks in the area, but I needn't have worried, as the area where the cache is located remained untouched. Cache located in good condition, despite more than 2 years since it was last found. Log signed and cache returned for the next to find. TFTC WanderingAus Very HappyClan Cerberus

Would you believe the Wenchette is old enough to be looking at Uni courses? Open Day at LaTrobe Bendigo gave us a chance to drop off Traffic Control 1 and also find a few puzzles that were solved many moons ago.

We were heading home via road I once traveled to and from Uni and noticed this cache pop up on the screen. A short detour to the start of the closed new road then a short walk soon had the cache in hand. After emptying out some water from the container we signed the dry log book and returned everything as found.

Thanks for this ICEM cache.

Ah-ha! Another ICEM cache for me to tick off. We were in Bendigo for Easter and there are soooo many caches to choose from there. Once I'd put a "must do" on the A-Z Challenge, this one came next on the list. What a quiet spot this was today, being a public holiday and in a fairly out-of-the-way spot too. TFTC to WanAus

In my never ending quest to cache everywhere.... man.... I ended up in the more industrious areas of Bendigo Smile
Bendigo owes it's existence to the industries that sprung up here Very Happy
Add to that the caches proximity to one of the arteries that carry water in this dry climate and you have an appropriate spot for a Bendigo ICEM cache Cool
At least there are no muggles out here armed, or not, to disturb the search for the cache Razz

Another big day caching in Bendigo and surrounds with 67 finds and no DNF's. Started the day caching out to Axedale then spending a day with the Central Victorian Geocachers on a 4WD adventure through the Fosterville Hills.

There were a number of caches placed for the event including a smiley face geoart in the forest. Also completed a number of challenge caches for various milestones and made a find on an unpublished cache.

Finished the day with some CBD night caching before heading back to the cabin for a bourbon and pizza.

Quick find in the dark tonight - good to find a large container in Bedigo. TFTC. Very Happy

Our road GPS certainly took us to the outer blocks of town but we ended up quite close to GZ. A short walk and the cache was in hand. The cache and its contents were in good condition. Another ICEm added to our Finds list. We hadn't noticed it on the way in, but on the way out we noticed a sign on a gate on the opposite side of the road which said, in part "This property is guarded by shot gun three days a week - you guess which three". Certainly not a welcoming place. TFTC WanAus.

We were in Bendigo for the weekend for the Flash Mob Event and decided to do some obligatory caching. We've been steadily growing our ICEM cache finds but we need to do quite a bit more wandering yet. Nice large container but we conducted no trades today. Our thanks to Wandering Aus for the cache

An enjoyable quick drive-by, and my first IBEM cache. Co-ords were good, it was well hidden and I re-hid it the same way. In a discrete location and a nice big container too, love that. TNLN. Thanks WanderingAus!

What an easy bunch to please - I've added the following to the cache page, in response to recent logs.

We had heard about this cache series but this is the first cache in the series that we have come across. We wonder about the location though - this cache is located in Bendigo East, not Bendigo. Was Bendigo East mentioned in the song? Todays satellite aray had the GZ about 9m to the west of where we found the cache.

TNLN . . SL . . Thanks for the hunt WanderingAus.

Found 10.45am
Not too hard to find as the coords were spot on. Interesting choice of area for a Bendigo ICEM cache, the people over the road seem to have a problem with visitors so we made a quick retreat.

Thanks WanderingAus for the GCA cache

In bendigo for a few days before heading further south and managed to find this one today. Cache is all good.

Thanks for the ICEM......man

I really enjoyed finding this cache today. I found it with caughtatwork and he was very excited to find an ICEM cache as this was our first of many that we hope to find around Australia.

GabGab and I were in Bendigo looking for frogs as part of the LeapFrog moving cache race. When we saw that there was an ICEM cache on offer, we simply had to head up this way to find it.
It was a nice easy find too as it was pretty much uncovered. We covered the cache a little better, but left the marker in place so future finders should have no problems, but it should keep any stray muggles at bay.
This is out first ICEM cache and we were very pleased to be able to find it.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks AnderingAus for taking the time and effort to hide this ICEM cache for us to find. It is really appreciated, even if it doesn't get all that many finds. Hopefully the more GCA caches get out there, the more people will want to find them.

We have been away on holidays but had intended to place an IBEM cache on our return. We hadn't had any brilliant ideas though so it great to see one here on our return.

Gee the neighbours over the road are a friendly bunch Anxious

Cache found easily and we left a Bendigo pathtag. Hope this is the first of many in the series.

Found by Roma and Max.
Loved the theme of your cache as it surely represents your caching experiences!
We should have left our search for a bit later in the day as it was raining lightly this morning and not the best conditions for log signing!
We made no exchange, just left our mark in the log.
Thanks WanAus for placing this one in Bendigo.
Cheers and safe travels,
from Romax

WanderingAus wandered by with the WanderingMrs (aka SWMBO) on day 128 of our annual Climatic Refugee trip, caching through Bindoon (Verse 5), Carnarvon (Verse 5), Kununurra (Verse 5), Pine Creek (Verse 7), 11 weeks in Darwin (Verse 2), Tennant Creek (Verse 7), Cloncurry (Verse 4), Augathella (Verse 2), and stopping for a couple of nights in Bendigo (Verse 4), so after hunting down a couple of caches in driving rain and heavy thunderstorms, I decided to place a cache on a patch of high ground.

Ready to go, enjoy.
