Description

I thought that a great way to bring Australian Cachers together would be to share a whole heap of pictures from all of the random leap year caching events that will be held around Australia.

So therefore to be able to log this cache, you must:

  • Attend a geocaching event on the 29 February 2012, 2016 2020 etc.
  • Provide a picture of yourself or your table or your group at the event (if possible)
  • In your log provide a description of how you enjoyed the event, your memories or any funny stories would be a great addition.

Thankyou for logging this cache, and hope you all enjoy the events and enjoy that extra day of work we all have this year.

You may log this cache more than once but only once every four years!

I attended the event, 'Leap year 2020 at The Rock' (GC8GM16) hosted by baby&Mrs gopher on 29-Feb-20.

My attended log from the event is as follows:
With a day off and an event in ‘The Rock’ plus pre-geocaching lead to a great day out. I also got a FTF on the cache ‘Break the Drive – Urana’ (GA12529). Big Grin I started out with collecting the finds around Urana which included the most disgusting cache I have ever found (GC3BDFX). [xx(]Twisted[xx(]Twisted I completely disapprove of that cache and hope to never see a hide like that ever again. [xx(]Twisted[xx(]Twisted I visited a few different spots around and I enjoyed the ‘Leap year 2020 at The Rock’ event hosted by B&MG. A great BBQ and many geo-conversations were had by all. It was great to meet/re-meet you all. There were also many GCA moveable caches signed while we were there. TB visit on all caches. I would like to thank all CO’s of the caches I found and for allowing them to bring joy to me and the rest of the caching community. Big Grin TFTE and TFTC’s Big Grin

I ran an event at Shepparton on the 29th February 2016, called 366th Day, and also placed a cache nearby of the same name, which is still there
We had a good turn up but the crowd photo I took was in the shade, I’ve posted a small group one instead.

13-Jan-18
This was my first Geocaching event. We were packed ready to head off in holidays to Victoria then Tassy to catch up with ClimbingSon. When I heard about a Leap Year event I thought that the opportunity to attend was too goo to miss out on. I left MrT at home to finish packing and I headed down to Penrith for the early morning event. I had never met any of the people there so didn't feel comfortable taking photos so hope my attendance log will be ok. Had a coffee and chat then headed home and off on holidays. TFTC

@9th February 2016, we attend this event whilst we were travelling around Tasmania. Wentworth Play park Leap year event. GC5JJFF0.

How did I miss this one. I only had a limited number of unfound hides in the Gympie area so I did not have to leave home early for the 1530 start. Arrived to see a group of about twenty seated around the table. There was good conversation and the CO had a novel way of running his competition. Nearly all of us won a prize. The other prize was the nearby GC hide that was about 8 metres up a tree so the Monkey amongst us scaled the tree and we all had the container in hand. There were 4 new hides released for this event and thery were all in this park and a good walk and chat was had by all. We broke up into about four groups with about equal numbers. A good couple of hours. GC69C94 Gympie 29th February 2016. Clan MinotaurClappingDancing

Hah, my moment to shine! GC69BT1, the 29 February 2016 event under the watchful eye of Captain Cook.

"Where? In the shadow of the Captain Cook statue, the man in charge of the first British Roytal Navy expedition of the East coast of Terra Australis. He was an explorer, cartographer and navigator, with a lot of FTFs in his life. And... On 29th February 1776, Captain James Cook was unanimously elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (The Life of Captain James Cook: About Captain Cook by Arthur Kintsen). Coincidence with how we feel today about him and leap years and exploration? Yes, but I leave it up to you to feel all excited about it!"

14-Apr-16
Attended Leap into Meet and Greet Clare 2016.....there was so many great events to be involved in, but none in the Mid North readily accessible, so thanks to The Kelly Gang for running this event. It was a great catch up and a chance to meet new cachers. Clapping TFTC ParisLaura

Leap Year Sunset Gathering, Tamworth NSW
We timed driving back from the Geocaching NSW Bathurst Invasion weekend events to co-incide with the leap year event at Tamworth on Monday evening. A chance to stop, revive, have dinner and catch up with geocaching friends before continuing on home. This was our third event in three days. What a fun side to geocaching it is!

I was keen to attend a leap year event as I knew it would be a long time before I could get a smiley for this one again. However I realised I would not be in Tasmania after I had indicated my attendance at an event in northern Tasmania. No worries I'm sure Melbourne will have an event - yes there was one at Albert Park Lake and I just had enough time to squeeze it in before my flight home. I met 2 cachers at the event that were attending multiple events on the leap year day and one cacher was travelling over 800km in one day just to attend over 10 events on one day - very dedicated! This event was on 29/2/2016 and called Inercalary or Leap GC6B1E7

This was our final day to fill our calendar grid. We had big plans to attend as many of the events listed about town... then work happened. So first up we attended A Breakfast Proposal event by Freddo, grabbed a cache or two before heading home to grab some lunch then headed up the freeway to work. Our work location today was Picadilly, perfect because the next event, Take A Frog Leap Forward... was at Mt Barker. Had a picnic with the gang and enjoyed a night walk after. All in all was agreat day with 2 events, several geocaches found (including this one) and our calendar grid now complete Very HappyClappingDancing

My 3rd Leap Year as a Geocacher, with a cache on the first one, an event on the last one, and another event this time.
Even nicer was being able to help a fellow cacher make the event Wink

And nice to be able to log a GCA on the day too. Dancing

Well an event for the 29th was needed but I was really unsure of which event to choose, it was either get up really really early, sneak out at lunch time or stay back and find something after work. I of course chose this event as my lunch time sneak out of the office.

A very big thankyou to C4 who graciously took a detour to pick me up in the city so that I could attend and then returned me before the GPOs clock chimed.

It was great to catch up and chat and to drop off a collection of travel bugs that I have had for way too long!!!! Thanks Spidermonkey9 for a lovely little gathering - oh and the fortune cookies were a nice touch, it seems my fortune has been foretold and ill be getting a promotion soon.

29-Feb-16
Had a great time with great people over a great meal in Millicent SE South Aust. to celebrate Leap Year . Got to meet the local cachers and share a few stories.
Our milestone was also filling the calander on the same day, pretty good day all round.

Attended an evening event at a beautiful wetlands park.
Was nice to have an event a bit closer to us, so we made an effort to attend.
There were lovely frog cupcakes and other frog snacks.
After a few days of illness it was great to get out for a short time and catch up with caching friends.
We even found a cache or two in the area before heading home to bed.

Not posting a photo of us as there are other people in it.
Have included a photo from the entrance to the wetlands.

Thanks for the cache.

I attended the Leap Year Event run by MajuraHathi. It was held after dark and it was raining so everyone was huddled under umbrella's and raincoats.

That said everyone enjoyed it, especially McPhan who arrived dressed appropriately in flippers, snorkel and life jacket. TFTC

5289. First on the 29th, so nice to tick off a box. Also first I've ever done in flippers, snorkel and face mask. Seemed like a good idea at the time considering the forecast. And who would you have turned to to save you if it had flooded? I'll leave you to ponder that.

Great to see a large turn out although pretty difficult to make out faces under umbrellas. Well done MajuraHathi a success!

Thanks for the cache parislaura and the conclusion.

GC39M46 - London Event: Leaping for the 29th! 29/2/2012

This was a well attended event where we shared Munzees and were able to celebrate. The event was held in a pub that was conveniently the closest on to a Challenge Cache, that required the finder to have logged a cache on every calendar day of the year. A big group of us finished off this task today, logged the Challenge, and then attended the Pub for a well earned Pint!

Lucky, long wait to do it again Wink

21-Jul-12
We attended the Leap day Port pirie Cachers catch up GC3BBR1 in South Australia Port Pirie

20-Jul-12
Attended the Leap Year event in Perth, WA at Hillary's Marina (http://coord.info/GC3C8YW). A great get together organised by Everlasting. Was a great way to start the day. Found a few caches afterwards on the way to work ... two of them were FTF's!! Looking forward to the next one in 2016.

Our family of 3 attended GC3BX9R The Leap Year Worldwide Multi-Event (Hobart). We had not been caching for overly long (Oct 2011) but have found a wonderful community of fellow cachers here in Tassie.
We got to meet quite a few fellow cachers at the event including 2y'stassies, Dippedidooda, OldSaint, JABs, Budgietas & Whitewebs. I'm sure we met others but being new to the game we are still putting names to faces. Our 8 year old enjoyed herself very much meeting kids from other caching families whilst we olders chatted. Sorry no photos. Thanks for a great catch-up goes to JABs for organising. Clapping

27-Jun-12
Attended Leap Year Event organised by JABs GC3BX9R at the Regatta Grounds, Hobart. It was great to catch up with everyone new and old.

26-Jun-12
Slowly catching up on/working my way through GCA locationless caches... I was able to attend "The 3rd Leap" leap-day event almost 4 months ago http://coord.info/GC30M7F and mark off the most important day of the geocaching calendar Smile The cake was nice (and afterwards I discovered it was trackable too!) and it was good to catch up with some familiar faces and meet some new ones who I'd only known from cacher-names. I bought a nametag geocoin especially for the event and its been following me around (GC) caches ever since Smile

24-Jun-12
I attended the same Leap Year Event 2012 as did Dipp, JABs and OldSaint on the Queens Domain, Hobart

08-Apr-12
Not only did we attend a Leap Year event we jointly ran the biggest one in Australia - The Third Leap. We had 100 teams attend and everyone said it was one of the best events they had attended with prizes for all ages. Mrs80 is the one pictured at the table.

11-Mar-12
Well I attended a lunch event and evening event for the leap year and had a wonderful time catching up with friends and meeting new cachers. Lunch in the North and then a city dinner, it was a great day and great company.

06-Mar-12
The Riverwood event - GC3CBKT - which I also hosted, and thus HAD to attend.
We had a dozen manage to get there in the lousy weather (It rained the whole time), but that did not stop the 3 kids that came from playing on the playground equipment and managing to get a couple of injuries, the worst being a couple of breaks in her arm.
Of course that was probably because it was so slippery due to the rain.

05-Mar-12
Attended 2 events on the 29th Feb 2012.

Lithgow Walk GA4177, a 20kms walk around Lithgow picking up over a dozen GC,GCA caches. Plus a Trig and 2 frogs.

Leap Year World-wide multi Event GC3BY1H, to finish off the day attended this event with many new and old faces. Spent a good ammount of time chatting and catching up.

04-Mar-12
There was no formal event in our area so went caching with corunnaroad and we made our own fun leap year event! Found two caches GC3301J and GC3C7JW both worthy of a leap day smiley.

Hi parislaura
Attended the same Leap Year Event 2012 as did Dippi: Queens Domain, Hobart at 1800hrs.
We had a great time meeting old and new cachers and re-aquainting with old friends that we did not know were cachers.
I asked every woman there to marry me but was refused on each occasion; they should have been asking as it was a leap year.
My log for the event follows:
"Hi JABs
The 29th of Feb comes but once every four years so I just had to go caching today.
Worked hard this morning and then drove straight to a cache close to this event. Feelings of dejarvou (however you spell it) as I drove into the car park for the event.
And guess who I saw first: Those two northerners that beat me to a FTF on red tags PTPT. I tried to let their tyres down but they informed me I had picked the wrong car. The real owner turned up and caught me in the act and said go ahead, "I want to see how good the road side service is!"
How good an event for a day that comes by less than Father Christmas. But it felt like Christmas meeting everyone like we did. Glad to have caught up with Alby the semi-ladder driver and to find out that I know Prionotes. {Mynel should be happy as Daisy is really faithful.} Caching sure is a world of surprises.
Thanks for making this evening possible JABs. Great event.
So for my first leap year day since starting to cache, today I managed to get three GC Traditionals, 1 GCA Traditional, one moveable and an event. (Not to mention the refusals!)
Enjoyed your event and catching up with you tonight;
Thanks and cheers;
OldSaint."
Thanks for this cache and cheers;
OldSaint.

03-Mar-12
Attended "The Leap Year Worldwide Multi-Event (Hobart)" held 29th Feb, on the Queens Domain, Hobart from 6 - 7pm and organised by Jabs. It was a lovely evening and although a bit different to be so short (especially when I didn't get there till 6:45pm - but I'd been dealing with a huntsman in the car), was still nice just to have a quick chat and then go our separate ways. But after finding another nearby cache! Thanks for enabling us to get two for one with this locationless, parislaura.

03-Mar-12
When this Leap Year cache was listed, I pictured standing about in short sleeves watching the sun set. Try rugged up in raincoat in the dark, with an umbrella wishing I had worn my gumboots too. But fun all the same, although too wet to attempt a photo. TFTC!

02-Mar-12
So it was a GCA event as well..thats my second one... that nearly more GCA Geo events than GCA Caches....!!! I need to sort that out !!!

01-Mar-12
Great event thanks

01-Mar-12
I was away from home on this Leap Day, luckily this meant that I got to hang out with the very brave Canberra Geocachers at their Leap Year (lets all stand in the dark, in the rain) event.

By the time we got to Red Hill, and found our way up the muddy path, my Canberra guides had already helped me look for 17 caches and a swag of Munzees!

The only thing we forgot to do was to get a photo, probably because it was dark, and probably because you would not be able to see most peoples faces for the umbrellas they were hiding behind. I have lots of photo's of Frogs though!

Thanks for local place to share these great events!

01-Mar-12
A great time was had by all at the Leap-day Port Pirie Cachers Catchup (Event Cache)GC3BBR1, at the Family Hotel Pt Pirie... With some caching before and after in the continuing rain made for some fun finds and some very wet bodies..

Not only did I attend a leap year event, I established one for the cachers of Brisbane, with co-host Ghostgums. A well attended event that drew more than 50 people into the wee area that was set aside in the pub. Lucky we're a well behaved mob... Mr. Green

Event details can be found at GC3A6Y0.

Attended the Springwood event GC3BY1H. Originally planned for a local park, the organiser moved it to her home when torrential rain made an outdoor event a bad idea. Huge turnout, got to chat to old friends & meet a few new ones.

Attaching a group photo of the event, I'm somewhere in the middle

As a co-organiser with 80degrees of The 3rd Leap event (GC30M7F) in Fairfield, I thought I'd probably better attend Wink. It really was a fantastic event (even if I do say so myself) Clapping and we ended up with exactly 100 teams in attendance, and around 130-140 people in total Surprised.

My only regret was that I didn't get around to say "g'day" to everyone, including some of the 'big' names of Victorian/Australian caching Embarassed. That's the way it goes sometimes I guess and hopefully I'll catch up with them in future.

Many thanks for 'placing' this added extra to the 2012 leap day parislaura Very Happy.

A family vote decided an early rise to allow us to attend the Leap Year 2012 event at Dome Cafe, Hillarys, WA which was kindly organised by Everlasting. THough we were short on time, it was nice to say hello to some cachers we have now met a few times and also meet some new (to us) cachers, including 2 travelling cachers.

We didn't take any pictures as we were busy getting our Munzee name tags scanned. Luckily for us, Keego & Chil did.

Well it would have been difficult not to mention very rude of me not to attend my own event.

Lithgow Walk
GA4177
McKellars Park, NSW

A great time was had by all present if somewhat wet at the end of the 20km walk. The first half of the walk turned out to be near perfect, cool and dry but the last half, well let's say that the weather was not so kind and made up for the first half.

Not a formal event as none on in our area but a caching day with fellow cacher so I figure that counts. It was a shame there wasn't an event in our area as there were plenty of people caching today according to the logs. Found 2 caches-GC 3301J and GC 3C7JW. Great fun at both as they were well camoed.

GC395JF Take the Leap...Have a Snag Event in Bendigo. Laughing
We hosted a Leap Year event here in Bendigo - A sausage sizzle in the rain.
We had a great turnout, went through 70 snags, 4 loaves of bread and 12 onions. Rolling Eyes

We had some new faces turn up, which is always great. Clapping
Have attached a group photo as well. Dancing

From lunch to tea!
Even more people attended this meal than at lunch.
Awesome fun and it was great talking with so many experienced cachers, who are all very generous with their time and knowledge when helping newer cachers to learn! Very Happy

We attended "The Leap Year Worldwide Multi-Event (Hobart)" held on the Queens Domain, Hobart from 6pm. It was great to catchup with other geocachers, especially some we have not met before or haven't seen for some time. A great informal gathering.
