Description

Most people would have heard of the story of Aron Ralston, who was canyoning alone in Blue John Canyon, Utah, USA, in 2003, when his arm got pinned by a falling rock.

All geocachers would know that there are 60 Minutes in a Degree, (as there are 60 Seconds in a Minute), and obviously 60 Minutes in an Hour. So this virtual is about the length of time (127 hours), and the way Aron's arm was trapped - between a Rock and a Hard Place. You will be able to log a Find in ONE or more of the following three ways.

1/ Probably the hardest way for the average geocacher to log a Find is to find a geocache 127º offset from their home coordinates !!! This may worked out by, a) Adding, or Subtracting 127º from either the Latitude, OR the Longitude of your home coords. It will take you somewhere the other side of the earth, and probably into another hemisphere! And then search along the respective Latitude or Longitude or a cache to find, with a +/- ½º allowance either side of the appropriate search. Or, b) Finding a cache that is 14,137km away from home, with a +/- 50km allowance either side. (My maths: Earth circumference = 40,075km (360º), so 1º = 111.3km, and 127º = 14,137km)

2/ Find a cache (or have an active, placed cache) with the Title of the cache using, "Between a Rock and a …" Once that cache is logged as Found it won't be able to be used again for another Found log, but the Cache Owner would still be able to claim it as OWNED.

3/ Find a cache that has an Additional Hint, or as part of the description in cache info the phrase, "Between a Rock and a …". (Owners of such a cache won't be able to log an OWNED for this option of logging a Find). Once Found that particular cache won't be able to be claimed as a Find again.

So, in your Found log (or Note) please state which option you are selecting to claim your find. If using 1/ please use some coordinate close to your home (nearest cross street, etc), and give the GC code, Name of the cache, the Distance your cache page says the cache is from your home, and the Date you found that cache. For 2/ or 3/ please include the GC code of the cache you have found, its' Name, and the Date you found it.

The first person able to claim all THREE options, and have cached for 127 hours (FIVE consecutive days) will be given the opportunity of having my 'Lurch' (Addams Family) prop of 'Thing' sent to you! (Yeah, I had 10" platform shoes to aid my 185cm height! and had shaved my beard off, which noone knew I'd done, so most of my workmates didn't recognise me!)

ALWAYS let someone know where you will be going caching!

Congratulations for the following First-to-Finds

I loaded the main page and saw an image for this cache in the gallery at the bottom. The cache name got me curious so I checked it out. This is interesting. Turns out I satisfy conditions for 1b. I nearly made it for 1a at 126.45°.. so close! I don't qualify for 2. I'm very sure I qualify for 3 but I can't remember the caches.

My GC home coordinates have remained the same since I joined, a bush location near where I used to live. I've moved since I joined GC but I've never changed the coordinates as they are still close.

I have 4 cache finds in two countries with a distance from home at 14,137km +/- 50km.

The closest one to the target is 14135.8km in Israel.
GC2KF7B Sea of Galilee and the Hot Springs

I don't know where to start about that trip other than it was "unforgettable". Gun fire and a petrol bomb landing 5m away from my cab will do that. I was there in 2013 when the Syrian war was at full-noise. There were virtually no tourists in this region during the time I was there. I got close to the Syrian border via Golan Heights. I remember the northern border being covered in mines. I was kind-of working and kind-of not so I wasn't solo for a lot of the time I was in that region which made things more challenging. Lots of memories flooding in and not all good haha. I just remembered nearly punching-on with an Israeli soldier in a town called Elat in the south of the country because he thought it was okay to steal my breakfast. I managed to find a few caches which was great. Unfortunately I couldn't get one when in Palestine. I think they only had 4 at the time and I had other priorities in that part of the journey. I may return one day. An interesting note about the above cache is when standing on dry ground at GZ you are 200+m BELOW sea level. Thanks for the cache.

My log for GC3AQXC from 26 August '12 says it all. Mr the Morris and I wandered off from our group of riders for a couple of quick cache finds on top of Mt Alexander near Bendigo. Like the rocks is the movie, this area also has many large and treacherous rocks that could easily trap an unwary climber.

We found a cache called "Pull" GC3FK1V a few days ago on Lake Macquarie and the hint is "Between a rock and a hard place".
We have now claimed options 2 and 3. We now need to work on option 1.

We found a cache called "Between a rock and a hard place", GA6330, on 5th Jan 2016. This cache is in Dubbo and we manage to visit the area every couple of years. Mr Shifter watched Miss Shifter at the pool of the caravan park we were staying at while Mrs Shifter walked along the river and located several caches, this being one of them.
Mrs Shifter has read the book written by Aron Ralston, aptly titled "Between a Rock and a Hard Place", about his experience and it is very moving - well worth reading.

I managed to scoop this cache just out of Mildura in Victoria.

GC1C115 > Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Pretty sure that put me under Option 2.

Found (GC4Z238) 'Between a rock and a hard place' on 28/06/2016, pretty sure I can claim on this virtual then.

I found the cache 'Between a Rock and a High Place', GCT0D4 on 5 April 2009. It was an all day hike to get this one and a few others caches located in Namadgi National Park. One photo from log is attached showing the location.

Thanks for the locationless Grahame Cookie...

GA8276 - Beef Between the Rocks Smile

I suspect TOC named it as such to fit this cache

Soldiers Memorial - GC2BG4D - found on 12/7/14
We hadn't seen this cache before and it was because it was on the side bar, that's now the bottom bar, that it caught our attention.

We're doing Option 3 with the hint being 'Between a rock and a hard place". This was one of those caches where for some reason it took us threes goes to find but everyone else had no problems. Couldn't have asked for a better cache to earn a bonus smilie with. This cache has since been archived.

When we "found" this cache & it's brother we initially thought "easy peasy" as we'd found GC3NBEV "Between a Rock and a Huge Rock" on 29/8/14. Then we discovered that one had already been claimed so it was back to the drawing board. All we can say is thank goodness GSAK organises our endeavours so diligently as with just a little searching we came up with 2 caches that include the necessary words as part of the hint. What's more one's a GC & the other's a GCA.
So for this find we'll go with option 3 & nominate GA1111 "ME AND ER BRIDGE" found on 7/9/14 which includes the hint "BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE".
As for the streak, well we couldn't even claim 12 consecutive hours! Even cachers have to sleep. Even our best consecutive days streak is only a measly 26 days. TFTL Grahame Cookie.

Found it JABs found Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Sunday, 15 January 2012Tasmania, Australia SW SW 17.9 km from your home location

A great drive by on the way home, sometimes it is just nice to pull over find the cache and head on your way with so much as a gps in hand. Thanks for making us stop. Funny seeing only a couple of large boulders and no others near by.
JABs.

I can log this cache which I found doing some random stuff looking for GCA caches not in Australia. I think you should change this one to the cache type "Locationless" rather than Virtual Cookie so more people can find it!

My Claim - GC1YWV2 Traditional Cache Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Greetings from central Wisconsin, USA! We will be visiting Perth and Sydney in late November / early December, 2013 and have been virtually exploring Australian caches. That led to this one, which is our first Down Under log.

We found GC40WA3 CCC-Camp Mountain on June 8, 2013. It is in northern Wisconsin, USA, and is at a historical plaque commemorating the civil service program for American young men during the Great Depression of the 1930's. The hint for this cache reads, "Face the sign, look at the right post, Between a "rock" and a "hard place"- this cache is at ground level, it is not burried, but almost buried with a rock over it.". This should qualify as a Find for this virtual in the 3rd logging category.

We are looking forward to logging more caches during our visit!

On 8th September 2012, we FOUND the cache with the TITLE "GC3NBEV Between a Rock and a Huge Rock" At Trevallyn, Tasmania, Australia" at S 41° 26.624 E 147° 06.478

Hopefully this qualifies for option two. Thanks for organising the locationless cache Grahame Cookie

GC22Z3D - Redbank, found by me on 7 January 2011 - option (3) claim.

I was flicking randomly around the GCA site (instead of actually logging my weekend finds Embarassed ) & noticed this locationless.

I've found a number of caches with that phrase in either the cache notes or the hints. Redbank is the one I remember clearest, probably because it was so well disguied, it took a long time to find!

And as for how many days I've been 'stuck' caching - my 115 day streak recently came to an end in mid September, so not quite 127 days Very Happy .

On the 22-4-11 I had an interesting co-FTF on GC2TAXD - RIP WOZ.
Now archived, the hint is "Between a rock and a hard place."

I believe this qualifies me for option three. Smile

In relation to the film 127 hours I have a T-shirt (see pic) entitled "127 seconds". It made me laugh enough to buy it. Laughing

14-Sep-12
On 17 June 2011 we FOUND the cache with the TITLE "GC1A837 Between A Rock And . . ." at S 42° 53.818 E 147° 14.921 on the slopes of Mount Wellington, Hobart, Tasmania.

In our log we stated "A second find on our loop walk of some Mt Wellington tracks. It took some time for our GPS to settle down and when it did, it had us looking too high up the slope. It took us about 30 minutes before we eventually stumbled across the cache. The area has so many possible hiding spots - systemmatic searching is essential to success."

Hence we will log this cache under the second option. TFTC Grahame Cookie

See how far you have to go to find a "Hard Place"!
