Description

This cache is situated at Lake Mikany, a drinking water catchment and freshwater fishery close to the townships of Smithton and Stanley. It is open to the public for fishing and is one of the lesser known inland waters in Tasmania.

There is a boat ramp from which manual or electric powered boats only may be launched (no combustion engines!) There are no toilets or other facilities.

A road leading off the carpark runs around the lake and onto the island, but access is blocked by a gate, which was locked when we were there. If this is the case, you will need to walk. It took us 20 minutes to walk to the island, a pleasant stroll around the lake on a good, flat gravel road.

(Alternatively, if you have a kayak, you could go for a quick paddle across!)

The cache is stocked with handmade Happy Fishies. A fair bit of effort went into making them, so it'd be nice if you could show appreciation by leaving something nice in return. If you have nothing to swap, I don't mind if you take one anyway as a souvenir, but I won't be restocking this cache very often.

I hope you enjoy my cache. Thank you!

I grew up just up the road from this place so it was a nice surprise to discover that there was a geocache here. It's a very beautiful place - the CO's photo really doesn't do it justice so I attached one of my own below!

After a wee bit of bush bashing I found the cache exactly as described and still in excellent condition even after these past few years!

Definitely come and walk here even if you don't want to clamber through undergrowth. The bush bashing is only the last few metres nd the path around the lake is clear, flat and wide. It's unfortunately not wheelchair accessible due to the bollards at the start but it is a very easy and relaxing walk!

totally loved this place and the beautiful walk in the sunshine. when we arrived at the other end however we were greeted by scrub and mounds of tree waste. this made it very hard to access the scrub behind and to find any sort of track so it was pure Bush bashing to find this one. once found tho we were pleasently surprised to find it still well stocked.

Fished Mikany many times nice spot our second find on our first day of geocaching

Would have been a much shorter hike if the gate had been unlocked but at least the rain held off. Did a bit of bush bashing near GZ and made a quick find. Lots of swans on the lake today and a couple of people fly fishing back near the parking area - not sure if they were catching anything though. TFTC

Another top notch cache and hide by Hookline. Lovely spot out here and certainly brought back lots of memories having fished here 40 yrs ago when first starting work up this way. I did catch a couple of trout too...down the southern end. If this cache ever gets muggled...I will definitely eat my hat. Cache is still in pristine condition in it's easy to get to spot...but great hide. A ripper spot out here...so many thanks Hookline...thoroughly enjoyed the hunt...TFTEC..Cheers.

Found this cache as part of my and Geo Son E's caching and soccer trip to Burnie. Geo Kid E was playing in a regional cup in Burnie, so we left early and had a great time caching across to Marrawah and back through Burnie and Ulverstone areas.

Thank you for the cache

Nice walk around the lake, and a great cache

Had a nice walk to find this one. Wasn't sure if we were supposed to be doing some bush bashing or not, but after a few minutes of thinking we had gone in too far, Mr.B called out that he had found it! My second ever cache Clapping I am pretty excited as you can tell. TFTC!

While staying at Stanley in the Geovan we had this and several other caches on our to do list.

It was nice to come to an area not visited before and today was a beautiful day we saw black swans swimming on the lake.

A pleasant walk to Gz where we made a quick find. The contents of the cache were very creative but with no suitable swaps admired them and returned them to the cache.

Thanks hookline for bring us here and for the cache.

Hi hookline
What a great cache this turned out to be.
Have never been here before but will return with the fly rod - thank you - totally enjoyed the experience, even if the walking distance gets a little "extended" from what first appears on the GPS.
Had no trouble finding the cache once at GZ.
Logged and replaced the cache at 0920hrs.
Saw a few rise and loved it! But the best part of the experience was seeing a big eagle flying over head - awesome!
TFTC and cheers
Oldsaint.

Great day for the pleasant walk to this cache. Once on the island Mr Beetle bush bashed the short distance to the cache while I stayed in the nice safe clear area!! Thanks.

We come to Circular Head quite often to visit relatives and friends but never knew this lovely place existed. It was easy to access up to the gate and then a very pleasant walk around part of the lake to get to the "island". The views of the lake and surrounds from different directions were great, especially with the heads on the reeds starting to change to a russet brown colour. Once near GZ it was a small scramble to get over some dumped dirt and forest litter to get to GZ. Accurate coordinates and the hint led to a quick find. The cache and contents were in good condition. The real gem of this cache were the contents. Hookline is well known for her carefully crafted items placed into caches and this is no exception. They are great. Deciding what to swap was very difficult but in the end we left a green turtle and took a delightful red crochet fish. Thanks Hookline for bringing us to a great location and for the wonderfully stocked cache. A cache good for the soul.

A nice stroll on a beautiful afternoon. Certainly a well stocked cache. We too left them where they were. Took pathtags and left a fish and a flamingo. Thanks Hookline for moving the moveable. Will look out for it tomorrow. TFTC.

I was really attracted to visit this cache partly because it was unfound so I'd see a reminder if I looked at the GCA site, but particularly the handmade fishies. I had a swap, but it wasn't fishie themed, so when I got there and they were so cute all together there in the cache, I didn't have the heart to take one. A couple of days ago I arranged for Mum and I to visit a friend at Edgcumbe Beach today, so from there, we were definitely in the area! A great cache, and the appeal of the fishies really did lure me there. They were gorgeous too. Thanks for the top cache, hookline, it's a lovely spot as well.
