Description
A cache not far off the South Wellington track.
This is a summit walk where conditions can rapidly change. It follows a track marked by stakes and cairns which are readily apparent in clear visibility but can be much more difficult to follow in poor weather. Also be prepared with appropriate gear for the alpine environment.
Park at the Pinnacle near the start of the Zig-Zag track, close to the communication tower. Head off along the gravel track for about 140m (enjoy it) before turning at the sign for the South Wellington track which branches cross country, following metal stakes. Sturdy shoes are required as the track is a bit rocky and can be wet.
The marked route heads southwest initially then swings south, rising and dropping over a small ridge after about a km. Here you will reach a signed junction to the Rocking Stone. It will take about 1/2 hr to reach the junction.
Rocking Stone junction : S42 54.489 E147 13.914
From the junction follow the path which is marked by cairns to the Rocking Stone. It will only take 5 - 10 minutes.
Cache is right under the rocking stone and is a round Tupperware container painted black. Access from the S or SW side.

Logs
I ventured out across to South Wellington with the temperature around 3 degrees and the wind blowing at around 30km/h.
I was starting to think I may have come here on a bad day but as it turned out, the day got better.
I was happy that the cloud cover stayed above me and I didn't get wet.
Once I got nearer, I did some Swampy caching and found a track to take me to the Rocking Stone.
Cache was found quickly once I discounted the bad directions from my phone.
Cache is good condition and last found well over a year ago.
Now onward to my cache for a maintenance check and further afield for 2 other finds.
Thanks for the cache Dippy!
Walked 9.72 kms and was home by 2.30, so perfect!

Found today on a cracking walk with members from fellow geocachers stainless-steel-rat, gooseandegg, membsec and Lil Rafa.
After 'attending' the event cache GA11318 GZ, 7 intrepid walkers set off a little after 10am in rather cold and windy conditions. Some of the rocky outcrops along the way gave welcome shelter. By the time we'd reached rocking stone, circulation had generally returned to fingers and faces, and coats were being removed. It was most pleasant at GZ, and the views from the general area are stunning.
I'd not previously been here before, so thanks for a reason to come.
A great day out; with excellent company.

We started about 6.15pm and the trek out was longer than anticipated as we stopped to soak up the view and take lots of photos. We arrived at GZ around 7pm and with a quick find took lots more photos and enjoyed the stunning views again. The dark skies made the light very interesting.
Without all the stops we made it back quickly so decided to grab a GC that was only 100m off the track, back at the car around 7.50pm.
Thanks dippy for placing this cache in such a spectacular location, and for taking me (again) to a place I would never have visited without geocaching.
A quick thanks to whitwebbs for the replacement cache.

Its a short drive to the mountain but by the time we start our walk its already gone 6 and my idea of a quick walk to GZ are soon proved wrong, this only added to the fact that Goose didnt think we were going up the mountain today, it looks like the rat has bitten off to much again
What we had been thinking was going to be a 20-30 minute walk ended up taking an hour, but this included lots of stopping to take in the wonderful views tonight. At GZ it was a quick find by Goose and we were soon adding our names to the log.
It was a far faster walk back to the car in part due to us not taking many pictures and also we wanted to get back before the weather changed or it got dark, since we had made good time we called in and collected a GC cache on the way back and in the end we made it back to the car at 7.50.
This is a great example of a cache taking me to a location I had not been to before and I enjoyed the great views I was treated to.
Thanks for the cache Dippy
As we pulled up in the car park at the start of the Zig Zag track a snow shower blew through reinforcing the need for wet weather gear and good boots. We headed off as the sky brightened and were soon at the start of the South Wellington track. Mr y'stassie waited on the ridge 400m from GZ while Mrs y'stassie headed down a track that had become quite treacherous due to thick ice.
As she approached GZ she thought she could see the hide and sure enough on reaching GZ she could feel the container which seemed to be wedged firmly in the hide. Being a little bit shorter than average she couldn't see what the obstruction was and had to climb onto a nearby ledge. The obstruction turned out to be a large block of ice firmly gluing the container to the rock below. Several minutes were spent chiselling the cache free. A rather heavy continer was lifted down. On opening, the container held a large iceblock holding two zip lock bags. Several sharp taps on rocking stone were reqired to free the bags. The bags also contained ice blocks with an array of trapped objects. When freed the log book was very soggy and just signable. Ice was removed from all containers and they and the ojects in them were wiped out so they were as dry as possiblle under the conditions. After replacing the contents the cache was returned to its hide and its cover put back in place. Mrs y'stassie then turned to head back and was dismayed to see a very heavy snow squall heading her way. By the time she had picked her way carefully back to the ridge and Mr y'stassie the visibility had dropped markedly. At times we could only see one marker ahead. Fortunately Mr y'stassie had way marked every second marker pole and we were able to find our way safely back. As the squall reached us we were 80m from the large communications tower but could not see it until we were 50m away. Despite the weather changes it was a great walk and a thrill to have at last found this cache.
Thanks for another great adventure Dippy we loved the experience. Unfortunately the log book will need replacing.
Ice on the puddles, a biting breeze, and fog/cloud rolling over from time to time, but we still got some great views from southwest to south east.
The stone itself was much smaller than I had expected.
An easy find for my colleagu, who just walked up and grabbed it without me telling him anything about it.
Thanks, Dippy.
After getting snowed off the mountain yesterday, I returned to collect this cache today.
It's been a long time since I've walked in the snow, but found it quite exhilerating to do so.
Some great views today and enjoyed a chat with a father and his two daughters at the Rocking Stone Sign.
At one stage I thought it might snow again as heavy cloud came over; but it did not eventuate.
Had a quick find at GZ; logging the cache at 1339hrs.
This makes my 3027th overall find; comprising 1252 GCA finds and 1775 GC finds.
A great cache. Thanks for taking me to a spot with such spectacular views.
Cheers OldSaint.
Last night Darling Daughter had here 18th birthday party so I thought she and her friends would be sleeping in. With that in mind I planed to get up nice and early and go to the "Rocking Stone" and take some sunrise photos.
This morning up at 5:30am dressed and ready to go but.
Mr "D" can you take me into town at 8:00? Came a request from one of the party goers who was helping drive the porcelain bus.
After the initial delay the sun was up and the clouds had started to roll in on the VERY cold and VERY windy mountain.
After reading the description I managed to walk to and find the cache without the use of any navigation equipment at all. A nice easy find.
As I expected due to cloud the views weren't the best but the ice in the puddles on the way made for some interesting scenery and a lovely walk.
