Description

One of a series of virtual cache visits to the centre of Australia, its states and mainland territories.

The thing I really like about the Geocaching Australia site is that it allows 'unusual' caches that aren't permitted on the International site.  A recent GCA find that had me confused for a while got me thinking about a series that gets to the heart of our great nation and brings a smile(y) to those who find it.

The rules of the caches in this series are simple  find the cache, log your find.  That's it.

So, let's go.

Centre of Queensland

According to the Geoscience Australia website, the geographical centre of Queensland is located 17km north-west of Muttaburra.  The area is also famous from an archaeological perspective as the region was once a pre-historic inland sea. A wealth of fossilized remains has been uncovered here, and when a previously undiscovered species was found, it was became known as the Muttaburrasaurus.

The Google Maps view of the centre of Queensland looks something like this:

The centre of Queensland

Position on SF55-09 Muttaburra 1:250 000 and 7753 Culloden 1:100 000 scale maps.

If you decide to journey to any of the locations in this series, please remember:

  • Travel in outback Australia can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take.
  • Be aware of private property restrictions — 'private' means exactly that!
  • Do not risk your life to log a find on any of the caches in this series.

Also, keep your eye out for one of these 7 metre long locals:

We are off on a trip to the Birdsville Races and then across to Queensland - the plan is for about 6 weeks of travel - all going well.

Week 1 we have travelled from Portland to Farrell's Flat near Clare.
Week 2 was Clare to Port Augusta.
Week 3 Port Augusta to Birdsville.
Week 4 Birdsville to Aramac
Day 33 and we are in Muttaburra and heading to Longreach for QOGM. We knew there had to be a cache here.

Thanks for contributing to our holiday EuDes

I've been closer than some and further than others but thanks for the virtual visit to this big, beautiful state. Good to know where this centre is. Clapping

13-Mar-22
This is a fun little aspirational series. We will add these to the list of places to attempt to visit in the future, although a few will be pretty difficult.

Whole lot of nothing at this spot. Though we did wonder if the local town has any connection to the Muttaburrasaurus.

30-Jul-21
While recovering from a workout via zoom here, opened the app and went, too easy

09-Nov-20
It is great to be able to see the geographic centres of each state. I have only visited vic and tas in person.
Great contrasts in colour.
Thanks eudes.

07-Nov-20
Well I have completed this virtual tour to the heart of the matter in QLD. Thanks for entertaining me today EuDes. ClappingClapping

28-May-20
The closest town I've been to this one is Longreach, which only looks down the road and around the corner LaughingLaughing . These are really making me think about the centres of each state, something haven't thought about before. TFTC Smile

26-May-20
Not only did we virtually visit this area, but we also stayed there for a while to have some car repairs completed.
And not only that but I also placed a GCA trad cache near the town while stuck there. Wink
We did some exploring before the breakdown and like others could not get close enough for a pic.
Thanks for the cache,
Roostaman.

After visiting many places in Australia ,Virtually that is ,we are in Queensland on our way home ,we have been close to this spot but it is now not access able as it is private property Clan Minotaur

Looking through caches that I could possibly find without leaving the comfort of my own home and these popped up. It was great fun visiting the centers Australia. I hope this is a correct way of logging these caches (Virtually visiting). If you are not happy with this method of logging, please let me know so I delete my logs. TFTC's Very Happy

Drove out along the road to get as close as possible, but property has been sold and there is no entry. But found this wonderful sign in town.

I am camped in Muttaburra, close enough to log this cache as others have done, but I have been a lot closer back in 1980 when visiting my brother when he worked as a jackaroo on "Maroomba Station". which is not far from "Culloden". I guess this will count as a find. TFTC.

06-Jul-18
I am not that far from that location. In Muttaburra for a couple of days.

29-Apr-18
While driving from Longreach to Muttaburra on Anzac eve I thought about just how close we were. So here is my log to commemorate the occasion.

14-Nov-17
Well, apparently, just by being here, I can log that I was here. So, here I am (actually, was pretty close a few weeks ago while in Muttaburra)

Enjoying my journey around Australia courtesy of Google earth and geoscience Australia. Thanks for an interesting series. I have not even been close to this area on my physical journey around Australia. Thanks EuDes

18-Aug-15
Staying in Longreach for a couple of days I figured his was the time to log this cache. Before going on this holiday I checked what caches are along the way & a waymark came up http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WMC2HX_Centre_of_Queensland_Australia - which I’m unable to do to the restricted time & asking the owner of property. So it’s great to log this 1 Smile - thanks

We didn't quite get to the heart of the matter in this case but did manage to get within about 7km while driving from Longreach to Hughenden:D

The country roundabout looks very dry yet the cattle look nice and plump Laughing

Many thanks for this interesting cache EuDes ClappingDancing

Having recently got to the heart of the matter in our home state we thought it would be disrespectful not to do the virtual grand tour so to speak. However, as we're that way inclined & just love pouring over maps and fiddling with coordinates we gave ourselves the additional task of determining how close we've physically managed to get to these virtual locations over the years. We were quite surprised with the results as all 9 were well within the 100Km range.
The closest we can say we've got to the QLD heart would be 82Km or so on the A2 between Winton & Longreach, most recently in 2007. Having visited Lark Quarry twice we'll have to schedule a visit to Muttaburra. TFTV EuDes.

09-Oct-13

I haven't driven as close to this central spot as I thought -- coming down from Darwin, on my way to Cairns, I drove through Hughenden . . . quite a few years ago.

However, in the 1990s I bought I property in Queensland, built a house there, and owned it as a kind of 'holiday house' for many years. But mostly I rented it. Now I've given it to my son, so my days as a Queensland landowner are over . . .

But that's my direct connection to 'the Heart' of Queensland . . .

My son and my grandchildren live there. My grandchildren were born and raised there, so are true Queenslanders.

Many thanks to EuDes for the Virtual!

Another of the heart of the matter caches that you simply need to find the cache page? Logged as found.

Did the virtual search. Had a very good look at Google Earth. What a very good idea for a series. Also the point that is the furtherest from any cost line in Australia (the mainland) is located at Eromanga

03-Oct-13
It is interesting that there are five mathematical models listed on the Geoscience Australia website for determining the centre of Australia (and these locations are spread quite widely), yet there is only one (not disclosed) method for each of the states and territories. We wondered what the spread might be like if the five models were applied to Queensland. This is certainly an unusual series of caches but, as the cache owner states, GA permits unusual caches. Even when flying, we have not come within 500km of this location. Hence we have enjoyed the virtual visit courtesy of Google Earth and Geoscience Australia. Thanks for a different type of cache EuDes.

01-Oct-13
I checked with Vera & Stan who verified the location of this one. Great views of distant jump ups.

29-Sep-13
Well that is an interesting journey. I am all for new adventures and this one is unusual to say the least. Amazing really what you can see on Google Earth!
Thanks for the great idea, loved it.

27-Sep-13
I nearly didn't have the virtual strength to log this one as I thought my "ex-mother-in-law" was on your cache description page but with another virtual look I saw that it was not a Terrasaurus Rex and continued on my virtual path to a find!
TFTC and cheers

Strange that you don't have to visit the site. I've never been to Queensland and so it's funny that I can claim a cache find there.

Well I've found this virtual cache page .. so I guess by the difficulty and terrain rating I can now log it. So I shall.

Oh, and GCA find #300 for me TFTC! DancingDancing

763. Well it is definitely unusual, but no less unusual than the baby cache. And does teach one something - look outside the box.... Not the normal way for cachers I guess Razz

TFTC and the split.
