Description

Lighthouses of QLD - Bulwer Island Light

The station was established in 1909. The current light was lit in 1912, as the rear light of a pair of leading lights at the mouth of Brisbane River. Made of hardwood frame clad with corrugated iron, it was the eight and last of its kind to be constructed, the first seven being Little Sea Hill Light, Grassy Hill Light, Goods Island Light, Bay Rock Light, Old Caloundra Head Light, North Point Hummock Light (demolished) and Gatcombe Head Light (demolished). In 1983 the lighthouse was replaced by a skeletal tower, and relocated to the Queensland Maritime Museum. The original location is now occupied by an oil refinery.

The tower went through restoration in 2005, replacing timber and rotted windowsills. The ground level cover was also painted, and access was improved.

Height: 16 metres

So a great weekend so far! Friday night I checked the Ipswich Council website to see if Flinders Peak was open and it was so that was Saturday sorted. An excellent hike and successful day of geocaching followed by beer and an amazing curry (and more beer haha). Today started with a very successful CITO Event and some greats chats with likeminded geo-friends. Now I’m in Southbank to catch up with one of my nephews who is off to Europe soon and wants to chat about his planned adventures. I’ve been to Europe many times and each time has been filled with ‘firsts’ and unforgettable experiences. In fact, four years ago today I managed to get myself into a Russian occupied part of Moldova they call Transnistria, on the southern border of Ukraine. My nephew won’t be going there though. My style of adventuring is very different to most people.

I arrived at Southbank over an hour early to spend some time looking around. I visited an Adventure Lab waypoint and some Waymarks. I tried for a GC cache but a muggle was sitting literally at GZ. How dare someone leave their home to go outdoors and inconvenience me haha. I saw this GCA Virtual cache and was initially puzzled. I used to work on Bulwer Island and I don’t remember a lighthouse….. and…. this is not Bulwer Island! Further reading the description helped me understand the situation. It’s nice out here today and I love lighthouses, thanks for the cache Smile

There was a flash mob event on the bridge today and we were a bit early so we had time to check out the maritime museum from above as we strolled past. I used to have one of the old life preserver rings off the old tug Forceful which is in there.

I wandered over before meeting friends for a run.

I have passed this lighthouse countless times. Ten years ago when they were draining and repairing the dry dock, I worked nearby and used to come down at lunchtimes to watch the truckloads of silt being removed

Seeka and I found this when we walked across the Goodwill bridge after visiting the Botanic Gardens and on our way home to the bus stop. I must say a weekday afternoon is a bad time to actually stop on the bridge to take photos, everyone is in a rush home, or exercising. So with a break in the follow the sheep and keep to the left, I got a photo without making anyone angry.

We didn't have enough time to justify the admission for the maritime museum - although that in itself is well worth the visit. Instead we spotted it from the Goodwill Bridge which probably gave us a better view of the top of the light.

Both Samboo and Seeka are in this photo and while we were up there I have also included a photo of the Carpentaria Light Ship, which maybe should have a lighthouse cache all of its own. https://maritimemuseum.com.au/exhibitions/vessels/carpentaria-light/

Thanks for the cache.
