out for a high tide exploration of the mangroves in the kayak, and came upon the wreck by accident after following a path through the mangroves...remembered reading the cache description in the past so pleased to find the cache still loaded on the GPS...

but alas i have to agree with the last person - it appears to be no where to be seen at the described location, rather just large flakes of steel and lots of bigger holes? perhaps its floated away when released from the wreck?

#538: Finally found this one with the help of a local homeowner who was out on her deck watching us try to find the path to the GZ. She was very helpful and we found the cache a few moments later. What an interesting story this ship could tell.

Out on a quick mission with Trav007 & the kids. Great history lesson thank you! No.68 and 70 seem to have disappeared and new houses are down the drive. Easy going all the same and really quick find. TFTC Smile

1 day we should build it up and ship it outta there......YER RIGHT!!!!!... Nice location yet again, even in the rain. Thanx bud for the cache

29-May-10
Theres been a few changes in this area since the cache was laid
new houses gone up and still being built and getting to the remains of this vessel now involves walking on private land
with out a home owner telling me where the boat was I would never have found it.

29-May-10
Access between no,s 68 and 70, should be a walkway eventually if its not now.

Now this is what it's supposed to be about right? Appreciated the map to guide us in and then it was all on from there on in. Great spot for a cache and glad to have done this on a lovely summer's day - not sure this would have been so much fun a few months from now. TNLNSL TFTC

Today, after volunteering for the UN Paras drop mission I mounted a patrol to check on the "Battle of the Bridge" hotspots for General Glyn.
Having spent several hours in the wastelands devastated by the recent conflict I took the oportunity to take some R&R in this peaceful and unaffected zone.

I was confused about trespassing when accessing the reserve, but have since consulted Google maps and an now have attached a copy.
I had glanced at the description on my PDA but then left it in the car and was unsure just where to look. I recovered the PDA and cracked the clue before returning to make an easy find. I dunno how I missed it first try.
What a facinating bit of history lies here.

This find (1200th) was such a refreshing change from the dummed down micros proliferating these days.

Have made note to self to remember to keep gumboots in the car. Couldn't find the easy trail so just made our way through the swampy mess until we arrived at the hulk. No problems with the find but the shoes are a mess. Oh! the life of geocaching. TFTC

This was our second visit to this area, as last time I had brust a blood vessel in my leg (from walking a marathon) as wasn't quite up to the terrain... but this time no problem and eagerly crossed this one off the list. Great to find the cache (and even better to know leg was much improved)

11-Apr-09
Would never have ventured here and found this, so thanks for the adventure. Imagine it may be a bit trickier when all the sections are built on...

Further on my afternoon with Helefant, we arrived at Wreck Bay. Had a false start to find out way then tried another way and behold we found it. Really enjoyed reading about the history of how this came to be here. Will take a note of the book and have a read, as all this history is very interesting.

This was our second visit to the site. The first time we were not sure of exactly how to get through to where we assumed was GZ. A search on Google maps confirming the location sent us back more determined to get there. Not too much of a bush bash at all. Access might be a little harder in future as the surrounding land has "for sale" / "sold" signs up. Worth the visit, you'd never guess it was there!

This one is amazing - how do you find these places? Really enjoyed discovering this one. Well done Smile TFTC

Getting to the GZ was a fun trek. How did you ever find this, Glyn? Houses are springing up all over in this neighbourhood! Indiana Jill, Kayaknkiwi and I looked in all the usual (and unusual) places. Being aware of Glyn's style, we left nothing unturned. Thankful for the hint; it was spot on. Thanks for another great cache, Glyn!

3.15pm.Fascinating!!Hard to imagine on the Devonport run today but a great relic of Auckland Harbour history - and its brick making history. Well worth the venture into the unknown. Thanks Glyn. Oh, and "by the way" the pen ran out as we started to write and the logbook is a little damp. Otherwise all in great shape.

Wow! Never would have known about this place....
Took the bush bash route because it was the only way we could see, not too much problem though. Clever hide at GZ, took us a little while to locate.
Thanks for the cache and the fascinating history of the area Glyn

Wow, what a creepy wreck. Rumo likes such graveyards of old technology. Now, while logging the find, he finally has the time to read the description and to get the answer to "What the h*** are all these bricks doing here?"
Rala quickly located the box in its tricky hiding place after consulting the hint.

Out hunting with the inimitable XenaCommander on Splat the SV650 caching machine. This was our last for the day before the rain .. and forgotten rainsuits ended the day. This was a nice sneaky hide. Sniffed and pawed at all likely spots until XC being a crafty old salt uncovered the goods.
Signed of the log as the rain started so we bailed out and headed home to dry out and gloat over the days fun. Thanks Glyn for an interesting historical spot.

02-Dec-07
It seems TechnoKitten and XC have been on another Glyn cache hunt.. Having found 3 already we came here to what was our last for the day before rain called it off.
Parked Splat the cache machine nearby and walked into the nearly track. Nice to read the history of this area.
TK was using a newly found prod and XC was looking in likely places but to no avail... Check clues.. Hmmm its gotta be here. Start again.. TK already looked here but.... ah hah..
XC yells... FOUND!!! hehe..
Nice hide..
TK signed the log and I swapped Diabetes TB for Butterfly Lady Geocoin.

Thanks Glyn for another great day caching. We still have lots more of yours to do but I am sure we will get them all.
We are now soaked and going to take shelter at Daughter Commanderling and see Grandson Commanderling. (must be getting old)

If you give a 9-yr old a GPS you never see for dust. This is his 6th cache this morning and his enthusiasm has waned one iota, in fact, I think it has increased inversely proportional to my level of energy. Where do they get all that energy from. Had to play a PAF card here to be able to put my hands on the cache. What a great hidey-hole.

Many thanks to Mr Glyn for leading us (figuratively speaking)to this little remnant of maritime history. Clearly Glyn has researched the subject well and provided us with a most interesting background to the early days of Auckland and the Waitemata Harbour.

#786. Now that was fun(ny). Shame there wasn't anyone with me - they'd probably still be rolling around laughing. Imagine my surprise when instead of a grassy knoll my next step turned out to be thin air and I fell horizontally into the mangroves - straight out of a cartoon.
Not ideal terrain for shorts and sandals - came back looking like a pin cushion from the gorse.
Clever hide Glyn. TFTC.

Yes indeed, sprung by Tramper Ted and think I might have been muttering my thoughts aloud at this stage so good reason for TT to stand back and assess what sort of nutter goes there.

Very nice to finally meet an Auckland cacher, and not only an Auckland cacher, but the famed Tramper Ted! So, after a bit of chin wagging down to business with TT showing how it's done. Many thanks, I was thinking too hard and overlooked the obvious, would of got it though!

Very interesting to be able to "discover" such things, thank you very much glyn, a great cache and lots of good info in the description.

11.00am. We followed AGS who led us along the "scenic route"
We three looked together until AGS found it. That wreck is hard! I tested my head on it! We took the easy way out. Thank you. David & Geoff.

Parked the car, but no sign of an easy way in. However it looked like a short bush bash, so off I went. Arrived at ground zero, closely followed by Nodo and son. We did a joint search before I found the cunning hide.
The Nodo team then showed me the easy way back to the car Wink

Thanks for the cache!

Did the short bush bash cause we didn't find the other way. Approaching GZ we saw someone fossiking around the said item. Stood back a bit and thought what to do - shall we surprise him??? Yep looks like he's got a GPS!! Turned out to be the legendary ADV, back in Auckland keeping his numbers up. Had a good chat and found the cache too.

On emerging back to the car some locals came past and asked if we had been looking at the shipwreck. Said someone had told us about it (thanks Glyn), and they filled us in on a bit more history as well.

The route we used won't be possible much longer cause of all the sections being sold, but the 'proper' way should be a bit more obvious as time goes by. TFTC

Rumo and Rala are currently not able to do any geocaching. Maybe they will never be able to go geocaching again after what has happened on that particular night...

Well what a wet day, Rumo and Rala must be being sensible and watching TV on a day like this. So great to be FTF.

What an interesting piece of local history that I wouldn't have known unless Glyn had bought that local history book of his Smile. Interesting spot indeed.

Wonder how easy it will be to get too, once all the sections are built on here. Lets hope we will all still have access.
