4 October 2024 @4:18pmWent to replace cache, then found the dirtbags replacement behind the old one. So....We found a manky old cache container here and went straight into salvation mode putting together a new replacement cache. Then cat' shoved her hand in a little deeper at GZ and withdrew another container in much better condition. We then put what good bits were left of the old one in the newer one, along with our signatures, and shoved it back in its hidey hole taking the broken and rotten bits and bobs with us for disposal. [^]Later.... we read the hamfish's log. Sorry if we took any "history" from this hide. Found with catnap777 and the trusty rusty Holden Rodeo. Well we are feeling pretty proud of ourselves (and the Georig) for getting to these ones. This weekend was our first visit to The Little Desert and our first go at deep sand driving. We had the gear but not the experience making these caches among our greatest prizes on the weekend traipsing around The Little Desert and surrounding towns. We were originally lured to the border by a string of events and a set of solved "This is SA" puzzles, but having had a taste of deep sand 4x4 driving, we couldnt resist daring ourselves to delve a little deeper into the desert. TFTC Beaker's Bunch.
4 October 2024 16:16 dalerious and I detoured a round about way, but you have to do that to access the cache.Thank you to the dirtbags who replaced the container for this one.Thank you Beaker's Bunch for placing the cache.dalerious and I were on the road again and this week we were heading to Dimboola and beyond chasing specific caches and D/T attributes of course. We saw these puzzles on the map and they were situated in the Little Desert, how perfect is that.We hadn't done alot of sand driving before, but we were well prepared for the journey and experience. All the tracks were accessible and our vehicle handled the conditions admirably. This area of the State is awesome. This country is awesome. My goodness we live in a beautiful part of the planet. The wildflowers were out on show but strangely not many reptiles. It was on the colder side though, and we did get showers every now and again. We definitely don't need an excuse to visit the Desert country again in the future.
Wasn't even trying to find a cache. Just saw it out in the open.Hid it away a bit better.
some good news:we found the original cacheit looks like the dirtbags must have replaced the missing cache when they visited a few years backbut we found the originalwe found it about an hours drive north awayup near hermans hillwe climbed the sand dune up the trig point and on a short wooden railing next to the trig point we saw a small sistema containera little cracked, a little weather-beaten we cracked it open: Timbos Tower it readwho knows how it got there, who knows why it was just sitting there in the openwe found the cache at the trig point and then headed southboundmade the walk out to the towernow the two caches sit side by sidereunited
Found after completing the “This is SA” series. Fun driving through the sand and a really interesting cache. Thanks!
Due to unforeseen circumstances Mr Smokey Bear will no longer be a part of Team Smokey Bear and will continue his adventures as "SmokeyBearOG".
So I'm relogging all previous finds under my new account.
Unfortunately this log will not show the original logging date.
**Thanks to -Beaker- for this adventure, looking forward to many more.**

Walked in through lovely scrub country. Plants are doing well. Thanks for the find.
We slipped and slid our way to the cache along the sandy track. A fun afternoon was had in little desert. TFTC
A quick sojourn off the highway had us in the thick of the hot sand. Nice to see the country looking healthy desertish here!

Came over to the 2019 mega in St Arnaud with Mogni. We where joined by jj52, Aussie M and M plus others at different times over the mega weekend. Many caches where found over the course of the 8 day trip. Targeting multi's on the way there and back plus the challenge trail in Mount Beckworth reserve. The creative trails around St Arnaud where the highlight of the trip.

Staying in St Arnaud for the week for the mega, the lovely Geoturtle37, Papi4506 and I decided to make a day trip over here to make some more smilies.
An interesting piece of history. Would have hated to be one of the spotters back then.
Thanks for the placing and maintaining this cache, Beaker's Bunch

This was a nice quick find in rapidly fading light for us this evening. It was the last one we had on our to do list, so pleased that we made it here. On the road that we took in, there was a muggle parked almost across the road, with his tent and dog only just off the side. Even when we came back, his vehicle was still parked in the same place. Very strange. This is an interesting place. The bunkers were certainly made to last but stick out a bit like a sore thumb out here, making them fairly obvious. Thanks for bringing them to our attention with this cache.
A quick and easy find to finish a day of caching through the Little Desert area. Thanks for bringing us to this interesting historical relic in the middle of nowhere.
Leaving my stop over in Dimbolla and doing a few around the area before heading west to find a few more.
Checked the map and worked out how to get into here, another test of the sand but not so bad on this section.
Another great piece of military history that I would not have visited if it wasn’t for our great CO’s to bring us out here.
Not sure if I would sit in a bunker with planes flying over head shooting the #### out of everything.
Thanks Beakers’s Bunch TFTC.

Not having a 4WD we had to walk in from the highway but well worth the effort. Very different to other parts of the Little Desert and interesting history. It rounded off our trip to the old RAAF base. Thanks Beaker's Bunch!

Out with Tritonz and Quarsar3671 on an epic road trip to Adelaide. We made the detour here being both admirers of little desert. A bit of a puzzle getting in however in arrival cache and location were well worth it. Awesome - this is what caching is all about! Thanks for bringing me here.
Heading towards Adelaide with Jacko83 , with just a few detours in the trusty Triton 4X4 picking up particular D/T's.
Heading up through the Little Desert we made our way across to check out Timbo's Tower and add our names to the cache log. We took in our surrounds , taking photos of the ole' bunker , then searched for the cache.

Off on a weekend road trip to Swan Hill, going the long way on my 1400km adventure to pick up a few new LGA's along the way as well as a few caches of interest.
This one was out west in a new LGA that I had not been to yet so I had to make the detour out here.
I wasn't too sure about going for this one as I hadn't tackled any of these sand tracks before in the Outback but I threw caution to the wind and headed in, it turned out that there was no problem at all making my way along these tracks to GZ and I was soon at the tower, a short search and I was soon signing the log.

Great piece of history. 4 wheel drive definitely helped in getting there. Thanks.
Fighting the urge to turn around due to a rain storm lurking on the horizon the direction we were travelling , we pushed on we hadn't traveled from the border for nothing , wow what a cool bit of history and so sad that these 2 bunkers aren't more documented as a place of interest

GoodLook wanted to head to St Arnaud for the events there and needed a 4WD......hence Harry was put back into service and we made the trip there and back without any mishaps
Considering that we spent around 3 hours in the Little Desert, playing in the sand, yet didn't get bogged at all that was impressive
Over 3 fun filled days we experienced some great countryside [^] and great caches , some fun times with the very friendly Victorians and just a few mosquitoes too
I had only 1 DNF over the 3 days (bloody nemesis caches!), attended 4 events and made 43 cache finds some of which near St Arnaud were just absolutely amazing! [^]
Harry got us in to this cache with ease, so finally it is off of my unfound list
We found a surprise in the cache that was just a tad illegal and so removed it!
Interesting history

A fun trip to the cache...it was great being in Kaye's 4WD again!
What an amazing 3 days spent with Locus Cache whilst on a girls caching trip!
We travelled from Adelaide to the lovely St Arnaud area to enjoy a weekend of fantastic events whilst finding a number of caches on the journey, in some spectacular locations...ohhh...and at times the conversations were so amusing we just couldn't stop laughing!! haha [:o)]
Some of the stand out moments included driving into the Little Desert National Park and turning a 1.5*T into a 5*Terrain! So instead of being there for a 30 minute cache, we went on a 3 hour unexpected adventure!!
We saw kangaroos, emus, lots of birds and a whole heap of water due to recent heavy rains.
On the Saturday we spent all day with the gorgeous micaparamedic...LOL...and we not only found some awesome caches, but we literally BOUNCED all around Kaye's car -Harry- as we ventured on the many bush tracks...we even had conversations about all sorts of fruit - pineapples, blueberries and cherry tomatoes to be precise!
All in all we attended 4 wonderful events this weekend, 3 in St Arnaud and even made it back in time to attend one of Freddo's very cool events in SA - GEOCACHING ROCKS!!! [:X]
Thanks for the cache -Beaker-!

Dr Owl was suggesting a weekend away to tackle some adventurous caches in a disputed area of Mexico and to spend some quality time with Muff1. Who was I to say no! Extensive use was made of the Muffmobile and Mrs Muff came along for the ride and to poke fun at our caching efforts.
Today Mr Muff1 was driving giving me a chance to relax and enjoy the views. Timbo's Tower was an impossible to reach dot on my maps, now it's a smilie!:) Interesting histroy.

The last day of Owl and Sushilord's epic adventure and the main aim was to clean out the Little Desert Park (for the fish) and the eastern end of the park (for Owl). The Muffs and their Muffmobile were conscripted and a very pleasant trip led to these mysterious structures. Owl missed the explanation at the time, being intent on finding a cache, but was interested in the story now she's logging it.

Found while exploring the area. Found this site after visiting the aerodrome and also spoke to one of the committee members who looks after things. Good to get some extra details from a local. This was the first cache I have found when not actually looking for them. TFTC. Took geocoin as a memento.
Heading home, east to west and decided to drive through this way to get away from the rat-race heading back to SA .
It was drizzling when we got here and this area has been wiped out by fire as well, but at least the cache here was safe, with not a mark on it .

It was back to the highway after this find, as it was getting late in the day and we had a few hundred km's to cover before home [)].

When I was researching our return journey from the Pyrenees back to Adelaide, I decided that travelling through the Little Desert would be infinitely better than the blacktop, especially on the Easter LWE. The map I had had some “WWII Bunkers” marked on it, but their actual location wasn’t immediately apparent.
Luckily, there was a cache here to direct us straight onto them [^]. I didn’t read the cache notes at the time, and wondered what purpose they served. Their construction wasn’t right for ammunition storage, and I formed the opinion that they looked more like the Waiting Bays you find on places like grenade and HE ranges. I completely forgot the proximity to Nhill and the association it may have had with aerial gunnery.
Thanks to Beaker’s notes, I now realise what I was looking at, and it all makes sense.
Thanks for bringing us to a place that hold endless fascination, for me at least. I know – I need a life . TNLN, cheers Beaker

We took the adventure way into this cache. There is a new firebreak so we first decided to go and see where it went, do not try it without the four wheel drive. We arrived at the bunker and said hello to the nesting birds, had a look around the area and then decided we better look for what had initially bought us out here.
The cache was covered and with great co-ords we soon had our name in the log book. TN L 1 of our pathtags . TFTC

Was out at the little desert lodge today and had an opportunity to duck out and have a look at this interesting piece of local history. Really any excuse to catch up on some old WW II artifacts is great, a cache while I'm here as well is twice as good. Found after a little poking about and signed the log, TFTC.

Given that this was only a few km south of 'home', we decided to journey down to see if we could get to GZ after today's bushwalk east of here. Despite all our GPSrs showing major highways leading to the spot , no matter how much we tried to cajole Su into driving there (and no matter how much of a shot she gave it I might add ), there was no way this was going to be a drive by - until we employed the GeoPaj of course.
Back at the ranch, we picked up said ve-hickle which performed its task admirably and we finally arrived at GZ for the find, after a squiz at the hint , at 16:25 to pick up some more 'unloved' points.
An absolutely fascinating spot and a great journey to get there is well deserving of a fave point. It's caches like this that I use to describe caching to people.
TNLNSL, although a few of our geocoin had a visit to mark the occasion. Thanks Beaker's Bunch.

After finishing our Kiata - Trig Point loop bushwalk, followed by the REd Gum loop to pick up a couple of caches, we couldn't resist some reconnaissance on this one in the GeoSkoda. Having tried a couple of ways in, we looked at the sandy track which appeared to be the only remaining option and decided against. So it was back to the Nature Lodge to get the Eudes 4WD and try that track out. Sure enough the Pajero handled it easily - the Skoda would have been no chance, and we arrived at GZ to check out a piece of Australia's wartime history. Cache found at 4:25pm, and bunker inspected, we headed back to the lodge for the post bushwalk BBQ.

My GPS map had a road marked that ran west from the bitumen straight to GZ.
So this looked like a nice easy 500 metre detour
In fact I could see the twin towers from the highway [:)
The road never materialised !! [:o]
So it was back to plan B.
I had arrived on the hiighway via the Dahlenburgs Mill track and noticed another track running west that skirted the open fields.
Thank goodness I hadn't bothered to pump the tyres back up to highway pressures yet
Off I headed along more of the sandy tracks of the Little Desert NP.
I made it to the northern tower and parked the geomobile.
And while looking at the tower, noticed a likely cache hiding place
Easy find, but well hidden from the muggle hoards [^]

Interesting spot. Disappointed to see that someone couldn't be bothered to get out of their 4x4 to walk to the other bunker and squashed all the native heath in the process. The heath is just starting to flower this time of the year and is a great sit to see. Finally dropped off the red shoe. Sorry for having it for so long.

Timbo's Tower was near not found, for some reason my GPS was reading wrong (no really it was, honest) but in the end it was found and my imagination went way back in time, to when these towers were being used. I can just now see blokes sitting in these towers as the planes came in and started to shoot up the targets in practice runs and those inside would be hoping that they were safe enough and that the flyers were good enough. This cache was a taste of things to come as we were heading into the Little Desert proper, a word of warning though, 4X4's only as the sand is deep and the dunes a tad daunting. Thank you Breakers Bunch. TN....Left a smile.
We just kept following tracks in the desert and eventually got to gz. Thanks Beakers Bunch

# 13 of 22 on a group VCRAC ( GCY98X ) drive over the weekend with TheChops, Emnjared, Marcus Vitruvius and Haveanez.
This was an unplanned and unexpected stop on the trip but I think everyone was glad we did it.
Had a bit of trouble finding the right track into the park and unfortunately missed the opportunity by 10 minutes to take some pics of a brilliant colored sunset once we had arrived at Gz but thankfully it was still light enough to appreciate the area and find the cache.
Would have been great to be a spotter in a tower when target practice was happening.
TNLN, cheers.

WoW!! How suddenly the scenery changes and we were so lucky to be out here with the most magnificent sunset! This was an unplanned cache, but what a great spot to go to! Unfortunately had to leave the GeoMazda tucked safely off the road and spilt up into the other teams 4WD for this one....GeoMazda would not have coped with this very bumpy, sandy track....was lots of fun though!! Thans so much for bringing us to the very interesting historical site.

This was our fourteenth find, on a mammoth weekend caching, with DJ Rascal, Emnjared, Haveanez and Marcus Vitruvius. We were attacking the Victorian Country Road Atlas Challenge, and were aiming to pick up 10 pages over the 2 days. A fantastic spot, and a beautiful time of day to find it. A spectacular sunset, and the sudden change of scenery made this a great stop along the way. Thanks - this was a worthwhile bonus for Page 7.
Reperio at 1755. With nearly all the caches we stopped by today being virtually drive bys, it was great to get a little off road action to visit this area. Fantastic to visit a location with a historical element to it, and a location that we would have otherwise missed had it not been for the cache placement. Found with Haveanez, DJ Rascal, TheChops and Emnjared.

Found by Mary & David at 1620. Another Beaker beauty. After driving in to Dahlenburgs Mill and back, the trip in to this cache was easy. You could have made this one very cruel. Saw quite a few kangaroos nearby in the scrub. How do you learn of these places? Like Dahlenburgs Mill, we were the first visitors for 2011. Our thanks again to Beaker. See you next time we're in the South-East for a little longer.

This was a very interesting place, in a spot we would never have found without the excuse of caching...It would be interesting to find out more.

Found with Demath. Great location for a cache. The bullet holes add an air of realism to the scene.

Having come up a ½ a day early to going riding in the central block I spent my time wisely by collecting a couple of caches in the eastern block.
While this wasn't quite in the eastern block it was very close to where I left the car.
This was my third and I revisited the site with14 others later in the day.
Interesting bit of history here.
Thanks Beaker.

Had muggle friends from Adelaide here today so we decided that a journey into the desert was the order of the day,out we wandered along the beaten track till we come across the concrete bunkers.
amazing what you find and the Knowledge that you gain, sad to see the integral part of history just being let go.
Thanks for taking me here Beakers Bunch

Well, this was my first FTF and I am proud of it!
I spent the final minutes of the limited winter daylight trudging through the scrub land in the misty rain, and (having read the hint prior to setting out) I was humming Rocky Horror to myself in anticipation of the cache. It sure was a relief when the lonely tower finally loomed in front of me - it was a trickier hide than I was expecting but the coordinates are perfect and the hint is highly amusing.
But the sun had truly set as I walked back to the car - which my helpful mother had parked a kilometre away for fear of getting stuck - and as I slowly made my way back to the headlights the scene was becoming a lot less 'Sweet Transvestite' and a lot more 'there's a light... over at the Frankenstein place...'
And then, upon my return, the car wouldn't start. The battery was dead.
So we sat there in the dark, in the middle of nowhere, my phone battery nearly dead from the strain of geocaching, waiting for a mechanic. It was the classic beginning to a horror movie.
The spookiness ends there (which was good for us but bad for the story) but it guaranteed that I'll never forget this experience. It's taken me 87 caches to get a FTF and I'm very happy about it, no matter how difficult it was. Thanks!
