Very windy at this spot today, a cap rescue was undertaken while we were here, (not mine). Will email answers after posting this.
It was very windy at the top, but the view was worth it. TFTC!

Today we visited Mt Schank. Despite the wind and rain, we really enjoyed our visit, especially the views and the geology of the area. We plan to return at some time in the near future when the weather is better so that we can walk to the bottom od the crater.
Answers to the questions have been forwarded to the CO and the required photos have been aded to our log. Thanks for the cache Adrian Mc.

We took advantage of the Long Weekend to roadtrip from Central Vic to Mount Gambier with a few detours. My first trip to SA and I loved it all. Such a massive walk but we made it and were rewarded!

One of 7 Fantastic Earthcaches logged for the long weekend. We roadtripped to Mount Gambier from Central Vic and had a wonderful time exploring unique places and finding clever Geocaches.
After rolling my ankle in Naracoorte on our way, this was certainly a difficult climb for me. However we made it and it was certainly worth the hike! Beautiful views.
Thank you Adrian Mc!

In the mount for a couple of meetings today and after finishing up a little early I had time for a couple of caches for tomorrow it's up bright and early for the trip home.
After collecting the clues I wondered off up the hill to find some magnificent views.
Thanks for placing this cache Adrian Mc

Enjoyed this walk and reading about the formation of the crater.

So here we were thinking we were going to be able to claim the cache without doing the hard work - until we read the twist in the tail of the description!!!. So up we went and in the end the views on the way up made the climb really worthwhile. Thanks for another interesting earth cache.
Had to go to the Mount today to do a few jobs. So we thought we would go a few caches despite the heat and we had Mt Schank on the agenda. It was a hot but good climb up the geohound is exhausted now after his exertion. There were quite a few others climbing but we seemed to be the only nutters that also headed down into the crater.
We love a good Earthcache and this was no exception really interesting info on the boards.
Have sent our answers to CO. TFTC a favourite for sure.

Thanks for the exercise The walk up the slope was a challenge for us unfit ones but the walk around the rim spectacular!

Found this cache while in the Mt Gambier region doing some caving with venturers from AV2015. Loved the view from the top of the rim. Thanks for the informative cache.

Unfortunately we didn't have time to climb today but it looks magnificent so we'll try to get back here.
Mr C remembers climbing Mt Schank on a school trip back in the 1980s. When we got to the top someone had painted(?!) "Vic Rules" in big letters at the bottom crater. To this day we don't know if it was a patriotic Victorian or if it was someone named Vic who had made the brave descent to the bottom (the trail that leads down there now wasn't there back then). Thanks for bringing us back here Adrian Mc. It was a nice day for a climb, and a great view at the top. TFTC.
We visited Mt Shank yesterday as part of our around Oz trip. We really enjoyed climbing up to the rim and then down into the crater. Unfortunately although I wrote the answers down when we visited I must have thrown the page out as we tidied up the caravan ready to travel. I have the answers to questions 1 & 3 from the photos I took but question 2 despite hours of googling eludes me. Also I now find that the required photo needed to be taken from a specific location and not from a location of our choice, we picked a spot as we walked around the rim. So it is with much regret that we cant claim a find but had a great day anyway.

#417 - Having Joined Tricia2 on her Around Australia trip (my Adelaide to Brisbane part) we stopped off at Mt Schank for another smiley and an overnight stay. The smiley was only part of the satisfaction we got from this earth cache. The view (and the exercise!) was just marvellous. A fav. from me. TFTC Adrian Mc
We are Touring Australia and now camped at Mt Gambier in anticipation of the Geozing Race on Sunday.
We headed out to Nelson, Port Macdonell, and Mt Schank finding this cache along the way in the GeoCruiser. Surprised to find 3 caravans camped up here at the facilities block.

Logging with permission from the owner. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Mount Schank. The climb was quite manageable although we did take advantage of some of the seats on the way. Once there it was incredible to be actually standing on the edge of a volcano. Thanks for bringing us here.
found this while in the area for the oz mega but only just getting around to logging sorry

With limited time in town Mt Schank was high on our list to visit. How often do you get to climb up a volcano?
The climb was a little taxing but the view from the to was definitely worth it. The kids even agreed. We walked around the rim to collect the cache there but didn't have time to walk down into the crater.
Thanks Adrian Mc for the cache and the lesson on volcano formation. A fav for me.

Found on our "Making Memories" tour of Mainland Australia.
Today we explored Mount Gambier and surrounds with Whitewebbs using geocaching as our guide.
This geocache bought us to an amazing location and we thoroughly enjoyed the journey to this cache. It's not every day you get to stand on the rim of a volcano and this cache location will be one we will remember. Thanks for bring us here and for the cache. Have emailed CO with answers.

Found with Tassie Trekkers while exploring Mt Gambier. What a beautiful spot. Climbed to the rim -- amazing.
Found with La Kedi on our 2nd last day in SA. The views from up here a wonderful but I'm glad I wasn't around during Mt Schank's more volatile times. Thanks Adrian Mc
We pulled into the nearly empty carpark here and collected some information before heading up to the crater, thinking about how odd it was to be climbing one of the mountains we'd been admiring not that long ago from the coast! It's a spectacular crater - I can just imagine a Lost World type scenario here, with dinosaurs trapped inside the steep walls... Quite the hike up, though it didn't take as long as we thought, but we weren't going to go for the trads! TFTC, Adrian Mc. =^.^=
Visiting Mogni for the weekend. Headed out to conquer Mt. Shank. Got the info and then the ascent. wow earned the smiley. Go the required photo plus about a dozen more. WOW is just not enough. Great views. Of course did the other caches so that meant down into the centre and then back to make a circuit of the rim. Great spot to visit. Thanks Adrian Mc for binging us here. email coming.
We really enjoyed walking around here gathering the answers and taking in the natural beauty.
We had been here a couple of months ago, and enjoyed it so much we returned today. After climbing up to the rim, we decided to go down into the crater - an awesome experience.
Thanks for the earthcache, Adrian Mc.

Mrs iml72 has a fear of heights but climbed up, she got stuck clinging to the seat at the top while mr iml72 went off finding the other caches.
Visited while on short trip with ThePacGirl to enjoy the sights around Mount Gambier.
Climbing into and out of a volcanic crater has always been on my to-do list, and today we did it!
Initially seemed daunting, but relatively easy in the end.
We only realized there was a traditional cache inside the crater after we got back to the car - so we'll have to return!

Geokid and geomum did the walk up Mt Schank to achieve our first earthcache! Although it was really more of a quick dash up those steep steps as a grizzly geobub was back at the car with geodad waiting for a feed from mum. Amazing view of the crater and interesting history lesson on the info boards. TFTC
We are so glad we came here. Had a great walk up and what a view into the crater. I've been to Mount Vesuvius but this was something on an Australian theme. We walked the rim and then down into the crater. No reception there otherwise I would have grabbed the cache in there too.
Gathered the information and have sent the email. Can't add the photo until home again. Great fun.
Thanks!

So the Wife and i have decided to move to MT Gambier, and we decided that we should go and take a look at the place first. So We took a drive down to Mt Schank. I decided to do the earth cache only and do the hike to the top of the mount after we move down.
Thank you Adrain Mc for the cool cache.

Great spot will be back to find the traditional caches on the rim when I return to the Mount. Logged with permission. Photos to follow when home from holidays. Thanks Adrian.
We have been here now a few times but haven't realised there was this cache here. So as we were here with team Jantoshys for another cache recently placed here "Up down. Up down." We decided that it was a great chance to tick this one of the list. We have only done a few earth caches & are really starting to enjoy them, finding out some history we wouldn't normally find out. So as we were heading to the other cache, the photo was taken with Geokiddies, 3 of mine & 2 of Jantoshys. We went down in the middle, just a beautiful scenic area with lovely views. So peaceful & relaxing. On the way back geokiddies had counted 344 steps from top to bottom. Then questions were answered. Thanks for bringing us here. TFTEC
Spent the day around mount gambier with cows with guns and families. Great walk around the rim and down to the floor to the smiley face. Good way to get the heartbeat up. Thanks for bringing us here.
A fantastic place and for me it was a bit of a bucket list thing , I've allays wanted to climb a Volcano. The hike around the rim and down to the bottom of the Volcano is well worth the effort.
Thanks Adrian Mc for the cache!

This was my second visit to Mt Schank. The first time was in 2005 and at that time I didn't even know about geocaching. It was rather easy to find all the necessary answers to the questions. So, today I had to climb Mt. Schank again to be able to log this cache. It was a nice climb. On the top, however, strong winds were blowing and it started to rain. I took a photo and started on the way back to the car at the parking place. Thank you for this cache. My first earth cache in Australia.

Found this guy on the way back to the Mount from a swim at Ewen Ponds, and a trip to Port Macdonnell. Nice quiet time of the evening, and it was starting to cool down too. Thanks for the cache.
Found on our BIG Little Event trip. A very good earthcache to do. Loved answering the questions, and the view at the top. But the walk up was very hard, we were tired by the end. Fantastic place. TFTC!
Visited during the Big Little Event 2013.

I enjoyed an amble up the slopes of Mount Schank again this morning
Always a spectacular spot to sit and stare.
Such a young place too, geologically speaking
I gathered the answers to the questions before the stroll and arrived at the coordinates to take me photo.
I neglected to include the GPS in the picture though
What if your phone is the GPS and you need the phone to take the picture ?
Thanks to Adrian Mc for the excuse to stroll up the hill again and absorb some of planet Earths recent history up close [^]

This was a great cache, although the rest of the family missed out on it. I ran up the mountain as fast as I could (not very), to an amazing view of the crater bowl. The wind was non existent on the outside, but at the edge it nearly took my head off! I contemplated walking into the centre, but the thought of a grumpy trip back to the caravan park was enough to dissuade me.
I took a couple of happy snaps and got the traditional cache on the other side of the crater as well. On the way back I spotted a wedge-tailed eagle circling inside the bowl looking for afternoon tea. A peregrine falcon cruised overhead as well. The trip down was a lot quicker than the one up.
I'm handing over one of my precious favourite points for the experience.
thanks AdrianMc

This was one of the most interesting craters we have visited in Australia as the size of it allows you to understand and visualise the sequence of geological events that created it. Our photo was taken at waypoint S37 56.422 E140 44.096, after we had walked down into the crater and before we did the rim walk. A favourite cache.
Wow what an awesome view from the top. We climbed up with all 4 kids and the little ones did a really good job, dad only had to carry them half the way up. Thank you for the experience.
Logging with permission from owner. Great spot for an earth cache. Not so good for my cousin's new shoes! Lol TFTC!
We visited this great spot together with Mary and Aspen dog. It´s a amazing place and full of nature and wildlife. Thank you very much. To collect the information was very interesting.
Wow what an awesome view from the top, well worth the walk to the top to see it all.
When we got dien there were a few locals pulled up doing actraining run to the top and back, they said they do it quite regularly!!

The next leg of our trip so to see the old volcano being Mt Schank and do the earth cache there but we had time to do some selected caches on the way down the forestry roads will dodging the roos. The caches collect where An Absolute Disgrace, CO2, Pussy town, Basil's Barricade Significantly South and Mt Schank earth cache
An Absolute Disgrace was first. We parked next to the disgrace and it is good to see it is now being cleaned up. We followed a well formed cache trail to GZ but went round in circles as the tree cover played with the GPSr we eventually found the cache a little more covered than suggested and completed the signing duties before re hiding. TFTC
Arriving at CO2 it was amazing to see this plant in the middle of the forrest. We could see some workers so hoped the cache was far enough away to avoid too much attention which is was. Once at GZ we made a quick find as the hide was exposed so we covered it up some more after completing the signing duties. TFTC
With a name like Pussy Town we had to make the visit. The terrain rating has increased dramatically as four or so pine trees have been felled just by the cache site. We at first thought GZ was buried under the fallen trees but they just missed it. Once at GZ we made a quick find and completed the signing of the log. TFTC
We found a forestry road that only left us a short hike up the hill to Basil's ccc GZ. Tree felling had recently occurs so lots of small branches to hop over on the way up and down. It took a bit to find this one and when we did we where not sure it we had the right or safe item. A quick check of previous logs confirmed we had the right container so we opened it up and signed the log. TFTC
Mt Schank Earth cache provided some more interesting history, geology and geography of the area. With the required information in hand it was a steep walk up to the top for the photographic moment. Amazing view into the old crater. TFTEC. Its a pity what a blast has been archived as we would of liked to have had a go at that one as well.
Once on the rim we headed on round to Significantly South seeing we had made the effort to get to the top. The cache was an easy find but is in a messy. The lid was not on it and it was full of water including the log book bag which does not have a good smell. We tried to sign but really just left an imprint. The lid is broken on one side so it really needs to be replaced. It appears looking at the logs its been in disrepair for a while now. TFTC

Visiting from the UK with my brother, having a few days in Mount Gambier. Enjoyed the climb and views from Mount Schank ,photo will be uploaded on my return to the UK thanks for bringing us here.
This is an absolutely fantastic and spectacular location, well deserving of an Earthcache. The walk up and around the rim is a must - we also went down into the crater which certainly added to the aches and pains next day! Answers emailed, hope they are OK. Thanks so much for setting up an Earthcache here - our favourite type of caches!
We were on a road trip from Sydney doing the Great Ocean Road and decided to just go that little bit further across the border to Mt Gambier before turning around and heading back. Glad we did! The geology around here is fantastic. We had a great time exploring the many sinkholes, seeing the Blue Lake and of course climbing this volcano.
As we set off from the car park, the sky looked ominously dark and incredibly threatening but we took the risk and brought raincoats just in case the heavens opened up. And did they open! Needn't have bothered with the raincoats it was so heavy! It was one of those times when you get so wet it just becomes funny! It added to the experience, and we had a great time walking the rim.
It's a stunning example of a volcano with the rest of the land around being so flat. A super earthcache!
Thanks,
The Hancock Clan

After a very successful road trip to Adelaide from Melbourne to pick up caches and complete the three multi caches that start in Melbourne and finish in Adelaide, we were on our way home via Mount Gambier. Being a massive EarthCache fan, travelling home via Mount Gambier was a must. Wow, what a missive walk it was for me up to the top of this volcano! I had to stop a lot of times on the way up. We made it to the top eventually and, given it was such a climb, I decided we really should walk around the top of the rim. This was well worth while too as the view from different angles really added to my prospective of the volcano. Thanks for the cache Mc Adrain.
Always appreciate an excuse to walk up here again. Although for once, we didn't ascend into the crater. Our answers are on their way.
Amazing how many visitors to this area don't even seem to realise this great feature is here.

Having booked a short-break holiday in Mt Gambier before deciding to buy a new house, it worked out rather well as we could enjoy a relaxing three days in the Mount before returning home and packing up for our move next week.

Thanks for the cache Adrian Mc!

This was the quickest trip I've ever made to the summit.
I was up and back to the car in under 20 minutes after resting at the top for a while.
Answers sent and permission given to log the day it was published, but I've only just managed a photo today.
I love the awesome, near perfect shape of the crater
Thanks.

after a nice couple of days it was really great to come down and have a look around again. Always found these craters very interesting.
Answers and photo are on the way. What a climb !! Was worth it for the view, and also discovered a survey marker I didn't know was there.

Had been here before a few years ago and completed one cache, today I made the return with the team in tow with the bonus of another 2 caches to do as well. Mini Roo is very interested in geology and was very excited to visit a possibly dormant and not extinct volcano. We even made the trek into the bowl and back. Thanks Adrian Mc for the earthcache.

My Daddy carried me all the way up the huuuuuge mountain and I didn't even kick and scream. Then it started raining and Daddy had to pass me over to Mummy while I was looking down at the big hole in the ground. She carried me back down, but not as good as Daddy . TFTEC Mr Mc!
We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into when we started this. With Mrs O's knees aching and Mr O's lungs aching (from telling Mrs O to hurry up!), we made the trip up with Sir Maxy and got the pic from the amazing viewpoint. Some interesting background info there, as always. No schanks were sighted during the caching of this earthcache; however, we did get to see some authentic schanks on the way home . TFTC Adrian.
Went and did this one a couple of days ago and emailed the answers - getting permission to log. When looking at the cache details on our computer rather than the GPS realised there where photo co-ordinates and the photos we had weren't right so back we went today - this time to the right location where some other tourists happily took our photo. Thanks for the exercise

Another opportunity to log an EarthCache on my SA travels! This is another interesting spot, but as I was here on my own was unable to take a photo including myself - so drew a picture instead and took it with my GPS camera, so wasn't able to include that either! So I hope that my log can still stand.
Thanks for brining me to Mt Schank and for this cache Adrian Mc.

Last time I was here I came in from the east and it was a lot harder than todays effort.
On the way up a muggle kindly informed me that I was nearly at the top, and it got easier. On the way down a muggle asked me if it was worth the effort.
Yes: it got easier close to the top and it was worth it.
I walked around the rim last visit so gave it a miss this time.
Thanks for the lesson and the exercise Adrian Mc.

The Parrot went for a trip around the state a little while ago and met up with the Frog nation and the Starman down in the Mount.

Decide to go to "What a blast" while I waited for them to arrive. Climbed down to the bottom then bee lined it to the cache which scratched up the legs a bit and didnt help the previous injury from Pinnacle Look-a-like. Sat and waited for the frog man then together we went staight up to the rim. Wow what a climb.
Gathered some information on the way down for a rainy day and he it is.

A long, long time ago in a galaxy far far away the Australians won the ashes. The year was way before I was born so I am not sure which way the wind was blowing, but I am pretty sure the Brothers were bowling and the Poms were batting.

Was supervising the younger cachers do the What a Blast!! I'd had a virginal experience there. Once was enough. I'm a fair guy.
I'd met some English tourists up there, and they were amused at the antics of us geotypes. We walked the complete rim, catching up with Parrot and the Frog after they exited stage left. God damn.
A beaut rim where the acoustics are something else. Had never heard a croak or squawk from 400m before. No need for hand helds.
We all walked back down to the car, snapping pictures of everything and everyone. Luckily some of the back ground images had text. Cool Earth Cache. Thanks Adrian. Clear skies [^]
