Wow, Wow, Wow, what an awesome event.
As soon as the word got out that there was going to be an a event in Nelson, GeoMum was hooked and wanting to attend The Big Little Event after attending the Oz Mega in 2012. It was only days after knowing about the event, that we had organised time off work and booked our accommodation, and we were gearing up to attend. With every post that jgc3 had posted the excitement grew and the days felt like forever before the event was here.
The day finally arrived, we packed the car a 3am and had began our journey towards Nelson. No fire threats were going to hold us back. We traveled and collected some caches on the way and we were mystified by the collections of shoe hanging off a farm fence just out of Portland and of course grabbed a cache while we were here. We were sadden by the burnt trees on the Nelson-Portland road from the bush fires here only two weeks earlier. We were so glad the this didn't effect the 'Big Little Event' that we were attending.
We arrived at the event and were greeted by the welcoming committee' and then settled into our comfortable and clean dormitory style accommodation. (A flash back of school camps.)
The event was a people friendly event and all cachers were easily approachable as we laughed and swapped stories of our finds and DNF's. Each cacher on the road was easily identified by flying Australian flags on their cars as we waved to each other in passing, and saying "There goes another cacher!"
We met new cachers from Toy Hunters on the Bingo night and on the boat trip with Bon and Ben, and the Encouragables and Scullracers on random hunts for caches, to meeting Quasar at the night cache and then again while canoeing over to the island for the 'Australia Felix August 20 Flour bags' cache (Thanks to Snap happy for the loan of his canoe.) and finally meeting Parallel Sticks at the 'Angry Birds Nest' tree cache in Portland. It was great meeting them all while we were all on our own caching missions. Smile It was also great catching up with Happy Snap once again during the Sunday night entertainment performance.
The weather was fantastic as we spent most of the weekend casually searching for caches in the Nelson and Mt Gambier areas and exploring the local tourist spots. The beautiful coast of Nelson and the amazing Blue Lake, Umpherston Sinkhole and the Cave Gardens in Mt Gambier. We even enjoyed fish n chips on the grass by the mouth of the Glenelg River.
Many caches to find and equally as many Munzees. It was a fantastic weekend had by all.
Thanks to James and Charmaine and thanks to their supporting team Tanya and Wayne and other family members, friends and volunteers who all chipped in to help run the Big Little Event. It all ran smoothly thanks to the effortless work of these people.
We enjoyed the the bingo night and the performances from Rubber Soul and Mahalia and Beau. We enjoyed the boat trip and canoe cache. We e enjoyed sightseeing and all the local and BLE caches. We had a ball.
Groundspeak have their definition for a Mega Event all wrong. This Big Little Event was a MEGA in itself.
* MEGA Fun,
* MEGA Caches,
* MEGA Munzees,
* MEGA Laughter,
* MEGA Kilometers,
* MEGA Entertainment,
* MEGA Beauty,
* MEGA Friendly People,
* MEGA Effort from James and Charmaine.
Thanks for all the organisation and hard efforts for this Event. It gives other events a run for their money.
To top it off we collected a Geocoin.
We concluded our trip with an overnight stay in Warrnambool and a drive along the Great Ocean Road onto the 12 Apostles completing a number of Earth Caches.
Once again thanks for bringing us to Nelson and thanks for an awesome event.

Had an excellent weekend catching up with some friends traveling down together, enjoyed some time with some friends at the event new to geocaching & had a great time making new friends & catching up with cachers, wether it be out on the field near a cache, listening to music, or playing a game of cards. In all an enjoyable weekend & turned out to be fantastic weather for camping. Oh, we also grabbed a few caches as we explored the area, setting a new record for the number of caches in a month. Thanks JGC3

Thanks for a great weekend, even though I spent way too much time caching to enjoy the activities put on by the organisers. Was very glad to receive a cold drink from James while packing the camper trailer, with assistance from locus cache. Guess she felt she had to help after a couple of us had to sort her tent out for her!. Thanks again.

Travelled down on Fri caching as we went.
Continued the journey on Saturday, caching as I went. Arrived about midday to register and sign the logbook.
Since there was hardly anyone around at the site, I headed off to find some more cache. Optus reception is next to zero in Nelson, so communication with other teams was a bit haphazard, so cached most of the rest of the day on my own. Missed the boat cruise, bugger.
All in all, it was a great spot for an event, apart from no rewarding little tipple at the end of the day.
Managed over 200 finds during the event and had a great time catching up with other cachers and putting faces to names I have seen in logbooks!
Well organised, and look forward to the next one. Will it be a mega next time? Smile
Thanks James and crew.

20-Jan-13

Looking forward to the boat trip tomorrow. Will log all the cache finds when we get home. Thanks to the organisers.

Arrived yesterday. Thoroughly enjoying first Event so far! Special thanks to my friendly onsite camping neighbours who invited me along last night to my first ever Night Cache hunt. Amazing experience not to be forgotten.

19-Jan-13
We're enjoying our selves, finding some very different types of hide, experiencing all seasons of weather from raining trenching on the beach to sweltering high 30s, great meeting up with fellow catchers and hope to meet many more this evening, Thanks for organising the Event and placing many more new caches in some fabulous locations. Good job. Very Happy

18-Jan-13
I was on my way to the Big Little Event and just happened to have to wait for twenty minutes for one group and then two hours for the really late latecomer to get to Tailem Bend Surprised Considering that I had the greatest distance to travel, that was interesting Wink

So, I stopped and did one cache all on my own. Then when Honeysucker and firesafe arrived, we headed out and got a few more together. Smile

When Huurtle finally arrived, we headed off in convoy to some very interesting caches and by the end of the day, I had locus cache'd on 24 and only had 1 DNF. [^]

This was such an awesome day as it included my getting the Corolla bogged in sand, firesafe getting bogged in mud (however he got himself out where as I had required his help to get out of my spot of bother), my first visit to the sea side of the Coorong, some great fun driving on dirt roads (anyone want to clean the inside of my car?) and some great company from Suzi Quatro on the CD.... all in all a fantastic way to get to an event!! Big Grin [^] Big Grin [^]

We parted company at Kingston SE and I cruised on my own to the Big Little Event at Nelson, getting only a few more caches on the way as by then, I was kind of tired [|)]

I finally arrived here at about 9.30pm and after a huge day of caching, I was so tired that I gratefully accepted Dennisc52's offer of putting my mattress on his campervan floor for the night so that I did not have to put up my tent in the dark (which in hindsight turned out to be a good thing as I had forgotten how it went together and that made for some very amused on lookers in the morning Big Grin ).

Now that I am safely home and logging caches, I can only say how much I enjoyed this event. Loved the boat ride Big Grin (appreciated immensely that Tanya waited for us to get there since we were still on SA time Surprised ), loved meeting other teams and especially taz-bud/inkle who had the disadvantage of being camped next to me when I arrived late at night and still buzzing after a geeat drive over...(I get louder the more excited I get Wink ).

I also really enjoyed bumping into scody again, having originally met them in Adelaide last year.Smile

Also MoorooducRobbos and Debs22 who I met and cached with at Oz Mega Albury/Wodonga last year and I met MurchUnearthers too Smile.

Even met skullracing, another team who I initially met at Oz Mega Albury/Wodonga, too. (Even scored a wild PT of theirs from a cache by the end of the weekend.)

Loved the striped green and brown tree frog in the shower, mere centimetres from my face on the wall Big Grin, loved the beautiful area of Nelson and surrounds, loved the 4WD tracks and caches and most of all, hugely appreciated the massive effort put into making this event happen!! [^] [^]

Many, many thanks for such a fun reason to have a workout.. oh, was this meant to be a holiday? SurprisedWink I think I now need to go back to work for a rest after the huge days of caching Cool

SL. TFTC jgc3 Smile

Well, it was true - BIG on fun, little on boring bits. Loved this event. Got most of the BLE caches and munzees; plus many more around the area. Met some friendly familiar and new faces, with some great caching and conversations. Got a few pathtags and TBs along the way. Loved the Rubber Soul concert, it was enjoyed by all. The bingo game on the Friday night was also a good time to chat with cachers and have a good time. Thanks jgc3, enjoyed this SO much and well done on organising such a successful event!Wink

18-Jan-13
What a fantastic event! Bon and Ben would like to thank all of the people who assisted in organising the event and hid so many new caches and munzees for us all to find! It was so great to catch up with some of our old caching buddies and make lots of new friends! Sadly we said goodbye to our most faithful and long time geocaching friend, our gps, but feel incredibly lucky to have been awarded with a brand new gps from magellan and the crew who organised the event! Long live caching! We have many a story and pictures to send into the magazine and look forward to getting our subscription soon! Signal the Frog is now a travel bug and will be travelling us all around Europe next year, counting both our kilometres and finds! Thank you again to all those who helped organise the event and we will see you all at the next one! xo Smile Bon and Ben (and Signal!)

#3500 We're logging this as a mini milestone. We arrived in convoy with our travelling companions 3InOne on the Thursday who made a long driving day so much more bearable, fortunately they were also kept abreast of the local fire situation by Mishion - a huge thanks to both. After a late start on the Friday we arrived at the event site which was a venue well suited to the BLE. We were concerned about the fires and how they may have affected the local community but thankfully the beautiful town of Nelson remained unscathed - we did see the effects on local forests and pine plantations though. Regardless of the extent of the fire there were a huge number of caches to be found, more than we anticipated and we were kept quite busy as such. We had some specific night caches that we had prioritised which took us from Portland to beyond Mt Gambier - unfortunately we missed the entertainment and from all accounts it was our great loss. We also missed the boat ride but arranged one of our own which was an experience in itself Big Grin. Nevertheless we met so many cachers during the course of the weekend both those that we were well acquainted with and many new faces. Such a friendly bunch and this mix of people made for a sensational weekend - that coupled with the enormous effort of the organisers who made the event the success it was. jgc3 need to be also commended for their efforts in the number and variety of caches laid out for the entertainment of the BLE participants and anyone fortunate enough to visit the Nelson area. The weather.....well that was a blessing too. Caches took us to so many wonderful places of interest and on some lovely walks, exactly what we love about the caching experience. Our thanks to jgc3, the other locals and all the attendees - we had a blast [^]

18-Jan-13
A BIG thanks to jgc3 and all who helped with this event Smile
I had a ball chasing caches by foot, bike and car over the three days and got to really see the area Big Grin

18-Jan-13
Attended the whole weekend, got to meet with geocachers that were only names on logs till now. Very enjoyable weekend.

18-Jan-13
We attended the event from 11.00am on Friday 18 Jan. and left at 10.00 am on Monday 21 Jan. In between we had a lovely time meeting new teams catching up with teams that we knew very well and enjoying the Nelson area. The entertainment that was organised was outstanding with the Rubber Soul band on the Saturday and Mahlia on the Sunday - admittedly it was a small group that enjoyed the Sunday concert, but it made it feel like a private little party.
Thanks jgc3 and helpers for putting on a good event.

18-Jan-13
The Parrots arrived on Thursday morning ready for a fun weekend at Nelson that certainly delivered for us.
Straight up I got 3 FTF while waiting for the house we had rented to be ready.
Then in the afternoon I went for a paddle down the Nelson River from Simpson Landing over to the Bird Hide cache.
Then back to cook dinner served out in the garden in the company of parrots. The yard was alive with birds, Blue wrens, Parrots, Galahs, Sulphurs Crested to name a few.
Next day up and registered at the event and then we had a great time going out with a geocaching team we had not met before.
I love that events allow you to meet new people and have wonderful experiences like we did. They were so enthusiastic racing from cache to cache and the parrots had a ball sharing a day with them.
We even got to play vehicle recovery later in the day down on the beach by the ponds.
What a hoot.
Then in the evening I went kayaking again but this time up the river. I even got to within 17 metres of a cache but the slope was too steep to get it.
Saturday we went out on the river cruise then back out for some more caching before coming back for a great concert experience and lots of Ginger Beer.
We danced the night away with Froggy, Flipper and Crane such fun.
Loved the band loved the band loved the band
By the way did I mention we loved the band.
We had to leave Sunday as Mrs Parrot started a new job on Monday morning and not arriving at work on your first day might have been bad form.

Lovely location. We had a great weekend.

18-Jan-13
Thanks jgc3 for a wonderful event. We actually enjoyed this event more than the three megas we have attended. Firstly, the town of Nelson was a excellent spot for it and the venue was really good. The entertainment was fabulous - we haven't danced like that for years. The food was good too, and we couldn't get over the number of caches, and of munzees, that you put out. Quite an achievement, thank you very much for all your hard work. We hope this will be a regular event.

18-Jan-13
Thanks to James and Charmaine and all the other geocachers, who made us so welcome at the BLE. It was a long way to come from England, but we are glad that we could fit the event into our tour around Australia. We are only sorry that we will not be able to attend the next one. Nelson is a beautiful location, the number of caches available kept us busy all weekend (and on the previous Thursday too) and the additional evening entertainment by Rubber Soul and Mahalia were brilliant. We thoroughly enjoyed the boat trip too.

18-Jan-13
Many thanks for a great BIG Little Event.

A huge thank you to SA Parrot Heads for their help. It's fantastic that people are willing to give their time and knowledge to teach others. We really appreciate it. ?? And thanks for getting me out of a tight spot.

1910th cache found by WazzaAndWenches. Log signed at 12:00Hrs.

Although we've been to Nelson a couple of times we've not been here specifically for caching. With such an abundance of caches around the area and a great event organised we just had to make time for a few days away from home. With any luck we'll find around 200 caches for the 5 days away.

Thank you James and your helpers for the huge amount of work that has gone into organising the event and all the activities. Hopefully we'll see a lot more teams show up over the weekend to enjoy all your new caches.

Boating part of event; to answer some FAQ's

This is included in the registration fee.. no extra charge.

Because of safety we can only take a limited number of people at one time.
So it would help us if you book a time at the registration table as we'll attempt
to run a cruise on the hour from 11am to 4pm Sat / Sun.

If you can try to book at early as possible so we can keep on time.

Also bring a drink / snacks / hat / sunscreen on board.

Please be at the docks about 10 mins early to allow for people to board etc.

You need to wear a supplied life jacket...

Thanks.. enjoy your trip and see you all at the event..
