First time out this far, great to have an excuse to come up here. Thanks for putting on a great event and I think Hamilton events will have to up their game to beat this one! Nice to meet lots of new people and had lots of fun doing some higher terrain caches. Looking forward to next year Very Happy

10-Feb-13
Thanks to Kiwileon and Greenblat for a really great event me and the kids really enjoyed it only wish we could have camped the night to but had a change of plans at the last moment, it was nice to meet some fellow cachers looking forward to next years event which we will be camping this time.

10-Feb-13
Thanks guys for organising an awesome event!! I tried my first terrain 4.5 (Susan, you did defeat me, but only by a wee bit) - The newly published caches along the beach were great and I loved the caves! Definitely coming to the next Waitangi weekend event Smile

10-Feb-13
Had an absolute blast, meeting new (& new-ish) people & leaving with new friends. Great to find the “daunting” (Kura/Omanawanui loop) not only possible but enjoyable. Views to die for and some good caches on the way.
The joy of our first FTF’s diluted by the 20 companions on our little stroll but hey, FTF is FTF!
Too many high point to mention them all but Stretch’s beer can chicken more than made up for him & Mike waking us up by wafting cooking bacon from next door (tinned peaches & biscuits was not ‘all that’ for berkkie).
Loved the BBQ, sitting at the feet of legends (see FMZ’s comments below Wink ) & the Rosmar hospitality bus after dark.
Thanks to GreenBLAT & KiwiLeon for the organization
All in all, great weekend, what’s next, we wonder?

10-Feb-13
Thanks so much for organising another Great BBQ and Campout, we had a fabulous time & thanks for firing up the BB for the second time. Ninepin was great fun and worth being late back to eat.
Huge Thanks to the Rosmars for kindly donating some drinking water, as we had given ours away yesterday to a stranded motorist. This made for a great start to our day Smile
Lessons Learned Wink Upgrade Membership back to premium and do a PQ of the area. Sure we missed some great caches!
When you put the headlights on to be seen on winding roads, DONT forget to turn them off when you stop. LOL, we stopped when we got some Cell coverage to guess what check what caches were around but left the radio and Headlights on, am sure you can guess the rest Smile Anyway bonnet up after unsuccessful attempts to crash start the car ourselves. Less than 10 mins and help was at hand in the form of someone bigger and stronger to lend a hand, helps to drive a manual Wink We have decided what comes around goes around Smile
We required a bit of a longer drive to recharge the battery so a bit of a drive was in order. Great Fun, Thank You Smile

Wow, another great weekend and a great location with an awesome group of like minded people and beautifull weather. I'd love the walk over the Gibbons track and the beach although a bit long on the way back.

BBQ was great again with all the different food that everbody always takes along.
This year favorate was the beer can chicken and the brocoli salade. (and the Dutch apple pie of course)
Great to see a lot of new faces every year.
Thanks all for coming again.

09-Feb-13
Another amazing BBQ & Campout although this year with a little less camping than normal. What a great event, great company, lovely weather, good walking and an amazing setting. We can't wait for next year.

Thanks A&L for organising this, it is much appreciated Smile

09-Feb-13
A huge thank you to kiwiLeon and Greenblat for oranganising the weekend. Had a fantastic time, even if there were times I wouldn't have said so.
Thanks kiwiLeon for stopping for me to catch my breath on the hike. My friends think i'm mad to walk for miles, crawl through a swamp and swim a pond just to sign a piece of paper in a little box - and then head back into the swamp to find another. They just don't know what they are missing.
Didn't get to socialize too much at the BBQ, was I sat down all I cold do was dull the pain with alcohol.
Thanks Mrs A Bell for the Dutch apple cake, just what I needed at the end of the day. TFTC

09-Feb-13
Last minute change in our plans gave us the opportunity to attend the event but unfortunately we were too late to join up with either of the official cache tour parties so we ventured out on our own.
Great to see such a great turn out at the BBQ and so many new faces. The party continued on with the usual caching stories shared and star gazing until late into the night. Another well organised and executed camp out, wonder where we are going next year [?] thanks Leon & Alan for organising TFTE.

09-Feb-13
Terrific fun with great people. I ALMOST came away w/nice cooking gear, but was reclaimed this morning by Stretch. Nice caves. Thanks for bringing us to new scenery & different territory. Next year...?

09-Feb-13
We all had a fantastic time at the Waitangi Whatipu Walkabout and BBQ. We camped the night before so we were on hand to go on the intrepid walkabouts. We split up ("we can do more damage that way") with Mr and Master Jacksonz doing option 2 Gibbons/Muir/Back along the beach, and Mrs and Miss Jacksonz doing option 3 the Kura/Omanawanui loop. Both great walks, though the trek down the beach seemed to go on forever.

We then had a very enjoyable time sitting around afterwards, eating, drinking, and swapping caching stories. A super fantastic event. Thank you so much Alan & Leon for organising it.

PS : Our 500th find as well !

09-Feb-13
What a great weekend! Our legs are sore and tired even after only doing the 'easy' option 3 walk which was lead by Greenblat. The views and the amazing weather certainly made it worth it though, and not to mention the BBQ afterwards. Thanks for organising the great event KiwiLeon and Greenblat. We're already looking forward to next year's camp out!

A huge thanks to KiwiLeon and GreenBLAT for organising another great campout event.

Was meant to tag along with KL’s Gibbons Track group, but was too busy yakking and missed the trainRed Face and a planned swim. Ended up following the team lead by GB for option three. Rewarded with some great bush walks, awesome stunning views and very tired knees.

Great to see a big turn-out at the campout, nice to catch up with everyone, especially the newer cachers, lots of fun and laughter, looking forward to next year’s event in earnest. Thanks all for the yummy food. TFTEBig GrinBig GrinBig Grin.

This was the first time I'd been out to Whatipu and what a fantastic way to spend it! Great scenery, great walks, great company, and of course, great caches! Smile

Looking forward to next year's event!

Thanks for organising the fantastic event KiwiLeon and Greenblat!

Another great event, thanks for organising. Nice to catch up with old and new friends and swap stories.
Also nice to have some "luxury" accommodation nearby for our comfort level. Wonder where we will be next year .... Big GrinBig Grin

09-Feb-13
A huge thanks to Kiwileon and Greenblat for putting this together, my very first geocaching event! I chose Option 2 thinking, "Hey, I should be able to handle this with a fair degree of elegance." How wrong I was! It was a tough hike for someone as "round" as me, but it was sure worth the sweat and pain! Awesome hike! I had an impromptu swim in Zion Stream, (a tree decided it did not want me swinging around it), and I did my first swamp swim. It was awesome and a huge learning curve! Thanks all! It was a wonderful and great day!

09-Feb-13
Thanks to KiwiLeon and Greenblat for organising the event. Our first ever event attended - even if it was only to the BBQ, maybe next time we might be a bit more organised and fitter. Was awesome to meet some fellow cachers. Feeling inspired again, just need to convince the kids. Look forward to many more events in the future. See you all again soon.

Team fmz were in for the whole weekend experience (well, -camping, +lodge) - after picking up a cache find for the day on Friday we headed out to Whatipu and arrived at the lodge in the early evening. Not too many others were there yet, but we walked down to the campsite and had a nice evening pre-event event. In the morning we were up nice and early to meet up with everyone for our chosen walks - great weather for it too. Thankfully our walk on the Kura/Omanawanui loop was switched to clockwise, saving us from the would be hellish trudge up Omanawanui from the Whatipu side (it was bad enough coming down that way!) Anyway, after all the caching and group FTFs, what better than to relax on the grass with some good food, including of course the legendary dutch apple pie, drinks, and good company. Oh and stealing Tim's chair, that was pretty sweet too, cheers mate. There was also a long discussion about violating a chicken with a half drunk can of beer, and then cooking it that way - but oh boy was the result of that yummy, thanks stretch! Well, thank you to Leon and Alan, and respective families, for putting on another great event! TFTC!!! Big Grin

09-Feb-13
Thank you for organising this Waitangi event. By taking the much lesser option of probably 1/10th of the Option 2 Gibbons track (you guys looked awesomely fit before and after your trek!) I was able to introduce my other half to the "weird" pastime of geocaching. He of course found all 4 caches that we searched for and maybe became a little hooked Wink. I was convinced to grab the "precious" and will risk taking it closer to Mordor in a week or so.

Had a great time again this year. Great company, awesome scenery and caches, and yummy food. Glad my beer-can chickens were a hit - I'll be doing them again next year. Thanks to Alan and Leon for organising this event again.

09-Feb-13
Just got home to log now and am absolutely shattered!!
Headed out after work on the Friday and was great to see a few making the most of the whole weekend. Up nice and early Saturday morning to do Option 2 with a few detours. Really enjoyed the walk with great company, spectacular scenery and some awesome caches!! Great to see a good turn out this year to the BBQ and to stretch for the yummy beer can chickens!! Great to catch up with the usuals and also meet more likeminded cachers.

An awesomely epic weekend!! Thanks to Greenblat and KiwilLeon for organising another great Waitangi campout! Already looking forward to next year!!!

09-Feb-13
Had a great time & thanks everyone for coming along. Like Mike-miss I'm pretty shattered, and I'm thinking that I'm going to need to come back to Whatipu because there wasn't nearly enough time to get around all the caches. I'm pretty sure that everyone will have left without ticking off their whole unfound lists in this area.

Highlights were the stunning views off Omanawnui, the number of people that made it along to their first event or tramping in the waitaks for their first time, and the increasingly brave/crazy plans to find or hide more difficult caches as the evening wore on.

Thanks to:
- Those who ventured great distances just to be here; Cheshire, Dunedin, Rotorua, Camilton, Whangaraoa
- Roadrunner for his awesome walkie-talkie skills and going double the distance
- cachers who have kept this area well stocked in caches that made the walks worthwhile; evilno9, alligatorsNZ, M@, stretch, and a couple of idiots
- Everyone who pitched in to help with bbq'ing, salads, and the cleanup, including some cool flotsam off the beach
- Marnie from Whatipu lodge. Did anyone get see the ghost?
- Dominion Breweries, giving chickens something to worry about since 1929. Why is there always a 5am rooster at all our camping events for clucks sake???
- KiwiLeon for organising, and pouring some German fire-water down me last night
- Susan, for being so obliging Wink

Until next year...

09-Feb-13
Another great event though cut shorter than expected when Angeshirl found herself getting too much sun for her liking and not feeling so flash. Enjoyed our walk around the beach and was looking forward to a good old catch up but that'll just have to wait for another year. Good to see the people I did run into and good to see the event went as well as it usually does. TFTE Big Grin

09-Feb-13
Special thanks to GreenBLAT and KiwiLeon (who both took very well care about me) and everybody involved that contributed to this GREAT EVENT! I had a wonderful time and got to hang out with some of New Zealand’s "Geo-Legends"! The BBQ was great, and the hike was very beautiful (option 3)!
With all the warm hearts that were gathered here today I felt very welcome to this new side of the geo-world. Additional to exploring stunning nature and meeting all of you, I saw the milky way, know now that I don’t like gorge and had a piece of this yummy beer can chicken. Smile

09-Feb-13
Attended the BBQ. Many thanks to all who organised this afternoon, Fencarrows and I had a great time and were thankful for the opportunity to meet some of our fellow cachers. We grabbed a few caches on the way in and grabbed a few more on the way out. We are more keen now and hope to be attending the Mega event in Albany and will promote it to more we have introduced to caching recently.

09-Feb-13
Definitely worth coming up for the weekend! Had a great time catching up and meeting new people. possibly taking the prize for the southernmost attendee? Wink look forward to next year - thanks for organising this one!!

09-Feb-13
9/02/13 17:00 It was great to be able to make this, cache up with loads of old friends and meet some new ones, all in 'The Spirit Of Geocaching' of course Cool Was too lazy (or wisely slow haha) to go off with any of the organised treks, especially the uphill ones, but had a great time anyway. Loved the company, the food (mmmmm. Dutch Apple Pie...), the laughter Cool
Thanks KiwiLeon and GreenBLAT. Cheers, GenCuster

09-Feb-13
I was the first person on site at the Event, so can I claim the FTF? Wink
Just started to wonder if I was at the right place when KiwiLeon and Greenblat arrived. Once everyone was there we headed off on a very enjoyable group walk, though not in the direction I had initially intended. Thanks everyone for your company today and thanks Leon and Alan for organising another great Waitangi Event.

Weather looks great for the weekend.
Thanks for the extra BBQ's, at least we don't have to take turns like last year.

Mrs A Bell baked another Dutch apple pie.

See you all in the morning.

07-Feb-13
Will come along with muggle hubby but will just be doing a few short easy strolls. Staying in nearby bach so hope to join you for the bbq also.

07-Feb-13

Mark will be able to make it to Whatipu on Saturday. I would like to walk the Gibbons Track, and maybe as far as Walker Ridge, then return to Whatipu via the same route.

05-Feb-13
Looking forward to it. Option 3

Smellymeister and I will be coming out on saturday but we will just do some of the shorter walks in the area and then come back and camp sat night Very Happy

05-Feb-13
Looking forward to this weekend. We're probably coming Fri evening and would prefer option 3 for the walk. cheers

04-Feb-13
I will be arriving at the campsite Friday afterwork and camping out on the grass. Im up for option 2 with the optional side track through the pararaha stream to Kauri log jam. See you all then! Big GrinBig Grin

*** Announcement ***

Looks like we have some starters for Omawanui-Kura Tracks (option 3) so I will accompany that group, and KiwiLeon will walk the option 2 trip (with option for Kauri Log Jam detour).

For the two that mentioned option 4, if you are still wanting to do that as a one way trip from Karekare let me know, we might be able to figure a way to cut down some of the driving if you both take cars.

For those wanting to attempt option 1 or other walks, before you head off, can you please let us know who will be in your party, planned route, and expected time of arrival at the BBQ so that we can follow up if you are overdue.

04-Feb-13
Having done the caches along the beach, I could have my arm twisted into doing option 1 or 2, then heading north to Karekare to bring a car back to Whatipu. I'd rather NOT walk that beach / swamp again any time soon.

04-Feb-13
Four of us plan to be there, probably 2 for option 2 (or 1), and 2 for option 3. The current plan is to camp on Friday night, but head home after the BBQ on Saturday. Looking forward to it.

03-Feb-13
plane tickets booked, extra yoga classes banked in advance, ready to come Smile

03-Feb-13
Looking forward to meet the group... I am going for the easy option 3.

03-Feb-13
Hi,

We are keen for Option 3 too. Hopefully not as daunting as it sounds! We are also heading up to the campsite on the Friday after work. Looking forward to it!

03-Feb-13
Was keen to do option 3 starting at Wing Head House cache, not sure if we will stay the night may just come for the day.

02-Feb-13
Sounds like it will be a great time. I will not be hanging for the BBQ, but am still keen on Option 2.

02-Feb-13
Hi all,

Alan and I visited the area today and we're looking forward to the event next week.

The walks will start at 9am so be on time of you want to come along (see new event coords in next log).

The Option 2 walk will be done by us:

Gibbons/Muir track, Pararaha (Piranha) swamp and back along the beach (6-7hrs 17km ~T3.5 - T4.5 depending on optional detours) Optional is the side track through the pararaha stream to Kauri log jam.
If anyone wants to go that way, we'll be probably at the Pararaha campground (for lunch) around midday - if you want to catch up.

Option 3 is also available if anyone is interested (there must be some interest ........ (new caches perhaps??)
Omawanui/Kura loop (~T3.5, steep uphill at first) (8.5km ~5hrs including caching & stops)

For any of the other options mentioned before please organise yourself, you might want to leave earlier than 9 am!
Can every one please let us know what walk they’re coming on? Thanks.

Please look for the blue and green gazebo for the start point and event GZ.

Other than that lets hope that this great weather continues.

Will be along for the BBQ... and a walk or twoBig Grin

31-Jan-13
Will do my upmost to attend this one, as teenager spent a lot of weekends here Smile

29-Jan-13
I will be caching my way to the campsite on Friday, and staying both Friday and Saturday nights. Still undecided which walk(s) I will do on the Saturday. Probably option 1.

24-Jan-13
I'll attend though won't be staying the evening. I'm definitely keen to be involved with any group walk that's going down during the day. Personally I like the sound of options 1 or 4.

22-Jan-13
I'm keen on option 4 if there's enough interest in that one - Whatipu Walk and the Pa are the ones I'm most keen on doing on the day. Happy to help out with some of the puzzles out that way as well that could be collected for the event if anyone needs a push in the right direction.

22-Jan-13
I am fairly new to Geocaching, and am keen to meet people in the community. I cannot be camping, but I am very interested in the Option 2 walk...sounds great!

Just confirming, is the start time 9am at the moment?

Thanks for organising this, guys. I am really pumped about it! Thanks!

21-Jan-13
Thanks Paultaps, that was useful (saved me from looking up the tracks myself).

Personally I'm keen to tackle the caches along Gibbons track from "Choose your stick" to "shaggy". Might get that far and want to continue on to "Walker Ridge", but don't know yet. Then I'll turn around and go back to Whatipu. I have a couple of other unfounds in the general area, but I'm keen for a bit of relaxing back at camp as well and I reckon the initial climb up Gibbons to the top of the ridge will take a lot out of me.

Re heading to the Pararaha and then going upstream to Bivouac Falls and Apollo's Pool - I don't recomend going upstream to those, but rather going in from Lone Kauri Rd. Great caches, but either way, that would make for a big day.

21-Jan-13
And here's a map WITH the local caches. You can get the same thing on your browser by following these http://forums.gps.org.nz/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7866&p=50805#p50805 instructions.

Just a further note on a side trip to Bivouac Falls & Apollos Falls. I've not walked up the Pararaha above Odlins TT but from the 1m topo http://maps.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/aucklandcouncilviewer/ , it seems quite gorgey at the top end before the Con Bryan joins. I'm guessing that's a 6hrs detour on top of a 10hr circuit. You'd probaly be quicker going up Odlins and walking (or driving) along Lone Kauri Rd to pick up the normal entrance to Bivouac falls and return same. We'll keep some cold sausages and a hot chocolate for when you turn up at the BBQ around midnight Smile

Posting a topo map to a bunch of geocachers seems redundant, but this may help with identification of trail names in the discussions of options.

PS: I can email you a higher resolution (16 MB) version if needed. Contact me through my profile.

Will anyone else be camping on the friday night also?

20-Jan-13
Any chance of getting a cache breakdown on each of the 4 walks? Will certainly make decisions easier, especially on my behalf! Cheers!

It's a bit of a moot point for me personally, but I'm sure others are wondering... Does option 1 Gibbons --> Walker Ridge --> Odlin -->Pararaha Valley include a detour UPSTREAM to Bivouac Falls and Apollo's Pool? Having done Bivouac, Apollo and the Pararaha Valley caches, I'd certainly recommend the detour.

May i suggest option 1 with a slight detour upstream via Bivouac Falls and Apollo Pools. Head back downstream and grab Pararaha Point Pa and walk back via the beach. Surely doable?! There's gotta be others keen to do this?!

** Annoucement **
OK time to start getting planned Smile

group walk options being considered:
1) Pararaha Gorge via Gibbons/Walker Ridge/Odlins Timber tracks & back along the beach (~T4.5)
2) Gibbons/Muir, Pararaha (Piranha) swamp and back along the beach (~T4)
3) Omawanui/Kura loop (~T3.5)
4) Karekare to Whatipu vis beach (progodation) - will need drop off at karekare?

Please can those wanting to walk vote for an optioo above (other options/suggestions very welcome too). 9am start (to be confirmed) but the Piranha gorge trip might need an earlier start.

Susan on Sunday. & maybe some others... Wink

Looks like Big Fuzzy & I can make it, and maybe the 2 juniors as well Razz

18-Jan-13
What time on sat does it start? That will determine whether we camp both fri and sat or just sat.

18-Jan-13
Just to add to Smellymeister's question... Which walks and at what times are you guys thinking?

18-Jan-13
Soooo I have to ask. With the caching on the saturday are we camping the friday night or the saturday or both?

18-Jan-13
to 11hpg11 (and all others):
Event (caching / walks), BBQ & campout are on Saturday
But you can camp as long as you like.

17-Jan-13
I'll be there. Hoping that kids (UGTME) will be able to at least make it out for the BBQ.

Hi NZ! I am brand new and I am looking forward to meet the geocaching fellows of NZ Smile.
As I am having logistical difficulties (no car yet) it would be awesome if somebody would have a small spot for me to be able to attend the BBQ. Currently I am living in Auckland City on Beach Rd Wink
If you have spot just contact me via my profile.......

I'm not sure what is exactly happening yet on that weekend, so put me down for a maybe. But if I can make it, I would be happy to help guide a walk or two in the area.

Cheers,
Paul

16-Dec-12
Am thinking I will attend and have spoken with Fencarrows and they also will attend and I may bring a couple of extras with me. We will be camping.

16-Dec-12
After talking with Mike-Miss at the event, we were very enthusiastic to go to this event. Unfortunately we just found out that no Dogs are allowed. So we need to pass.

25-Nov-12
Tentative attend for the 2 of us at this stage! We will love to be there and to pull out the camping gear, but this is all dependent on what the niece's birthday plans are at that time.

20-Nov-12
yes, I will stay at the lodge too.

Sold!

You read my mind. I can't remember who it was I was talking to, but I remember being out this way a little while back and saying "the campout event should be out here next year". So that's a big YES from us! Big Grin

20-Nov-12
Tentative "will attend". This date is "danger close" to the due date of our 3rd child, but I may be able to use that to my advantage, as one last caching weekend away before the Kerr Household Insanity Dial gets turned up to 11. www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7IZZXQ89Oc
