Out with the wife today completing stage 3 of the Hillary Trail. Another great day of hiking throughout the Waitakere's! This stage has probably been my favourite so far - however a few more still to go!

A couple of likely trees stood out but i quickly spotted the cache. Another brief stop before heading off again Smile

14-Jan-17
I had been walking about 5 hours by this point and still had a good couple of hours back to the car. It was going to be a bit iffy whether there would still be daylight by that time. Luckily this was a quick find so I was back on my way in a flash. Log was quite wet, unfortunately I didn't have a plastic bag I could place it in.

01-Jan-17
Unfortunately despite mybest efforts could not locate this cache did not help thatmy gps refused to settle. Had a good search around various trees but nothing. Oh well them is the breaks.

31-Dec-16
Had a notification of a new cache cheekily placed atop a rather large hill not too far from where we had gathered for New Years ....Mr NZT was currently enroute to our current location, so we decided to wait for him to attempt the group FTF....ETA was only 15mins, but they seemed to go on for ever ..... Mr NZT arrived, unpacked, then back on the road to a suitable parking local.....
We thought we had a good plan in place to find the FTF which meant passing this cache on the way up the ridge....
Saw these few people running this trail...all be it running down hill, they would have had to run up hill at some point and this close after Christmas dinner... was getting the sweats just thinking about their action...

Quickly located, signed in as SEAC to save logbook space, and back on the trail to the FTF..hopefully.

TFTC.

Mr HeMaLuDy, Mr Stik-a-crane, and Mr & Mrs NZTravellers headed up this way in search of a possible FTF further up. (At some stage Mrs NZT decided to leave the men to their FTF search and returned to the car). They stopped off and found a few other caches along the way, including this one. A good bush walk to gather the caches today. Signed as SEAC (South and East Auckland Caching Crew - an abbreviation we have adopted as we often cache together).

31-Dec-16
Our New Years camp with Team SEAC was held at the Huia Lodge where we all stayed over various days.

We had arrived a day later than most due to other family commitments and therefore missed out on some FTF's the previous day.

There was another FTF on this track today. Grabbed this cache on the way to that FTF which we were successful in claiming.

Signed Team SEAC.

GZ pointed to the trees, the trees is where I looked, cache found, no problem! Excellent co-ords. This log was slightly damp, but no problem though. As I moved along I'm admiring the sun starting to set! What a view!!

23-Dec-16
Like the previous finder searched the wrong tree, then spread out to another hint item, and before I knew it merlot58 had the cache. Great teamwork today, with supernanny and merlot58. No one else on the track today, see some work has been done on this "Hillary Trail" track, amazing views from up here. Thanks for the hide Big Grin

23-Dec-16
Found today while out caching with merlot58 and rustynz.
Easy once in right trees !!!!!
Thanks alligatorsnz

23-Dec-16
It pays to search the right tree! We spent a bit of time searching the wrong one, then after reading some logs had a look for something else that would match the hint and very quickly had the cache in hand when we found the right one.

03-Dec-16
Searched the wrong tree to start with soon found the goods.Tftc

12-Mar-16
Agree with Jag50 the cache and log are very wet, managed to sign log. TFTC

23-Jan-16
Looked around thinking it was harder to find than it turned out to be. Surprisingly the cache log was very very damp. Managed to sign it though.

19-Jan-16
Cache was quickly found on a windy but sunny day. TFTC

06-Dec-15
A great day in the Waitaks today. The weather was great and the caching plentiful. However it took a turn for the worse in the afternoon when one of our party had a hiking accident requiring a very long wait at A&E, x-rays and stitches!

28-Oct-15
Out with Nigel Barnes 11 to do day two of the Hillary trail! Found be nb. Very wet inside!!!!

16-Jul-15
Heading down the track on the return from the parahaha valley. Day was winding down with the sun reflecting nicely in the trees. Looking around gz for tree on tree..had a few false alarms but found ok Smile some nice tree babies around! Thanks Wink

16-Jul-15
in the area replacing logs - new log installed - no log bag required any more

09-Jul-15
It seemed to get easier around here, maybe it was because I was at the top of the hill now. I made a quick find, but the log is wet - Could not really use it. A quick find though. off to the next.

Found this at the start of our tramp to pararaha valley.

21-Mar-15
Today Mallorcatommy and I did a huge walk... all in all 23 kilometres in a wonderful forrest... started at the whatipu campground.. This cache was the second one... We found this one quickly.. Thank you!

21-Mar-15
Every day we are traveling around is same but also different. Today we had again the pleasure to visit some very beautiful spots and were also able to find nearly placed geocaches. I thank every single owner for placing it and giving us with doing this an other good reason to come here.

11-Jan-15
Cats&Dragons thought it would be a good idea to collect the earthcaches in the area... I thought I was good to add this hill into the climb. One of us was wrong as this turned into a very long day in the hot sun.

The caches themselves were great with amazing views of the coast and mountain but the physical effort took its toll on this body.

Cache was quickly found and in good condition.

Well this was a Bl##dy early mission as we were trying to keep out of the heat of the day but had a 2hr drive before we even started.
Out and about with Novalightning for a days caching along a coast that neither of us had explored before. I had suggested that we stick to the coast and make our way north, he suggested that we take Gibbons Track north as how had can it be, Year Right. And he was for the first 6 or 7 caches.

This was the third of the day for us and after a walk up from the Whatipu car park. THe track along here is so open and inviting. to actually have this much light along here is so different to what we are used to.

the cache was a persistent one in that it didn't want to be located but eventually we got our sh1t together and nabbed the blighter

thanks for the placement

Another break needed for my fellow hikers and this time there were more happy that I had a geocache to find. TFTC

29-Mar-14
Cool spot log a little damp. Great day. T4TC

16-Mar-14
I went out on a post cyclone hike today, together with alligatorsnz, doing a loop circuit from Whatipu to Donald Mclean via Walker Ridge and returning again via Omanawanui Track – a great hike in the wind and occasional rain! After a short search the cache was found, I only spotted the "Tree on tree" when re-hiding the cache! TFTC!

01-Dec-13
On our favorite track again, track in great shape and a rapid find by Mrs Sp8.

Hope the little tree doesn't get flattened with all the handling. Still climbing...

Thanks for the cache.

03-Aug-13
Easy find, thank you!

23-Mar-13
Needed the clue to find this one, but soon sorted once we knew what to look for. Although I suppose if I took better notice of the names it would help LOL. TFTC.

02-Mar-13
Checked with council and (as also on website is stated) Dogs are allowed on the gibbons and muir track!!! Altough you need to pass a "no dogs" sign. Dogs are allowed on the track..confirmed by the council and other locals.

So we enjoyed a great walk and followed a trail of caches on the Gibbons track.
pff this was more of a challenge, going up and up. Cache was an easy find, but a nice trip to get there. Would more a swap of ratings hahaha

Thanks for putting these caches out on this track

28-Feb-13
Still going downhill towards the Whatipu carpark. This is a good walk.

Cheers for the cache.

23-Feb-13
I found this cache on the way back from doing a loop starting at Whatipu, north along the beach and dunes, then up to Zion's Pool cache, then back along Gibbons Track. Being in survival mode at this point, I was just focused on walking. Looking up at some point along the way, I thought to myself that this looks like it would be a good place for a cache. I checked the GPS and sure enough, I was standing 1 m away from GZ. I didn't even have to shuffle my feet to retrieve it. I’m happy to report that survival mode maintains directional integrity. Cheers for the cache.

17-Feb-13
Just heading past on a tramp, replacing the log with a new low maintenance version...

14-Feb-13
Found the mini tree on tree with it's cache. TFTC. Hot day,had a rest and a drink then off again with Trampingkiwi for our next cache.

Last minute change in our plans gave us the opportunity to attend the event but as we were too late to join up with the official cache tour party we decided to complete our own private tour.
GPS had us barking up the wrong tree for a while but located the cache eventually when it settled down TFTC.

09-Feb-13
Amazingly a group of pig hunters with GPS-radio-collared dogs had chosen to have a rest right next to the Tree in question. Chatted to them about our "orienteering" as the log got signed.

09-Feb-13
I sat and cuddled the pig dogs, trying to distract their owners while the others search for the cache. In the end the cache wasn't where we were searching but 1.5m away, right where the hunters were, so had to cover our activities with orienteering stories. TFTC

09-Feb-13
This was another easy find. Met some muggles there, which was nice. People are often very friendly, and I learnt a few things from people here. It was a nice spot, too.

09-Feb-13
Cache #3 found in a group of nine led by KiwiLeon during the Waitangi at Whatipu event. Ran into a group of muggles pig hunting with dogs at GZ. Interestingly the dogs had GPS collars on so they could locate them in the bush. It was explained to them we were "orienteering" or something similar. Thanks!

09-Feb-13
Did the walk as part of our Whatipu event.
Nice walk up and along the ridge.
No problem finding the cache with 9 GPSrs.
TFTC

09-Feb-13
Found on our walk from Whatipu to Pararaha Valley via Gibbons and Muir Tracks with Kiwileon, Mike-miss, Little Red Hood, Jacksonz, Arachnaphobe and Slieschke. Had a great time and loved the views from the various vantage points along the clifftops. Cheers.

09-Feb-13
Third stop for the day as part of the Waitangi Campout walk via Gibbons/Muir/Pararaha Stream/Beach loop. Bumped into a group of muggle hunters and their dogs right on GZ. Had a quick chat while signing the log. TFTC! Big Grin

09-Feb-13
Another "morning tea" break. We are the slow walkers behind the keen Gibbons track racers on the Whatipu event day. Little tree doing well.

03-Feb-13
Re dogs, Glad it works for you:-)
Like all signs placed by authority i just tend to take them at face value... just like stop signs.. ( "its ok officer all the locals said run it")

05-Jan-13
Continued up the hill from the last one, and as we came up to GZ, had our eyes open for what we were trying to find. Took a bit of a hunt, as we were expecting something a bit bigger, but after a closer inspection evilno9 found what we were looking for. Signed the log without disturbing anything, and carried on to the next one. TFTC

05-Jan-13
Out for a wander with lemski and ak_hazard and the non caching brother and swung by here on our journey. Had an idea of what to look for but couldn't spot it at first, back tracked a few metres and saw the wee little guy protecting the cache and the rest was easy. No damage done here and off for one more before turning back. TFTC

02-Jan-13
Saw these caches on the Gibbons track come up the other day and was sure they would go quickly but when I checked that evening, to my surprise no one had found them yet so made the decision to make an early start in the morning and have a go at them, 2nd FTF.
