WA Big Trip Winter 2024. Day 127 - Timber Creek to Katherine. The days drive was not excessive, but the temperature was. I managed to get out for four caches, and although they were all very sort walks, it was exhausting. The traffic on the road seems to have dropped off recently so that is good. I arrived in Katherine in time for lunch and set up. I then collapsed and slept for the afternoon, and night. Only a very light meal inside in the air conditioning. I hope things improve tomorrow.I pulled into this huge sopping bay car park and loaded up with sunburn cream. I only had 90m to go, but it was hot and glarey out of the car. I was happy the sign is in place and the answers required are in place. Remote signs like this often do not fair well from either sun or people. I have put together my answers and set them in.Thanks for the cache Jackylegs4448972.1 TNLNVisited: World Traveling Gold GC A#6 & 2014 Photo Frame A#300**Albida**

We stopped in to admire the scenery and get the info for this earthcache . Only did part of the walk as our time was tight. Loved the area. Tftc
OCW PelDroedGwin We stayed overnight at the roadhouse and had admired the escarpment from there, this morning we got up early to admire it from other angles. No trouble gathering the required info and we enjoyed the walk to the top. Answers sent to CO.Tftc
After admiring the scenery from here to WA, it's great to know the Geology behind its formation. Answers sent to CO. TFTC!
We made a stop along the road today to collect the information required for this cache.
The rugged cliffs had attracted our attention for many kilometers, so we were happy to stop for a break.
The climb to the lookout had been done on a previous visit.
FP given
Thanks Jackylegs44 for the EC

After spending a few days in Kununurra we hit the road again with iluvtrekking as we headed to Darwin with one overnight stop enroute. We were stunned by the amazing vistas we saw along the way - and this place is truly breathtaking. Wish we had the time to do the trail walk - oh well, its a reason to come back one day! Thanks Jackylegs44
Travelling from Perth to Darwin and beyond with richlink enjoying the spectacular scenery and interesting locations of offer. We always love a good Earth Cache, thanks Jackylegs44. The answers have been emailed.

Wow this is impressive. If only photos did it justice, glad to have seen it.
When GreyHams discovered a great deal to relocate a motor home from Broome to Darwin, things quickly slotted into place to head out for another adventure together. Three planes and a full day of travelling later we arrived in Broome, with the most amazing orange sunset out the windows of the plane.
Plenty of time to discover a few of Broomes caches and places before collecting our wheels the following morning. It slept 6 and had all the luxuries, it was huge, climbing up into it there was no going back and off we set!
The drive was full of changing scenery. Loved the Boab trees in all their different shapes and mass numbers, termite mounds and the red earth. Wildlife lined the roads, always cattle but birds, wild horses, snakes, dingo's, pigs and even buffalo! Stunning rock formations, waterways and even many little fires it was a great drive stopping for the caches as we passed... but no crocs (sad face!)
Leaving Broome we had overnight stays in Fitzroy Crossing, Kununarra and Timber Creek, great places but the highlight being the Lazy Lizard in Timber Creek. Passing through Halls Creek, Katherine and even Kakadu among many other little towns and stops along the way added to a great trip. The van was comfortable and a novel way to travel, the caches spread out over big distances a chance to stretch the legs.
Arriving into Darwin and the van returned it was into town for a few must find caches, and to explore the town, a tad warmer than we were used to at 33C!
Many thanks to all the COs of the caches we stopped at along the way and that added to the enjoyment of the trip.

Aquilus1 & I decided at short notice to add another 'crazy' trip to our growing list of adventures. Flying from Canberra to Broome and driving a 'war rig' huge campervan from Broome to Darwin. It could sleep 6! The hire itself cost almost nothing as it was on a 'relocation' deal.
We arrived too late to pick up the bus on our first day....not surprising really as it took 3 flights to get there. The hotel we stayed at in Broome at had a "competition" on the night we arrived and several barmaids in odd clothing.... "Welcome to WA" it would seem.
After picking up the battleship, we proceeded easterly on our adventure. In three days we would see Fitzroy's Crossing, Hall's Creek, Kununurra, Timber Creek, Katherine, Pine Creek, Kakadu & Darwin, as well as a lot of road.
No crocs spotted, but we did see dingo's, water buffalo, horses, lots of birds & cows.
Favourite stop by a mile was in Pine Creek, at the Lazy Lizard. Very cool and also the cheapest!
Thanks to all the CO's for placing.

On my way to Perth via Broome with a few detours for LGAs. TFTC.
Oh goodie. A 5 star terrain traditional and an Earthcache. Love a challenge. I tried to get to this one before sunset. Fail. There was still some light so off I went.
I made it to the top fairly quickly but knew it was getting dark when I needed my phone torch to find and sign the physical cache log.
Some quick photos and I was off.
Didn't get too far before I realised that I wasn't on the return track. Too many people had walked around up the top so there was no defined path.
It was now very dark and I was still at the top. I enjoyed the panic for a bit as I took many wrong routes that ended at cliff edges.
I stopped and thought "what would a cacher do". I loaded my app and there was my inward track. I had only turned it on near the top but that would be enough to get me started.
I was about 50m from the walk track. A quick find and I was on the descent. Lots of cool, interesting noises in the mountains after dark. Some very close. I quickly ran out of geo track but could now carefully follow the path out. Phone torch doesn't have much range so it took a lot longer than going up.
Another great caching adventure.

We are on the road travelling up through central Australian and down the coast of WA. I hope to grab a few caches along the way.
Grabbed the info needed for this, while taking some photos and enjoying the area. Answers sent to CO.
Thanks Jackylegs44 for placing this cache and doing the maintenance, so we can enjoy finding it.

We stopped here on our way west with iook4geo. It was too hot to do the complete walk so we took the shorter option. Love the rugged country around here and this earth cache made it more interesting. Answers were sent to the CO and we are happy to log the find. Thanks for this earth cache go to Jackylegs44.
Shared the experience here with goingplaces2 and sent joint answers to the CO. Hot today, so no long walk. TFTEC.
An awesome spot to stop and explore the magnificent landscape.

We visited this earthcache in our holidays in Australia from december to january.
The walk is a must! The views are spectacular and we liked it very much.
Since we got there in late afternoon, the heat was reasonably low and the walk was quite easy to perform

Today our tour - which began in Perth, WA , and led us thru Western, Northern and Southern Australia back to Perth, was simply driving from Timber Creek (NT) to Litchfield NP.
On the way we came to some interesting locations. Here we searched, found and logged this Tradi-Cache.
Weather was good in the morning and it should even get better during the day.
Thanks to 'Jackylegs44' for showing us this location, for the fun we had with 'Judbarra/Gregory National Park' and for the smiley. The search here and today didn't take too much time, fortunately.
Greetings from Germany and we hope to see you soon in the forest, prairie, desert or outback .

Dropped by to collect the details while on the walk up the hill. Stunning views from the path and some more interesting history. While I walked the family stayed in the car. All a bit grumpy when I got back. I told them they should have walked with me.

Travelling west on my midlife gap year AdVANture around Aus, the landscape around here took me by surprise - this must be one of NTs best kept secrets! An escarpement walk was a bit of a must, even in the midday 35° heat! Not another one of the cars/vans whizzing along the highway even bothered to stop along this stretch of road let alone attempt the climb... Their loss! The Earthcache here added to my enjoyment of the area by explaining the geology a little better, so thanks Jackylegs44!
Logging with permission from the CO.
I had 6 weeks off and spent my time heading north then west looking at this magnificent part of our country.
Somehow I picked a 39 degree day to tackle this walk but with plenty of water and a few rest breaks on the way the view was worth it at the end.
Thanks Jackylegs44 TFTEC.

I took a wander down to this one with the eldest daughter and we read the plaque and gathered the required information. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to take a longer walk. A message has been sent with our answers via the message centre.

I travelled here through the mighty Northern Territory a while ago, but logging this one now. Really enjoyed exploring around Katherine, especially the cruise up the river. Amazing stuff. This one was off the beaten track, but an interesting area here in the National Park. TFTH

We set off early in the morning just after sunrise to do the escarpment walk, and as we walked right past this sign we gathered the information for the earth cache.
A wonderful walk, a cache at the top and the opportunity to experience great views across the valleys and see the escarpments all around us. We also caught views of both the river and the road leading west.
It’s interesting to read the information about how it all was formed.

Answers sent. I must admit that I've done the escarpment walk in the past and found the geocache at the top, before this earthcache was created. Now that I've come this way again, I've had the opportunity to read about the geology behind the wonderful experience I had!

Judbarra/Gregory NP was one of these spectacular locations! Although too late during the day, thus too hot for the escarpment walk, we used the Joe Creek Picnic Area nearby to admire the area and enjoy the views and the Livinstonia Palm from the valley.

Hi there Jackylegs44 - today is a driving day from Katherine to Timber Creek. The trip was pleasant for the most part but the temperature rose after lunch and even with air conditioning inside the car it was a little bit uncomfortable. Answers have been send by email to the CO. This is our find #5045 - thanks to Jackylegs44 for this cache.
Tagging along with the "Rats" on holidays has it's advantages, not only do we get to see our cool country but we also get to do a heap of caching as Dad just can't help himself and has to stop at every cache he can.
Heading across Australia on nearly every dirt road possible we stopped and found your cache as part of our adventure and for that, I thank you! Sorry about the log being a "cut n paste" but tthats just because we stopped at so many caches.

Apologises for the late log in some cases but we are only just catching up on our logging now that we have arrived back home. Your cache makes up many of the great memories we now have from the adventure. The faceplate style log doesn't detract from the experience we had finding the cache.
Thanks

We are continuing to travel across northern Australia from one side to the other after attending the Red Centre Experience over Easter. We left our camp at Victoria River Roadhouse early today and after climbing to the top of the walk, I gathered the required information which I will send to the CO when we have service again in a couple of days. Thanks for placing this cache to draw attention to the area. I must admit I enjoy the local cultural explanation of the formation of this area too!
After having a very pleasant day's caching in Katherine it was time to head west and pick up some caches between here and Timber Creek.
We arrived here about three o'clock in the afternoon, when we saw the sign saying a walk we started to lose a little interest as 3km in this heat wasn't our idea of fun anymore and we were about to take off when Diane read through the cache page once more and realised that ti was a lot less then three km's that we had to walk. We wandered off to gz and collected the required information before taking quite a few pictures of this stunning area.
Next time we had service we emailed our answers off to the CO and we were very happy with prompt permission to log..
Many thanks Jackyleggs44 for the cache, a favourite point from us.

Hi - I loved this journey to the top looking over the escarpment and landscape below. The variety of flora that has adapted and crated this habitat is also fantastic. So, Over millions of years seas have risen and fallen and layers of sedimentary rock have formed from the laying down of sand and silt. Periodically, uplifting and faults caused weakening lines and cracks in the sedimentary rocks The effect of weathering and erosion impact of wind and water over millions of years has formed the great valleys in the landscape we see today. 2 and 3. The weathering process known as "laterisation" removes silica and alkalies resulting in a concentration of the red iron and aluminium oxides on the tops that we see crowning the escarpments as

Took a drive out here for this cache. Easy to gather information. We didn't walk to the top this time, but have done so previously. A spectacular view from the top and also a dramatic landscape from below. Thanks for the earth cache, Jackylegs44.
Happy to see an Earth Cache placed here. We came through here about the same time last year and completed the walk, which was spectacular. The scenery was amazing and well worth the effort of making the walk to the top. Would have loved to repeat the walk however were a bit limited for time this trip. Will send response to questions.

What a fascinating area Gregory NP is. Full marks to the CO for not forcing us to walk up to the top which would be many steps too far for these old legs. Besides which, we're southerners & even at this time of the year it's far too hot just standing around. Answers will be emailed off shortly. Thanks Jackylegs44.

Today is day 22 of an adventure that will take me around Australia with a group of trackables. My caches visited can be tracked by checking out the Key Ring using the code TB4P4C1.
Back on the bitumen after 3 days of dirt. Another 3 days and we will have over a week of it again. We will enjoy this bit of highway driving. It's the places people take you to with their cache placements that inspires you to explore our great Country.
Running late, left a few caches for next time but had to do this one. Always great to learn about the Geology of the area.
As a part of my contribution to helping make the "Easter 2017 Red Centre Experience" GC6825Z a great Event, I will be leaving a card in every cache that is large enough to take it. This card provides a number for a trackable so you can "Discover me". There is also the Web page address "red.ozmega.com.au".
Happy caching.

Visited with Wazza9 on our way West, tooooo hot for the walk, interesting cache. Thanks to lackylegs44
On the way from Katherine to region Timber Creek, we needed a break.
So we did the escarpment walk to the top and enjoyed the beautiful view.
On the way back, we saw a small wallaby near the way.
Thanks for this cache.

Our current visit to Australia had been in the planning for over a year with the very significant help and advice from friends who live in Melbourne. The original plan was for a 2 month visit, but as things progressed we just couldn't help extending our trip to the full 90 days allowed on our visas - after all it's a big country and so much to see and do, especially with our favourite pastimes being birding, hiking and of course geocaching! Our journey started with our arrival at Perth airport followed by a day cycling around Rottnest Island before travelling on to Adelaide where we met up with our friends. We then continued on to spend some time on Kangaroo Island, before heading to Melbourne via Goolwa, Strathalbyn, Coorong, Mount Gambier, Cape Bridgewater, the Grampians National Park, Port Campbell, Cape Otway and Lorne, cramming in as much as possible on route. The second leg of our journey was a fabulous 9 days in Tasmania. Having then returned to Melbourne we set off on the third leg of our journey, which was to Sydney via Wilson’s Promontory, Lakes Entrance, Mallacoota, Pambula Beach, Thredbo, Canberra and Fitzroy Falls. We then spent a few days in Sydney with geocaching friends efore flying on to the Gold Coast for the fourth leg of our travels, that included visits to Lamington National Park, Noosa and an overnight trip out to Fraser Island. We then flew from Brisbane to Cairns, where we spent a couple of nights before heading out to the birding hotspots of Yungaburra and Daintree. Following on from a visit to Cape Tribulation we turned to Port Douglas. After a day out on the Great Barrier Reef we returned to Cairns for the flight to Alice Springs and the fifth leg of our travels, which was a wonderful week driving the circuit to and from Ayers Rock in our 4x4 camper. On returning to Alice Springs we then flew on to Darwin, where we picked up another 4x4 camper. We are currently making our way towards Broome via Kakadu, Cooinda, Katherine Gorge, Kununarra, Lake Argyle, Emma Gorge, the Bungle Bungle’s and Fitzroy Crossing. Our last two nights in Australia will be spent in Broome before we fly back to Perth, from where we will connect with the flight all the way back home to Zimbabwe via South Africa. We already know we can't wait to return!
We thoroughly enjoyed the Escarpment Hike to the two lookouts at sunset, and so we earned our terrain rating on this one. The views were great but unfortunately we didn't get to see the White-quilled Rock-pigeon that we had hoped to find on our hike (although we did two days later!) Answers sent to the CO - many thanks for the cache!

I am so grateful you posted this Earthcache. We had been marvelling at the Rock caps for a while and wondering what on earth could do that. Now we know! So interesting to think all this happened millions and millions of years ago - gotta love Mother Nature she sure like to put on a show. Unfortunately as we were driving from Lake Argyle to Katherine we hit this spot in the middle of the day so the walk was beyond the teams capabilities.
Yay a FTF ...... or is that FTL (log?)
Thanks Jackylegs for placing this earth cache here. This is one of my favourite drives through this region..... stunning countryside.
