Went back for a third look around after seeing the confirmation it's still there, and success! As with kan0e I would have went past that spot many times. Unfortunately I forgot a pen and cache was quite wet inside so did not get to add my name to logbook. TFTC!
. 2237. A huge thank you to the CO for checking on the cache. If it hadn't been checked I probably would not have returned nor would I have persevered in searching as long as I did. I'm near certain I checked the hiding spot at least four times. FP for a good older puzzle cache but also for checking! Cache could use a dryout. Signed the back of the logbook. TFT(jump around)C.
Considering my profession, this was a quicker solve than most puzzle caches. Two sets of eyes at GZ and no joy today.
Had a good root around all the trees and rocks at the final coords but no luck . Will have to come back again after it has been found and hopefully moved somewhere slightly easier to find
Up this way again with ABCDF4 and KGD to clean out a area again but the weather not looking the bestVery wet log but thanks for the cache
Up in Auckland with EyespyBen and KGDWeather was not the bestVery wet log bookBut a great hideThanks CO
This cache had be bouncing around before finally getting some coordinates. Up with ABCDF4 and eyespyben for the day (at least until the rain set in) Mrs ABCDF4 did the signing on a very wet log book. Well an extra bit of paper with our signatures was added. Thank you for the placement.
4th cache of the day - a pretty quick find for us at GZ. I hadn't been down this way before, so thanks for placing the final here Cool idea for a puzzle too. TFTP and TFTC!
Another great Teamwork caching day with lumin298! I was able (finally) to collect some hides for Reach the Peak souvenir called Aconcagua. We collected some great hides today. This one was one of them.
It was good this this old hide in such a great condition.

Needed some help solving this one !
Was tidying up some papers and found where I had written the final co ords...so came here today as was out with nette1234 finding some other trads and puzzle solves in the area.
Nette soon located it...
Was amazed to see what good condition the cache was in!
Hard to believe it has been here since 2005.
Thanks tofska.
I have never been down this pathway before....was a cool adventure!
Cheers for another of your amazing puzzle caches...

This one came up on one of our calls on zoom during lockdown. Now I know where it is, I decided to head out this way to collect a few solved caches today, this was the first along the way, TFTC
Just like the previous finder, I originally looked at this puzzle and thought “naw”...
However during the lockdown, I was on a puzzle solving spree and after a quick message to the CO and a message like “hey, it’s actually pretty easy”.
He was right. About 15 minutes later I had good coords and the puzzle solved.
Thanks for the mathematical puzzle!
Amazing how good of condition this cache is in considering its age.
The cache is safe, but watch you approach, one side has a fallen tree making the area hard to manage, but from the other side it’s practically free and clear!

I have put this puzzle in the too hard basket, then decided to pick it up and try again. No one was more suprised than me to get a green tick. Never been in this area before, nice spot.
Welll this puzzle has been picked up many times and back in the to hard basket. Got it out a little while back and was challenged but managed to solve. Very pleased to finally sign it off. Beautiful walk in such a nice area thx.
With part of Team BOP - (Mr) Davidson clan, McJandals, and NZFlossy... All logs were signed RoT - Rotorua or Tauranga. We have been planning this mini raid of Auckland for a short time. We have discovered that we need a small push to kick onto our next milestone. Hopefully, this weekend's haul of caches will bring us a little closer...
We decided to focus much of our attention on Te Atatu this weekend. The sheer number of caches, the walkability factor, and the rumor of some high quality caches sounded appealing... We also agreed to stay together on the trail rather than split up - This proved to be a good idea considering the reputation and hiding prowess of the COs in this area. Four pairs of eyes didn't miss much...
And then that time arrived to head for home. It’s been a great weekend of caching, and we are that much closer to our mission target... We have a few solved puzzles to visit before leaving Auckland... This puzzle has always given us grief. We had a few ideas but struggled to get anywhere with it... We recently got a big nudge, and after a few attempts, got the confirmation that we had the solve... The next challenge involved finding access to ground zone. A short walk from our vehicle, and we had hands on this older hide. Thanks M@. TFTP and TFTC.

Wow that was a hard puzzle took us quite a while to solve this puzzle but eventually got there.

This morning one took a real team effort awhile ago to solve and luckily we had a mathematician in our group. On an Auckland adventure with three other BOP cachers. An early start with lots of fun and a night in the big smoke. I don’t venture up here very often but we were on a mission. Thanks to the COs for some great caches and puzzles Signed as Team ROTTFTC
On a road trip with part of Team BOP which includes myself, NZ Flossy, Squirrel Nutcase and Davidson Clan. To save room we have signed ROT and I am logging using the Cachly app template so please excuse generic logging along the way. It’s just my way of keeping track, but I do genuinely thank each and every one of you cache owners for taking the time and energy to place these caches. Many Thanks for bringing us here. Cheers I remember nearly pulling my hair out with this, finally with a bit of teamwork we got there.
I had a fair idea what to do for this puzzle, and managed to get quite far. However, I hit a snag and eventually had a hint on what I needed to do to finally get the answer. Was finally in the area, so made the detour to stop for this cache.
Thankfully GZ was nice and quiet, so that I could make a quick find.

I had to have a LOT of help understanding the solve to this one. Math is not a strong point of mine and it took quite some considerable time to understand what needed to be done to get the green tick but with a lot of coaching I got there. I had the day off today and as it was a stunning spring day I decided to pick up a few caches that were on my hit list. I'd not been to this area before but enjoyed the walk and was lucky to find the cache in the first place I looked. The cache is in great condition and nice and dry considering it's been here for nearly 14 years!
Found it today! I've solved the puzzle almost one year ago and I had a brief unsuccessful attempt back then when I went together with my 2 yo son - so not much time and mobility for me Today I went alone and it took me around 5 minutes to find it! This was the first entry on my GC "to do" list as is the closest to my new home. The box is clean and dry inside. TFTC!
I solved this puzzle a while back using Perl, but then came to GZ and couldn't find the cache. I returned today with a cacher who recently solved the puzzle and found the cache. Somehow I was able to find the cache this time. TFTC.
This was a very hard puzzle for us to solve, we started out using google sheets which was even more frustrating than it normally is so in the end switched to excel which was better. Noone could claim that maths is my strong point so I sent my workings over to a previous solver who explained what I was doing wrong. Reworked it but it was still not producing a set of coordinates, so I resorted to browsing the functions in excel and finally found one that seemed to do the trick. Even better, got a tick from the geochecker!
We were in the vicinity this evening as Mrs Tuolei was getting dinner for Albert the geohound nearby, so we made it a dual purpose trip to walk Albert and look for this. Nice walk down here on a beautiful evening and got to GZ. Quite a few places to look but in the end we got quite lucky and the cache was spotted from the correct angle. Bit longer to retrieve but got there in the end. Always lovely to find an original container and even better, an original logbook from an old cache.
Took the time to read some of the stories and wrote our own before carefully replacing the cache. The cache is in excellent condition. Thanks very much for the challenging puzzle.

I spent a bit of time trying to work this one out; I am usually okay at this sort of puzzle but something was not right in this case. I consulted a family member who has a bit more experience in this sort of thing and he also initially struck the same problems; but with a bit of research (and a fair bit of time spent) came up with the answer after discovering what was needed to get the calculations right in the tool we were using.
Had just enough time today to call in and make the grab before off to work. Took a few minutes to locate as there was an accumulation of debris after not being found for a while but cache was foundand is still in really good condition. Thanks for the challenging puzzle - FP added. TFTC.

Being OK at maths especially trig and stuff decided to get into this and solve it quickly. Tried to be a bit too clever and it was only after some time that I resorted to the scientific calculator to try an understand why I was getting wrong answers. Light bulb moment and then reworked the formula. Had forgotten about the rad conversion. Once that was figured copied a series of formulas into excel and voila, it performed perfectly. Finding the cache though was another matter. Had the spot sussed but we had to work hard to locate it. Glad we use to live nearby and had visited the area in the past, so we had a bit of an idea about how to get here without tramping a very long way.
We briefly looked at this puzzle years ago when we first started caching . . . and quickly moved on to easier puzzles to solve. Don't know why it has taken us so long to take another look, but this time we were determined to solve it. And this time around the maths seemed more do-able, and so began the long task of doing the repetitions manually in Excel. The first attempt or two were aborted after errors were found in our work, so we started afresh for the (lucky) third time. After doing the calculations multiple times over, we could see that we were definitely getting closer to the final coordinates. After the last iteration confirmed we had our single value, we converted them and entered them into the geochecker with some trepidation. A great feeling to get that 'Success!'
Today we set out to finally turn this questionmark into a smilie. We were not sure of the best access to GZ, but chanced upon it fairly easily. Made the shortish walk to GZ, and began to search. We could see we were in the right place, but it took quite a while for one of us to finally pin down the cache. Very happy to sign the log of this one. Thanks for a challenging puzzle.

Solved the puzzle yestarday and couldn't resist to visit the place today. It took a while to find this one. Parked the bike just 2 meters from cache, but looked for it some 15 minutes! Thanks for this old cache and greetings from Latvia!

Following the cache page details I couldn't get a sensible answer out of google sheets, so manually plug and played it into an online scientific calculator, slow but more satisfying getting a manual solve .
As we were walking to GZ pulled out the GPSr to discover I had only loaded Traditionals onto it from GSAK, doh! Nevermind GC.com has the corrected coords, out comes the Android phone, pull up the cache page and navigate to the corre... eh? where'd they go?! Refresh, nope. Hmmm... M pulls out her iPhone and bling, there's the coorected coords flag. Weird, oh well off we set. Bump into some muggle friends out for a walk in the area and introduce them to the world of geocaching. A short walk later and we were in the area of the GZ with several likely spots, B soon had a rather cobwebby cache in hand!
Huzzah! Over a year and a half since this was last found and it's still in it's hiding place Interior of cache nice and dry too.

Finally I have solved this! I could not for the life of me a spreadsheet to calculate this, should've paid more attention in school! Eventually solved via manually entering into an online scientific calculator and using the tried and true rinse and repeat until the numbers aligned and the geochcecker gave me the green tick of success! Now to find the cache at some stage TFTP!
Whew! Very relieved to finally get this puzzle off my to do list. I had looked at it in the past but failed to see it through to completion. I think I must have missed the significance of degrees and radians before now. So last week, I managed to construct a spreadsheet that pretty soon led to the right answer. Up in Auckland for a couple of days work this week so decided to stop off on my way into the city to try to find this cache. Found a possible entry point and followed that along to where the cache was hiding. I initially overshot GZ by a few metres but after a while my GPS settled and took me to the right spot. I was lucky to get at the right angle to spot the cache quite quickly and all was well. TFTC, Biggles.
This was a fun puzzle, even though I didn't do the calculations by hand

Day 3 of my trip to Auckland for the Mega event. Today I was focussing on finding the puzzles that I had spent months solving in the lead-up to the event. I ended up at the far end of Dominion road before returning to Albany where I attended the Mega event. I then returned back to the far end of Dominion Road to finish off what I had started in the morning.
After spendng the first part of the afternoon at the far end of Dominion Road I started heading back toward the city. I have no idea how many trads I passed or how many km's I had travelled. I didn't quite get the maths right so ended up with a series that didn't resolve itself. A quick correction and out came the co-ords. I managed to get a park near the viewing platform which then lead to a path that took me right to GZ. I had to leave because of a few muggles but they were gone when I returned. At GZ I stumbled around a bit before spoting the cache in buried quite deeply. All is good.

OMG!!! I just realised that I solved this puzzle cache over a year ago. Well 15 months ago to be exact. Although I tried to collect this one a couple of times in the past, I just couldn't work out how to get to the GZ. I do remember driving around and around the park trying to find an entrance that wasn't closed. As such I came to conclusion that the cache had probably been muggled due to the nearby construction currently underway.
However today was another story... After collecting another puzzle cache, I decided to give this one another go on the drive home. This time I found an entrance that although a good distance away, should at least provide some sort of access to the GZ. Fortunately my theory was correct and I soon had the GZ in sight. Also fortunately my GPSr was spot on and I the cache was quickly found. Overall a very satisfying day! TFTC!

Very handy working in an engineering office as I had my trusty scientific programmable calculator at hand although a spreadsheet could [with some learning on my part] well have done the same job !! At first I noticed the result lat and long figures on my calculator fluctuating far more than they should be - and then realised - duh - put the machine in DEGREE mode!
Before long I had a pair of figures and the cache a quick find once i arrived at gz.
Thx for a very interesting challenge, tftc

I don't think I'd looked at this cache before! It must have somehow missed my view or something, but I looked at it Thursday afternoon when I was meant to be writing up an assignment that was due...
Instantly made obvious sense, and I even had it solved using excel within about 5 minutes!! - Though there was a momentary hiccup when I didn't realise something about some of excels functions, but that was quickly fixed up, and I had a solutions!!
Today wanted to make a 'quick' stop by here on my way to the gym... as if quick!! Huge works going on!! I finally managed to get a park, though not where I was expecting by google maps, and then tried to wonder over to GZ. But doing so, it actually felt like I was in some completely futuristic, post-apocalyptic world, and I was on the non-rich people side... Seriously, take a wonder to the GZ early in the morning, and you will know what I mean. The fact that the weather was so gross fully helped that illusion too! It was kinda awesome... my imagination ran so wild!! - I would describe the other things that made it seem more like that, but I'm scared that would give GZ away!!
Well, I did manage to make it to the GZ, and then once there, I bounced across the GZ too, before finally settling in on the place where the cache had landed.

Found with mike-miss after the Skills Day event. This puzzle stretched my Excel skills, and I needed to get the cache owner to check my work. Turned out one of my formulae was wrong. Tftc and good puzzle!
Out and about with stretch.kerr after the skills day event. We had both solved this one so we thought that it would be a good idea to close this one off. Arrived at GZ in the dark and pouring rain to make a pretty quick find in a nice and secure spot. TFTC and the strain on this one to finally get the success on the geochecker!
Solved this one a couple of days ago after establishing that, a) it could all be done on a scientific calculator (I'm sure I did this at school) and b) I found electronic means to reduce the data entry to very little but actually produce sound results. Once I had my pinballs in a row it was simply a task of running through the iterations without making a blunder...Oh, that is a blunder...try again...Got it!
The tree felling has moved on from GZ and the cache is accessible again. But it looks like some other type of work is now being done very close to GZ. Relatively quick find of the actual cache.
Cheers for the puzzle and the cache!

Hooray for Excel! It made this problem very easy. I accidentally ran this through once in Radians...oops! Did a simple rework of the formulas and voila! I had a pleasant Sunday morning walk and found the cache pretty easily. This was a very satisfying puzzle to solve. TFTC!
4250 Solved this puzzle quite sometime ago but only in the area today cleaning up some puzzle caches. TFTPC
Couldn't get this one to work at all. Then had the inspiration to try swapping the "Long" in the second formula for a "Lat" and it worked out (tofska has now fixed this). Note that Excel has a RADIANS() function to convert the degrees to radians before you COS() it. Got there after sunset as it was starting to get dark, but luckily it's not too difficult a find once you're in the right spot. TFTC.

Finally back in the area with Snakelion and this time after being a bit more curious made the find. Funny how that works... Picked up a few scratches for my efforts due to the recent felling in the area but that's all part of the fun. Thanks again M@ for the update and the puzzle, and the cache! Grabbed the event GC which I'll bring along with me to TT's event this weekend.
Out with evilno9 for this one again. we made a point of finding this one and we got it!!! evilno9 made the find. the area was pretty good hide for the cache and it seems the cache is in a very safe place .

Yes, there has been some tree cutting going on and is hindering access a bit. A likely spot is visible to a curious geocacher though before stepping in to retrieve the cache. I've increased the terrain rating.
Cheers, M@

Had a good time with the puzzle and made the trip out with Snakelion to complete the formalities but were denied when we got there. It appears a bit of tree work has been done right where the arrow was pointing and the only real likely spot seemed to be in conflict with the terrain rating. It could be that we were put off by the recent work and missed an obvious find but we had to come back empty handed this time.

Maths wasn't too bad but getting to the cache took more iterations than the puzzle. Was 80m at one stage but needed to rebound to the other side to score the point. Another kind of ball game going on just through the trees & I was trying to be very stealthy until someone sent me a txt
Thanks for the puzzle and the cache M@

Nice puzzle but had to call on some long unused grey matter to solve it. Little bit of an error initially, same as others have made it seems but soon had that sorted and got the necessary result.
Surprised to be the first visitor of the year but found cache nice and dry (unlike myself in this horrid weather) and in good order.
-GC Many thanks

At last, with a little help got this one solved and was found with little trouble at all.

Spotted from a distance - it kind of stands out a bit. Easy find.

Dropping off the Question Mark geocoin #13.
As you can tell from the logs, it is a lot more efficient to use a spreadsheet to solve this puzzle - repeating the formulas on each row for each iteration. Now that Google Docs (http://docs.google.com) is here, everyone has access to a spreadsheet .
Hope this helps - M@

It took us longer to calculate the iterative sequence than to actually find the cache. We were glad that it was on the muggle-free side of the fence.

I had solved this one some time ago, but didn't have the opportunity to check the solution was correct (physically) until today.
I couldn't entice the younger members to go for a sail, so we came over to Mt Albert to visit the greater Candy Clan.
Grandma, Dads, Dog and a gaggle of overexcited cousins set off in search of nearby Caches.
A brief walk in what used to be an old quarry and salvage dump, when I was a kid. Much tidyier now, an inspiration for people trying to reclaim old areas.
AC was right on the GZ, unearthing the cache to a crowd of admiring cousins.

Solved this one last week with the aid of an excel spreadsheet. Geochecker confirmed the coordinates as good. Easy find, once the correct entrance to the park was found. First time, we parked on the wrong side of the creek.

Solved from afar (eventually), though my "spreadsheet from hell" was not a pretty sight and had given me not a small amount of trouble due to formulae not being correctly filled down 3 of 4 columns - I had the correct lat and long answers on my first line but every iteration from then on was incorrect . Finally after much checking and adjustment the lat and longs converged nicely and the calculated coords proved to be 'spot on' so it was a quick and easy signing of the logbook. Thanks for another of your great math puzzle caches M@. I look forward to more of your challenges. TNLN. Cheers.
The Geochecker coords seem to have gone wrong for some reason, so I've reset them. Sorry if you've been trying this recently - try again!

Kept on putting this one aside, those equations looked scary. Finally, assuming a devil-may-care attitude, tried the spreadsheet approach - not too difficult, stopped bouncing after about 22 iterations. Gotcha, I thought, until Geochecker said No! Rechecked everything to get same answer, so being closeby today, called in for a search. Well, the eTrex lead me straight to the cache, found within seconds. What's with that?

A bit muddy today. It's quite wierd coming to places that i've checked out in Google earth first - they seem smaller if anything. That's scarey! TNLN, thanks.
The calculations complete, I set out to find the cache. Fortunately the calculations and GPS agreed to the mm, making the find very easy. Took Zorkmid Geocoin, Left Tuatara.
Found with no GPS and some help from a mathematically minded friend. Creek had flooded up over the footpath after heavy rain. Thanks for the challenge, some caches need to be really complex!

After caclculating this one the coords put it well south of what I thought it should be. Checked with M@, found they were wrong, checked my formulas and found that I had put the conversion in the wrong place. Re-calc'd, sent to M@ for confirmation. All this was done 2 weeks ago.
So off I went and found the cache in it's great little hidey hole - GPS took me right there. It's a great feeling when you worked something out and its spot on.

First mathematical problem attempted. Turned out to be 300m away from my home. Did enlist some help with the calculas. kaimai, and skiff in on this one. Spotted it first.
First find of the day. Was nice and easy once we had the coordinates. Got these with a little help from a maths teacher. Nice spotting by Outdoor Anne to find the box with awesome treasures in.
A nice easy easy find once the problem was solved by a maths teacher! Outdoor Annie found this one with great stuff in!
Solved this one easily last night. Well mostly easily. First time it wouldn't converge. Oh silly, I needed to convert the degrees to radians in the spreadsheet! Quickly solved after that. Easy drive out this morning to the site and quickly found. No exchange made. Placed a rock in front of the cache to provide a little more protection from muggles on the track. Cheers Gav [667]
found it second go - first time I also had an issue with the creek and ran out of time - second go was all good - the muggles with the houses opposite must wonder some days though

This was good fun, plenty of exercise finding a place to get across the creek... and then getting back to the car via a shortcut... which wasn't.

Did the maths for this way back in January when the cache was first placed. Although the equations resolved the coordinates seemed to far away,(this was in my first weeks of caching [:o)]) so filed it for a while. Last night I gathered the courage to open the spreadsheet again looked at the last lines and realised all I was missing was the final conversion. Just had to get it today it couldn't wait another.

I've got a bit of a backlog of Tofska's cache to do so time to get onto it.
I'd had a couple of goes at the Maths at work using Excel and then forgot about it. Sorted out the maths this afternoon at home, calculated the co-ords and went straight there - absolutely spot on.
Given that the cache hasn't been visited for a while it all looks OK.
Left eye candy (very appropriate given Magic Eye) and took the light.
Thanks

Did the maths in Excel - then walked 2.5km to get to the cache from our home (getting ready for Round-the-Bays) - found it with no majors, but like Navigull, our GPS pointed us to the wrong "place" at first. Thanks M@

Another case of doing the math straight away (although
no Excel for me!) and then waiting for a trip to Auckland.
Better choice of access than last cache (only 150m vs
1500m). Was suspicious guy loitering on other side of
creek, so we had a Mexican-standoff of looking innocent,
but he wandered away first. Thanks M@ for the caches.

Coordinates spot on. I used the same approach as ags to determine the actual coords of the cache. TNLN, thanks.
jasons maths seem to on the "ball" as usual (sorry for the pun) found it quite quickley. thanks M@ - JDHnz loves your maths quizzes
Finally got off my lazy arse and stuck the formulas in Excel. Turns out this was astonishingly easy compared to your others M@. I think this is the first time in my life I haven't made a typo the first time 'round in an important spreadsheet too!
Sarah found it, but the waypoint was amazingly accurate.
Thanks for some more fun M@.

Started from the wrong side of the natural hazard and no easy way through so hopped back in the car and entered from the right place this time. Enjoyed solving the problem. Thanks.
