Logs
This cache has been missing for 2-1/2 years with many promises to maintain but no follow through. It is time for it to RIP.
Over 2 months since the last CO's write note. Seems the CO doesnt want to make any attempt to rectify this cache and make it enabled again for cachers to find.
No need to archive this, it IS coming back.
Time has been an issue.
It is part of a 15 cache series, so archive this one and 14 other 10 year old cache will be lost forever!
Interesting to note, that the one asking for this to be archived was GIVEN the final gz coords so he could finish the series, but doesn't seem to want others to have the same opportunity!
I will endeavour to re-new the WHOLE series over this summer!

Thought it would be cool to put a new TB in a newly re-activated cache, to attract finders to it. However when I got home to re-activate the cache, I found I had some wildly in-accurate co-ordinates for the new waypoint. (which is where the TB was placed and why AnyMules didn't find it.)
Went back to the cache today to fix the co-ordinates issue of the new waypoint and came across a proximity issue with another cache, retrieved the TB so there is less delay for other cachers to discover it.
My sincerest apologies to the CO for this delay, as I am fully aware of how sought after it must be (3 watchers), even though I retrieved it from a 5/5 (for silver) after others left there and no-one has been for a smiley since.
I will endeavour to place it ASAP, but as we all know, family and work come along way before geocaching.
My sincerest apologies to those with a watch on this and the TB. The TB will be placed 1st thing tomorrow (after family and work commitments).
Thanks for your patience...

Seeing this one had some CO attention and contained a sought after TB, I headed down to this beautiful part of the world and set off to my previously calculated coordinates. Reaching GZ, I spent a good 40 minutes searching and being stuck 17000 times by acacia bush prickles. After the long and unfruitful search I headed off to another cache, then stopped at this one again on the return trip to search again. After more unsuccessful searching, I messaged the CO who confirmed what I had started thinking. This multi is being changed a bit and is not quite ready to be done yet. After a peasant chat, I continued back up the hill to the geomobile and headed off on the next adventure. I look forward to returning to these parts again in the near future to continue my search for this elusive cache again.
Came here today to finally get this up and running.
New waypoint containers and new final stash.
Alas came unstuck with coords of one of the waypoints.
Hopefully can get back on weekend to fix/finish.
Patience this one is close now!

Thanks
Walked right near GZ for this one today. But alas, as the cache is not there, I will have to do it all over again when this cache is returned. This is my closest to home unfound cache.
Will get to this one and the others nearby asap.
They have been out over 10 years now for many finders to find, so time for an upgrade of the whole series.
All of the cache in this series will be upgraded/replaced over the next few months, including the multi that a faceless/anonymous logger reported!
Then hopefully they will be all good for another 10 years.

Checked on this one, finally, today.
I have retrieved the cache. After 8 1/2 years in the wild it has succumbed to the elements!
Original logbook is still in great shape though.
This will be back online soon, after tweaking some of the WPs, starting with the bloody gate numbers!
Stay tuned....

Either im doing something wrong or clues need fixing but WP1 is nowhere near this parklands.
Finally after years of contemplation and half efforts, I got serious with this one. Had to get some assistance from Hurtle, but it feels good to get this one under my belt. Thanks Mark.

Thanks to Onka Octet for the running repairs. This one should have been re-enabled ages ago..

First for the day and it's always good to start with a find .
After walking the loop back in April without success , we were able to get the required info for GZ from the CO and (finally) made our return trip today .
A damn prickly spot to get to as well [:o)]!
TNLNSL. Unfortunately, the lid to the container has a big hole in it , so replaced the cach upside down on a 45° angle to keep the water out (log book is still dry).
Thanks Huurtle. Now off to our first mystery of the series .

The aptly named 'Onka Octet' that consisted of e.gregory1, FeatherWaite, Freddo, Malco!, MtnLioness, Mr Scoobster, TigerMuffin and *Cache_or_Check* were out for the day caching in the beautiful Onkaparinga Gorge area.
It was wet, chilly and very slippery due to the abundance of stupid Soursobs that resist most every effort expensive shoes try to grip their surroundings and stop you from falling amidst their bright sunny faces. I never fell, not once, but I heard the frog fall a number of times much to the amusement of all.
Lovely area, the exertion was getting harder, the breaths were getting shorter.

Found on a very eventful and entertaining day of hiking in Onkaparinga River NP with *Cache_or_Check*, e.gregory1, Freddo, Malco!, MtnLioness, a Scoobster and Tiger Muffin. Cool and showery meant the ground was slippery and the grass continually wet; there were steep descents, river crossings, slippery rocks, and strenuous ascents; an awesome day out with plenty of banter, fantastic views of the Onkaparinga Gorge and great caches. Thanks for the cache Huurtle!
Found on another great day out around Onkaparinga Gorge with FeatherWaite, Freddo, Malco!, MtnLioness, Mr Scoobster, TigerMuffin and *Cache_or_Check*. Thanks TeamHurtle for the cache.
WOW.. WHAT A DAY!!..
I was invited out to join the group on a 'casual stroll around the tracks'... so I was happy to say yes.. then the notificaitons came through "bring wet weather gear, good hiking boots, arrive at 7am and bring about 4 days worth of food and water' :O WHAT THE??
But Mr Scoobster being the intrepid adventurer complied.
Spent a wonderful day doing some great caches in the Onk Hills.. Great multis'.. with some great views and some very interesting cache stories.
Have never cached in this area and it was nice to tick some of these more difficult ones off the list.
Thanks for brigning us to this wonderful location.

After a few short ventures inside the gorge and one big adventure down the Porosa track, it was time for today's main course: The Sundews trail and all the lies beyond.
It took a bit of zig zagging to get to the cache but once at GZ we were very pleased to be able to add our names to the list of finders, the last of whom were seen last here over 2,5 years ago!
We were fortunate enough to be in the company of a previous finder as WP3 is definitely gone. The Final coordinates were added to the structure with (hopefully) indelible ink, so future finders can make their way to the final GZ as well.

With some assistance from a previous finder (frogs are handy to have around), we were able to check on a few things and make some running repairs. The poor unloved cache was located and the log creaked open and a few small moths flew out. Over 2.5 years since it last saw daylight.
Sundews a plenty at GZ, even in flower. Beware, they are carnivorous!! The Onka Octet continued its journey along Sundews Ridge, spotting a large mob of roos taking in the calm weather by sitting on a patch of long grass. Spectacular walking trail!! TFTC Huurtle.

It's easy to see how this track got its name as there are sundews carpetting GZ - so many that you can't avoid stepping on them. A wandering ant would have no chance and would end up as a meal for these plants
Without any tips on the missing information, we had to rely on a previous finder to fill in the gaps. Running repairs were made.
Thanks for the cache, Huurtle

Despite knowing what the original gate number was, none of the rest of the numbers seemed to add up for us. We came up with coordinates that were way too far away from this area.
Looks like this needs some tlc. Been over two years since it was found correctly! Sorry Disk.
Will get there in next couple of weeks to re-tweek all points.
In meantime, if anyone wants to do the loop drop me an email for some wp info to help you along.

Not really a DNF, as much as a 'could not start .'
We hate multi's, and this one proved it once again [xx(].
Did the calcs at the gate, but couldn't get anything to work properly, that is unless the cache is several kilometres away [?]. We revised one of the numbers at the trail board (we've had this problem before - all the gate numbers have changed in the last few years around here), but still couldn't get them to work [B)].
Anyway, we went off and did Captain's log - Day 4, then rejoined the loop further along, looking at likely WP spots mentioned in the clue [:o)]. Even though a couple looked really good, still came up with nothing .
We'll contact the CO to see if he can show us where we went wrong (Maybe this is why it hasn't been found since 2011) [?].
A great little loop to walk around anyway , hi-lighting the different geology of the gorge and revegetation since the fire went through here [^].
Thank Huurtle. We'll be back . . .

We found it in the end, but not through the waypoints. We got one wrong and that was it. We decided to go for a walk through this, one of our favourite tracks. When we reached one point, I remembered comments in previous logs and realised this was the end point. A little bit of hunting and we had success! So if you don't want to know where the end is, be careful what you read! We went with muggle friends and their kids. I supplied the kids with trinkets they could swop things and they had a ball, so I am really glad we were able to find the cache. I think these muggles may soon not be muggles!!
This find has been a while in the making, with a number of returns moving me along the way to the cache including: WP2 missing, not able to find WP3, and then the GPSr batteries dying 100 metres short of the cache.
I remember admiring the views on the numerous walks to finish this cache.
Today was the day, however I would have wasted a lot of time here as my final coords seemed to be a bit off. The SBI pointed me in the right direction.
Thanks for the cache TeamHurtle.

Found with SushiLord on an attempt to do the entire series in a day. We cheated a bit, as we had both previously done the walk and went straight to the final which had evaded sushilord on many occasions. Nice place to start the day.
Found it good hidden safely.Lovely walking Loop .Saw Koala walking across the trail and took photo cute koala.Took Gecoin. L.N.S.L.

Great walk, but I made a bit of a mess of finding the interim way points. I got a little red arrow disease and ended up totally lost, so headed to the lookout first and then onto the 2nd way point
Although i had to retrace my steps finishing the cache, it was a view I didn't mind seeing again.
Great cache, great view, and great fun

thanks

He He He. Oops.
Yeah, wrong track. But the roos were so tame and beautiful... And led us up the garden path.
But all paths go somewhere, and we eventually found the loop track. Then things went bad again. I do not have discalculia, and I do have a maths degree, but somehow decided that 6 and 8 are in fact the same number. At least by some fluke I realised my error at the waypoint!
More roos, beautiful greys, and plenty of botanical variety. A great walk.
Oopsies count: 4
Cache count: 2
Roo count: 50
Can't count: ME!

Guess we really should have done this a long time ago, but for some reason we haven't. Now A wants to know why I haven't shown her the area before now. Oh well, just as well it's only 13 days until we move!
A late decision to go for a walk tonight, but we had an early dinner, and made our way up the road.
Found the information at WP1 easily. Took a look at the sign, and saw the way we should go...
We spotted 15 skippy's down at the dam, and got to within 2m of one, very tame!
From there we went wrong, and ended up a long way of the track. We aren't sure which trail we should have taken, but i'll give you the tip that the way that we went was only a track for the roo's. The track log looks rather interesting when you pull it into google earth.
After stumbling upon the track again, we decided that we were on the right path. Though the numbers started going up again... A quick check of the math (remembering that the one with the maths degree did the sums originally), and it turns out that for those dyslexics we would have ended up way off the beaten track.
With the new numbers plugged in, what do you know we are only 38m away!
Easy find, and off we went again. Yep again we didn't take the right track, and again we had to go bush. Soon back on the right track, but only after seeing more roo's and getting to within 1.5m of one. Never seen such a tame roo.
Taking in the great views and with the sun setting behind us, we moved on quickly and completed the loop.
Should have really done these a long time ago, but we will work through them slowly.
Thanks for the great walk Mark.
Dropped in a TB.

The weather gods were good to me today. The rain cleared long enough to find the two Sundews caches.
WP3 is always going to be tricky but with a bit of help from TeamHurtle and I was able to find it. Thanks for the cache and the help.
Straightforward find at final GZ. TFTC. TNLNSL.

WP1 Found car park and gate for next wp no prob.
WP2 Lovely walk from wp1 with great views. Path still a bit slippery but no problems walking with a bit of caution. Finding container took a couple of minutes, but straight forward search. The inside of the container was very wet but the coordinates were easily readable. Hid the container upside down in the hope at any water which runs in will also run out again.
WP3 What a great place to have a picnic. The view is stunning. Unfortunately this was the location of my downfall. I used the hint and that told me where to look, but nothing was found. I will have to email TeamHurtle for help on this one.
WP4 Will try again another day.
The Look Out - I was running out of time and knew I was coming back so I left the lookout for another day.

Nice to see a carpark at the top of Penny's Hill Road now. A favourite spot when Mrs C and I were still single
What a wonderful walk Got all the necessary info and then took the walk to the first waypoint. Managed to slip sideways on the path and ended up with a muddy leg and bottom, so found a stick for the rest of the walk. Had to cross a small stream from all the rain today. Not very wide, but suprisingly about 20cm deep. Also walked right past two kangaroos.
Found next waypoint okay, and assumed I had to stay on small path to the next waypoint. Had some stunning views off the Gorge and there is even a picnic table now to sit and enjoy the views at, although the seat was very wet today. Continued on and after a call found the next waypoint (I had problems seeing black on brown), and then it was off to GZ.
Found a likely GZ but alas no cache Checked other possible spots, but kept striking dirt. Rang the helpline, and seemed to be looking in the right spots. After 30minutes decided to head on to the Lookout.
Look forward to returning though, as I thoroughly enjoyed my walk. Kids were with the Nanna, and Mrs C was at work, so it was a very peaceful walk too
Until next time .... Cheers

Cheers
Was heading towards McLaren Vale to do some caches but thought I would take a different route. As I was going past Onkaparinga Gorge the screen lit up so stopped here instead. A few walking caches was what was required after a week at a Sydney Conference.
Rang the Hurtle hotline to ensure I had the right direction to start then on my way. If a tree falls in the middle of a forest does it make a sound - well there were a few falling today and you could hear them. Plenty of roos and views and some childhood memories of camps. TFTC
Day 323 of non-stop caching.

Success on the second try at this one with a little help from Hurtle, thanks mate the cords were right were you said they would be. I think ill extend my give up time to 45minutes insted of 30 that might in prove my success rate. Cheers for another great cache.

THANKS FOR THE CACHE!
The first and second way points were a breeze with a magnificent hike thrown in but way point three just wasn't there. The cords from two took me straight to the spot were way point three should be going by the photos posted by previous cachers and the clue but a 30 minute search turned up nothing. A bit disappointing but this Onkaparinga series is well and truly on my to do list so ill be back!
It was a hot muggy day for a walk but the occasional breeze was lovely. Found all the clues and caches ok. Left a geocoin so I hope someone visits the cache soon as it's been a while since the last visit. TFTC

Great work with the hide here, took a while for me newbie,
great walk went the long way. Excellent spot for the cache thanks

Finally! It pays to read the logs BEFORE going out. Got to where wp2 should be a week ago (and then read the logs ). After conferring with Hurtle through the week went equipped with wp3 coords and a new container for wp2. The loop is complete again. A great walk with excellent views of the gorge. took tb Thanks Hurtle
Wasted two hours here, would have paid to have read the logs before heading out. Caching aside, the Sundews Ridge Loop Trail is a nice walk in the park.
After reading the logs (before we started) it was Mr Hurtle to the rescue with wp2 co-ords! We pretended everything was in the place and did fuul loop. Even managed to find Sundew lookout on the way!
Left Texas TB that we picked up at the lookout!
Managed 8 of 15 in a day!

Found by Groewrs at 1800.
I didn't really hold high hopes of finding this one, but by following the track and remembering the previous logs and hints I made it to the GZ just after dark. No problems finding this one - I think it was the quickest search of the day!

Found after picking up the Lookout cache during the walk. We had first time cachers Rob, Vanessa and Holly doing their 5th cache with us today, and other Uni friends Tracey, Hayden and Alice.
Lots of blackened trees along the way. We hadn't read the logs before we started this one, and only realised WP2 was missing when we found the blackened tree. A call to Freddo then Hurtle got us enough info to keep going.
Some of our party were a bit upset with me - I'd said it was flat - see how the trail follows the contour lines? I think maybe that was a contour line. Never the less, I enjoyed the walk, and the weather was close to perfect. (photo)
Thanks for a great walk.

#7 for the series.
Thanks to TeamHurtle for emailing me the info on WP2. I can report that not only does the waypoint container no loger exist but the stump it was hidden in is no more than a charred mark on the ground.
After a lengthy search for the required info at WP3, a quick detour to another location and an unfortunate approach through prickle bushes, the cache was in hand.
With rain comming in and a cache hide planned for the afternoon the rest of the series will have to wait.

Rated: for Overall Experience
WP2 is completely gone. I went prepared to replace it, but there is nowhere left to hide anything at the original co-ordinates!
Yeeees, the terrain is getting less flat but the exercise and views of the gorge and the vegetation recovering from the fire make it well worth it for our second find of the day with Miss Wibble. Will be demanding coffee after the next one! Thanks Team Hurtle.
Second find on a gorge-ous caching day with broken_hamish. Interesting walk through the burnt out area, seeing all the regrowth. Approached the final GZ from entirely the wrong direction and ended up covered in prickles! Took TBG May geocoin and dropped off Question Mark geocoin.
Email me for wp3 location. I'm still trying to get there. Something keeps coming up....
Decided to try this after the CFS staging area. Gate sign has been vandalized but I think I got the right coords to goto spot 1. It was right next to the track so I guess it was OK as I have now read there is nothing left. Would be happy to replace it if you want to give me the coords you want inside I can laminate and place in a suitable container.
Thanks
Thanks
Whilst I have not been able to get to the affected waypoint, I will re-enable it and those who are thinking of doing it I will forward the missing co-ords via an email upon request. This offer will only stand until I can get there to repair/replace wp. Good Luck.

Had a hunch this one may have been affected! Will get there after Christmas. Sorry for the inconvienience.
Got a call from z, "lets do Onka", cool no problems, I had completely forgotten about the fires. So we got there and set off on what we thought was the correct direction....Unbelievable... nothing can describe the smell and devastation... there was no undergrowth, we both thought we would encounter snakes today, in reality there was no wildlife at all, which gave the whole place an eerie feel. Stumps smouldering, ash at our feet and the sun beating down on us...
Where are we going again????? well in all fairness the GPS was pointing in the initial direction, then it pointed up a great big hill... I hear Z saying "lets get up on that ridge", so we clambered down in the creek bed and up on the ridge (if the fire had not been through, there would be no way we could have gone this way)....
we eventually found where it should have been and there was nothing (we were hoping for a MacDonalds plastic blob.... something... anything, but nothing). So undeterred i coaxed Z in calling a friend to give us a hint on the next location.
With the hint we initally did set out in the wrong direction so had to climb back up from the gully (all good for me I am sure . the second location was amazing complete devastation all around but was untouched. With the last co-ordinates in our hands we set off for the find. Had two big kangas watching us and I still think i am picking the prickles out of my back... A very interesting walk and worth the look once it is back up.

Where do we start with this little saga?
Having decided to tackle the Onka series this summer (many months ago) this was the first weekend to rock up with some time. Arranged with Miss Jane to have a go during the summer quiet period to keep up the fitness and this seemed perfect.
As we started out we were both expecting to deal with snakes today. However after the first few metres we saw the full extent of the bushfire last week. Basicallt burt out moonscape as far as we could see. We sort of bee-lined for the cache, missing the obvious big track and going via the dam and small track until we were a narrow roo track. Not having to deal with any bush to bash enabled us to take a short cut up to the first WP1 in pretty much a straight line. No snakes, no bush, nothing left apart from some charred tree stumps and plenty of black ash.
We arrived at the fitrst WP and it wasn't looking good. Going by the amount and depth of ash at the base, the location had been burning for a long time. Not even a blobby bit of burnt micro remained.
We called some previous finders who recalled another point so without any real coords we headed off, looking for a track, which we missed. We ended up at ther river, which was burnt too and then back up the hill. Finding the track we headed on and actually found another waypoint that had survived by some miracle and from then the final cache, which was just outside the burnt area. A couple of roos were checking over the cache when we arrived but they signed the log and moved on as we approached.
Unfortunatley the bush around the cache hadn't burnt and getting it was a bit spiky. All in all an excellent cache and the first of 4 in the series we got today.
WP2 has been converted into CO2 and ash.
WP3 and GZ are OK.
Snakes or bashing through the bush is no longer a relevant issue, except very close to GZ. The ash might be a choking hazard on a windy day though and you'll need a shower after doing this one now.

My first cache in this series.
An excellent walk with some very nice views.
Stopped at the picnic table for a rest and to enjoy the scenery.

I lived on minutes away in McLaren Vale for a few years where I was the parish priest and never knew this gem was here. What a find! When you get to WP2 do take the detour down the hill to the river. It is very steep down and ever steeper back up but you will find the most delightful place to have a picnic. Do enjoy. Retrieved TB Leaping Lizard. TNLNSL. Good hunting!

No hat/sunblock needed today and the water was falling from the sky. Slid our way along the trails and had flashbacks over other gorge cache's done previously with the Cachema's . Nice easy finds with great views along the way and finally got to drop of Leaping Lizards TB! Swapped footy tattoos for Geocache Tattoos. Thank TH!
nice walk through this area had to take stinjali for a test drive of the new rav4 started raining at the end and passed this lady walking three times I'm sure she thought we were stalking her TNLN but very enjoyable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WP1- Easy. Astro had a brain spasm with the logic. That is maths teachers for you.
WP2- Easy. Lovely walk and views.
WP3- Oh so hard. We looked and looked, and looked, and looked some more. Tried some help lines and nearly gave up. Then I decided to check the hint.
After I got up from the blow to the head Astro gave me I was good. Only saw a few stars.
WP4- We know this spot. Lovely sundews everywhere. Tried to hover.

A reasonable hike, but sort of flattish so not too bad. Not sure what spasm Freddo was on about at WPT1. His spasm came at WPT3. What we have learned is to read the hints. You think we both would have learnt this by now…Anyway, I snapped a few pictures on the loop. Check them out if you want.
Thanx TeamHurtle, Clear skies, TeamAstro.
This was the 8th Hurtle Onka cache, and probably the one we enjoyed the most, although even this one provided some ‘Donald Duck’ moments . After we encountered the dam, we lost the trail for a while, and ended up down in a gully after following what turned out to be a Claytons track. Contemplated just following the arrow, then thought better of it, esp after some of the others we have done in this series.
“Hmmm, if I were plotting a trail and was going to call it ‘Sundew’s Ridge Loop’, I’d probably put it along that ridge up there ?†Long story, short – we found the trail again.
We must have both slipped A over T a dozen times, as we found the damp, clay trail to provide as much traction as a sheet of glass coated in vaseline [B)]. The stretch between WP 2 & 3 provided the most spectacular scenery of the day and made the whole thing worthwhile. GREAT cache guys. Took a patch and left a blue plastic box.

Finished work today with just enough time to race around the loop track before the sun set.
I've been thinking about putting some caches in this park for a while but its great to have someone else place them, then I get to look for them! Thanks Hurtle.
Swapped a dinosaur and wristband for the cards.
Then just enough light remained to get to the lookout.
Cheers, TFTH.

Well this was a good walk. Saw a number of kangaroos along the way and evidence of much echidan activity. Another first to find for us, this is a good day. Took yellow jeep, left geocoin. This series is shaping up to be a great one. Well done Team Hurtle. Stanleys
Starting the cache off with a Yellow 4x4!
