Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Best access is via Gowrie Park...just follow the signage...but for a more difficult approach you can try the Kings Road access. The latter route is for experienced walkers only as quite steep and arduous.

Had a great day to do this, not too hot & great views.

Our second last day on this particular trip to Tassy and with the weather clearing after yesterday's rain we took the chance to climb Roland. We took O'Neills Track which we found to be an excellent route to the top. Weather stayed fine and we saw not another soul on the walk.

Earlier this month we completed the walk from the Olivers Road Lookout to the GA cache Dick Vandyke completing three caches along the way. That left five more caches on top of the Mount Roland area. After completing our planning, the weather forecasts suggested that today would be the best time in the near future to tackle the ascent of Mount Roland along O'Neills Track. We set off at 7:30am just as the sun rose and made steady progress up the track to O'Neills Creek after which it was much slower climbing the much steeper section to Wolfgang Saddle. We got to the lookout and very welcome seats in a few minutes under three hours where we rested for some time before heading off to look for the five target caches for the day.

After deciding to bypass Minnow Falls we headed off to the Mt Roland summit. The board walk made initial progress rapid. Pace slowed when the board walk ended and the track became slippery due to recent rain. The birds in the bottlebrushes kept us company as the track headed up. The pink conglomerate and very large rocks were also very interesting. We stopped to have a chat with a bush walking couple from Deloraine who were having lunch at the 1km to go mark, the only others we saw today. As we headed across the button grass the wind become stronger and more gusty and the sky began to darken. We left our packs 250m from the base before scrambling up the last 20m to the trig. Unfortunately the hazy conditions and darkening sky reduced the view but still it was still impressive. The wind gusts were so strong that the poor GPS unit was almost horizontal when suspended from the trig tripod. Photos taken we looked around for Happy Birdies.

We started the day with hopes of finding the five caches but a realistic assessment was that a second visit to the area was more likely. To our delight we managed to complete all five and we got back to our car at 6:30pm just as the rain started to become consistent. Although very tired and sore, we were elated that we had had a very successful excursion to the Mount Roland area.

"Found" while on a successful mission to be FTF Hookline's cache. The range of Roland, Vandyke and Claude have wonderful views, absolutely worth the effort to get there.

Camped at O'Neills river before starting out on a lovely morning. Gathered up the easy caches near the campground before embarking on the *real* walk. Pretty good going to start with along a nice, wide 4wd track. Saw one snake on the way up, but the track was so well cleared that the snakes were not a worry. The relentless uphill slog started to get a bit more tough after the log bridge and it was a relief to reach the saddle for a much needed rest and lunch. Unfortunately couldn't find the cache meant to be hidden at the saddle, which was a real bummer, so we continued on to the summit.

Nice walk across the buttongrass plateau along a good path. Beautiful scenery dotted with wildflowers. Slightly tricky scramble up the boulders the last few metres to the trig. Great panoramic views from the top as usual.

Since the previous physical cache here had been archived, I placed one of my own: GA5443 'Happy Birdies' close to the trig. Couldn't bear that such an iconic mountain didn't have a cache at the summit!

Pretty sore and tired by the time we got back down, but glad to have finally crossed this mountain off our list as we'd wanted to do it for years.

Found last summer whilst raining for the triple Top run and found visited again with the CEyrettes on a camping trip and then flashed past the peak (I wish) during the Triple Top race. This would have to be one of the best views on the NW coast and from one of the most iconic mountains that visitors to Tasmania see. I can understand why the chair lift proponents are so active because this view is one that I want to share with so many people. However my 7 year old daughter comfortably made the walk so maybe the chairlift isn't as necessary as publicity. A thoroughly recommended walk.

Another cache to log after an amazing walk. Had waited for a few days in the hope of getting clear skies and we were amply rewarded for our wait. 360 degree views. Glad I didn't have to carry the hardware to set the trig point at the top Laughing Maybe the hard work was done by a chopper unless this trig point is the original hardware which I guess would have been taken up maybe with the help of horses. Shocked
Many thanks for a great cache. Very Happy

I have been to the trig a couple of times before, today I went by while participating in the Triple Top event - which was amazing and doing it on my birthday made it a bit momentous as well. I didn't go the last 50m up to the trig itself, but I figured I was close enough. After that, came the terrible descent to King's Road - it is SO STEEP, for a km!!! Didn't go much on that bit - the rest was amazing. Thanks.

Nice to be back up here again.

Apologies for the appalling photo we had to forge ahead of the rest of the party to try and fit in a visit to minnow falls. Unfortunately we left the camera with them so were left with only an old phone.

Nice day out all in all. Lovely weather. We came up the Kings road route and returned, after Minnow, via the O'neils track with some car shuffling between the two.

It's a nice rewarding track up the Kings road and it was quite nice to enjoy the views and take a little time. Normally this being the way down after the Triple Top we tend to miss most of the views in favour of images of ice cream and burgers.

The O'neils track is very easy and makes the trip to the top of Roland accessible to many more people after all the hard work that has been put in. On both tracks the sudden growth since the fires a couple of years ago offers very welcome shade for most of the journey.

Always worth a visit, if you live in north Tassie you should pop up and try to spot your house.

Got to the top - with the best views ever !

Decided to access via the Kings Road track with geo-pooch...all was well to start with until entering the long steep gully. 3/4 the way up the going became almost impossible for 4paws and time was running out due to late start....so had to leave my buddy tethered in a comfy spot while I forged on ahead. Turned out to be a correct decision as this track is impossible for canines without lots of assistance with 4m vertical climbs and rather large rock ledges to negotiate. The wind chill was getting noticeable...even though there was only a wispy breeze. At the Trig my hands started getting numb straight away...so some quick pics...take in the smoky view...then head down to re-unite with 4paws.....who was pretty happy to see me back. Going down was decidedly easier though hard on the legs. Finally made it back in 4hr 40min in fast fading light. This access was an awesome experience with the track passing through huge cliff lines...really impressive. This track would have to be one of the hardest if not hardest climb I've done...not for the feint hearted. A memorable day....many thanks GCA....Cheers.

Walked the Mt Roland track with Neribil today and 4 others from the North West Walking Club
Weather was fantastic and the views were unbelievable
It was fairly windy and chilly so we took some photos and headed off pretty quickly but a very enjoyable walk.
Thanks GCA for the cache

TrigPoints and standard geocaches are different types of caches and can happily co-exist along side each other.
For those who seek TrigPoints and standard geocaches, they can consider themselves lucky and can claim a "two for one" deal provided they meet the requirements of both cache listings.
