Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Access:

  • Leave vehicle at Neranwood park, S 028° 07.448' E 153° 17.560'
  • Trailhead is across the road and slightly south at S 028° 07.460' E 153° 17.541' This well defined track is called Neranwood Track, colloquially known as Pollys
  • Waypoint 2, S 028° 07.173' E 153° 16.735' Turn left, track now called Wunburra Spur Break.
  • Continue on this track until you’re about 40m from GZ
  • Final 40m a minor bush bash.
  • Return the same route

Neranwood Park to waypoint 2 (junction) is about 2km and very steep. This short distance has over 300m difference in elevation. Walking poles are advantageous throughout this walk, especially on descents. Many people slip. Take care and know your limits. If you’re not comfortable going up then please consider aborting this hike because the way down is even more challenging.

Total distance ~8km

Allow 4+ hours

Elevation change ~500m

Know your limitations. Easy for some, impossible for others. See gallery for topo and satellite trek images.

Yesterday I visited three sites looking for evidence of past Trig stations. Nothing was found. One spot in particular would have been a grand site in its day! Oh well, I will still continue my extensive searches Smile

Today is International Mountain day so naturally I had to visit a mountain. Mount Wunbarra. I decided a while ago to place a GC cache around here which I have now done. Now I need to link this GZ with another set of coordinates. I have ideas. No rush, I’ll work something out.

The blaze here is a splendid example. It’s nice to see it’s still in great condition. More images taken, just because. Time to return to the van for a snack and a celebration beer.. you know.. International Mountain day and all, #MountainsMatter

I saw a large goanna doing its thing on the way back and also noticed a leech wanting a free meal and a ride. Not today! Images in gallery.

So I was looking through old maps of Springbrook and the surrounding areas (because I'm a mega-map-nerd!) and I spotted a Control Station near a track. I fired up Queensland Globe and discovered this is the location of a Geodetic Station.. I must explore. Coincidently a Geo-buddy was out from Ireland and was also keen to explore so we met up and off we went UP Neranwood Break. I've been up this many times. It's VERY steep. I knew the return descent was going to be even more challenging but that was a problem for our future selves to deal with haha. We arrived at the junction with Wunbarra Spur Break and turned left. A steep descent followed then up again and we arrived about 40m from GZ. In we went. A minor bush bash got us to the prize. An awesome blaze was found! It's in great condition, in fact the best I've seen. The witness post was then found. A satisfying day! Images taken and a high-five actioned Smile

On the way back I started wondering about setting up a GC cache for this location. Time will tell.

If you don't keep focused and take your time down and also side-step the steepest sections there is a high chance of slipping over.. which we both did haha. Thanks for the cache Smile
