Description

Tomah TS4394

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Tomah.

Serial number is: TS4394.

Last Inspected on: March, 1976.

Elevation is: 1000 metres.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

On private property but easy to spot from the fence line. Lovely day driving through the mountains.

Sophoutloud and I needed an excuse to get out of the house so we decided to drive 'Bells Line' to Lithgow and grab a few trigs on the way through. We managed to grab 13 across the day to bump up our trig count significantly. we had a great day out and most of the trigs we found were in great conditions, some even looked like they had a new coat of paint. This one was an old one but it was exciting to see a different form of trig in an area that had been ravaged by last summers fires, there were a few homes lost on this road..

Out collecting a couple of cashes today and we had to stop here. Very interesting driving to the end of their road and seeing the fire damage still. This area right around the trig sight and the trig in general was very luck to escape the blaze. It came close!! A lovely area and cool find haven’t see a trig like it before.

On an extremely hot sickly day there was not much else to do besides computer or the box so I went for a drive & completed roadside virtual & trigs – this was 1 of them in the greater area.
This 1 was the last for the day, as I was getting down the mountain the weather turned & a drop of 10 degrease happened, lightening happening in the distance, made it home before it dumped.
About the trig a very nice 1 completed - thanks Clan GriffinClan Griffin

We were driving the Bells Line of Road headed for Orange - a quick diversion and we had this one, it is hard to spot even from right in front of it....

22-Dec-17
Brought the kids up for some caches and lunch in Blackheath. Love this one.

01-Oct-17
Came to visit the botanical gardens today so I popped round the corner to find this trig. An unusual setting but still easy to spot from the street.

11-Jul-17
stopped by here for a happy snap as I drove up Bells Line of Road.

I liked the round stone walled plinth the trig was in the middle of.

16-Apr-16
stopped near this one for the quick photo while in the Mt Tomah area with all the trees around on someones property made it hard to spot. Thanks for the trig

Someone's backyard....oh well, at least it right by the fence....

05-May-14
On a sunny windless Autumn afternoon and Tomah was certainly asight in the dappled light. Behind fencing and it did take a shuffle for the photos. Some rust but an admirably sized trig.

26-Feb-14
Quite a different trig to the usual style up here. Could hardly spot it amongst the trees. But it's pretty tall like Aiken at Pennant Hills. Would love to see the base but the stone wall blocks the view.

29-Oct-12
Now that is an interesting style... very old!

19-Aug-12
1200, another Trig found by Geoson and I on our way up the Bells Line of Road, there was no-one about to ask permission to have a look up close so we stayed on the outside of the Fence Smile

11-Aug-12
1716 Had been here many years ago to photograph this trig (actually, 27/2/1985, 1000, on a Wednesday off work in the laundry, at 'the San'.
I yelled over the fence to the owners to ask permission to photograph the trig, and they were more than happy (while they were landscaping their garden).
Not much changed over the years.

30-Jul-11
Trig number 6 for the day's trigging along the Bells Line of Road with pjmpjm.
Lovely old steel structure with the old type wooden mast, 2 of the vanes have gone missing, but it is nice to see it has survived the wind storm of a few days ago, a lot of the larger trees in the area were not so lucky.

Nearly missed this in the early light.
Man it was cold up her on Saturday morning - lots and lots of frost on the ground

28-May-11
Second trig find our my way back from a nice ride over the mountains; this is an oldie!

23-Dec-10
This one was a bit tougher to spot than some of the other trigs but it sure is an impressive trig.

Found this on the way out to Bathurst for Christmas.

23-Dec-10
At first I didn't see this rusty old trig, sitting in amongst the trees on private property. For a few seconds I was inadvertently looking for a standard concrete pedestal and a black disk. But then I saw it, much higher than I expected, and very rusty and frail-looking.

But it survives! And it's not too hard to take some decent photos from behind the fence, near Skyline Road. I wish I could have got closer but didn't want to infringe on someone's yard.

Very interesting. Will upload my photos a little later this evening.

'Three Thumbs Up' for something a bit different.

19-Sep-10
Nice drive to this cache which is just over the fence on private property.
