___________________________

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Great group walk in the Goo with a little side trip to Old Joe.

This old fella is one of two GCA trigs that I can log today after a huge, tiring trek with 8 caching friends out to find numerous GC Mystery caches that we have solved over the last couple of months during the COVID 19 lock down. TFTT Geocaching Australia Clan CerberusClan Cerberus

Around chasing some puzzles.

We'd seen this trig from a distance a couple of days ago but thought it looked too far to walk to on this trip. Maybe it was but this morning Purplepeopleater and I found ourselves up close and personal with TS3617, "Old Joe". He's looking in fine form, for his age. NSW cites it as an ACT trig but it's on the NSW side of the fence (by mere metres) and 1978 survey was by NSW DMR.

Discovered yet another trig, this time whilst claiming some GS caches in Goorooyarroo. I note that this cache is documented as being in the ACT but if the fence is anything to go by, the trig is in fact on the NSW side. But I'm happy to claim this my second ACT trig so all good Dancing

Been here plenty of times but never grabbed the trig. Good to finally get this one. There was an icy breeze blowing today

Finally had a chance to visit this trig. I have been here before, a long time ago, but I wasn’t into trigs back then! – But I must say that I am becoming more and more disillusioned with GCA trigs. Quite a few years ago I climbed very many mountains in the ACT in search of trigs! They were prized caches! However, now-a-days, I notice that more and more cachers are taking photos from a couple of km away (ie they didn’t climb the mountain), or worse still, they do not provide a photo at all (even though the requirement is to provide a photo). On top of that, more and more “trigs” are being published that are certainly not trig points! At best, they are survey markers. All this dilutes the value of GCA trigs to the point that I now only log them, if I happen to be there for other reasons. I know that GCA has the “anything goes” policy to encourage cachers – but to me that is a negative… I would prefer that there was someone regulating what was going on here. – Having said all that – this is a fantastic location! The views are outstanding! Well worth a visit!

Drive past this one almost every day. About time that I stopped to take a photo.

Picked off this one from a distance as we travelled home from a week in the snow.

I could see how steep some of the ways were up this hill, so rather than take the shortest route I approached from a less steep direction; the end furthest from Horse Park Drive. I came with my bicycle and cycled along the track until I passed the hill and then I headed back across country towards it, leaving my bicycle behind and then walking. The hill was not a problem from this direction, and I took it slow and steady and then I was at the top. After photographing the trig to log, I went after the cache and it was soon found. Good views from up here and I could see the steep slope I avoided by taking the route I did. The shadow is me waving at the camera Very Happy.

929. While looking for some unsolved GC caches ( Razz ) we stumbled upon this trig. And now I've seen Sol has a heap of caches for TP finds I might need to look at getting a few more under my belt - which would make an interesting photo.

TFTT and the roast.

Found on a day of walking around the reserve with McPhan, the day starting out very foggy but clearing to one of those lovely sunny winter days that are so good in Canberra. Thanks for the find.

Found on a cold and frosty morning out in Gungahlin. Once we got one of the caches at the bottom of the hill, the HUUUGE walk to the top started. This was such a steep hill, luckily we went on the least steep part of the hill, even though it was still pretty steep. A beautiful area and some fantastic 360 degree views from the top. A quick photo was taken and then it was off to the cache. TFTC Geocaching Australia!

I went for a walk with the Canberra Bushwalking Club but had run out of battery on gps by the time I got up here. So I grabbed the trig but not the nearby cache. Will have to come back again...

#GA43 - 17:30; The second of two trigs on the way to twelve GC/GA caches found on a border walk from Mulligans Flat Road through to Horse Park Drive to clear a few of the remaining traditional caches I have left within the ACT between the Federal and Barton Highways. Got a couple of great pics of aircraft taking off and landing at Canberra airport. Approaching from the north, there is a spot where you look straight along the runway and in the evening it was all lit up. Glad I approached from the north, but about half way down the southern face in failing light, I was having second thoughts about my plans to pick up a couple more after this one! TFTC GA Shhhhhhh.

Great views! Thanks

Grabbed a selfy while up here snooping around. Great views and well worth the walk.

Did a Mountain Bike/walking trip to this trig and nearby Gooroo Trig, although mainly walking to this one. In fact left the bike chained to a fence just below the Trig and walked up. Impressive views of Gungahlin and the Brindabellas.

Certainly a decent climb up this hill. It guarantees a sweat even on a cool winters day. Really nice view from here.

Fantastic hill I have been avoiding too long. Not quite as bad as I expected. Great view. Thanks. Albida

27-Mar-10
A beautiful day - for a MTB ride - so why not ride up here and collect two trigs, enjoyed the ride up & DOWN. Great views.

HEY, this Trig actually HAS A NAME - see my pics of the trig feet. I have renamed the trig to suit. OLD JOE GALLEHER TRIG

11-Mar-10
Decided to walk the 2 trigs and 2 traditionals in this area this afternoon. A nice hike up the hill from the recommended parking area. Everything was lovely and green with the amount of rain we have had lately and it was fun to watch the planes come right over this hill on their approach to Canberra airport. Their are many fences all around this area so it was hard to tell what was private property and what wasn't. Top spot. Will add photos tonight.

Visited this trig on the 18 Apr 09

I reserve 5 thumbs up for a special place that hurts to get there.
Old Joe, when combined with Gooroo Trig is a two hour five star.

The rain squalls passed over earlier in the day so I decided enough sitting around is enough sitting around. Left the dogs behind : ( and went straight at the south gully - 15 contours in half a K. I will sleep well tonight though the dogs still need walking.
Wind like you can only get on the summit of a winter wrapped Canberra Hill but I still built up a good sweat...

The trig is just over the fence on rural lease but as you can see, it is close enough to get a good pic.

Time to run across the ridge to find GOOROO.

While I will claim a *FTF* on this one it really belongs to Two Leg Drive.
