Description

Observatory Mast TS10090

The official name of the Trig Point is: Observatory Mast.

Serial number: TS10090.

Last inspected: No Data.

Elevation: 60m.

This is a passive Trig Point it is the Flag pole / lightning rod on top of the Observatory.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

07-Dec-18
Great spot. 2 trigs too!

02-Jul-18
This one had us a bit confused first. However on further reading and looking at early logs it shows that maybe it is the weather vane with the lightning rod on top, so that is the photo we have posted TFTT

Had a few hours to kill between trains in Sydney today so decided to cache my time away. This was one of them. I came to visit the Observatory and had to cache whilst here of course. Found the nearby cache and then these 2 trigs.
I want a tower and weather vein like this! I mean this size and all. Very Happy

21-Jan-18
Wandering about The Rocks area today. One of the trigs I visited. TFTC.

09-Nov-17
Found 2:15pm. I was in the area and finally got the chance to do these and also I took the opportunity to look inside, something I have never done even though so many years in Sydney. Usually I've been past here late and it has been closed. Now which one is truly the trig? The ships mast looking structure or the weather cock on the tower which quite prominent? It seems some folks have done one and some the other in photo's so I figured I might post two, but my take is the mast structure.

06-Jul-17

13-Sep-16
Whist in Sydney for some training I had an evening available for a bit of a walk so I went up Observatory hill and over to Benangaroo park for three trigs and a few other caches.

Thanks

05-May-16
Came at night - then came back to get closer the next day. Decided to use the night pic because I got the evening star directly above the beacon.

1933, 10/1/2016 While walking around trying to find the entrance (southern side) I was taking some photos, and later realised that one was needed for this Passive trig. Bargain. One more to the list.

04-Jul-15
Having walked from the North side of the bridge I found I was running a little late so had to skip the south pylon trig and just came straight to this one. The photo didn't work to well as it was on dusk and I was taking the photo into the light

Thanks to my very good friend (He knows who he is!) I have been introduced to Geocaching and although I am not quite getting the caching bit I am however quite taken by the trigonometric Points.
Having heard my friend go on and on about their use and value as well as their history I have decided to log a few with my friend to hold my hand for now!

exploring the city before heading over for vivid festival

10-Feb-14
Found on a short weekend trip to Sydney, to watch "The Music of Queen" at the Opera House. While visiting and touring the observatory, we quickly took our photo for this trig. Missed the 1pm ball drop unfortunately. Such a cool place that was fun to look around. TFTC GCA!

#GA28 - 11:00; Found myself wandering pas between caches, so stopped for a quick photo op, then on my way to The Rocks. TFTC GA! Clapping

10-Nov-12
There's some history to this waypoint - there's a small stack of stones nearby that surveyors used to climb but then time and technology happened. Visit between 10:00-17:00 to see that, it's within the observatory's fence.

23-Oct-12
Reached after a climb up from the Argle Cut, magnificent view from the hill.

22-Mar-12
A lunchtime find while walking around the Rocks.

06-Mar-12
I found myself at the observatory today while on my way to a nearby GC cache. Easy to spot the passive trig, I took a few photos then sat down to enjoy the views from this spot.

Years ago friends & I had a 'How to Host a Murder' party here at the observatory, so I had some pleasant memories to think back on during my brief stop here.

01-Mar-12
loaded up the Android while doing a nearby cache. A quick trig find

18-Nov-11
A lovely spot to visit! One day I am keen to go indoors. TFTC

05-Jun-11
Found early on a peaceful Sunday morning. Luckily, it was nice and early and therefore very quiet up on the hill.

I was rather disappointed to realise that we couldn't actually get to the trig point, but never mind, it was still a nice view (Trigs are all about the views in my book Laughing )

29-May-11
Found on a wonderful days caching around Sydney!

11-May-11
Quick walk whilst working on a GC multi in the same area

04-May-11
What to do when you are in town and can not sleep, go for a walk and pick up a cache or two. The view from here is better at night and the trig was quickly grabbed

18-Apr-11
Found this one today while in the area. The wind vane, lightning rod is the passive Trig.

02-Dec-10
Always great to find another trig! And I guess this one is the oldest of them all.

Walked through The Rocks and the legendary 'Argyle Cut' and enjoyed the historical setting very much. I only wish I had had more time.

This was the sixth of seven caches today, so I feel like a had a successful day.

If you visit this trig, make sure you allow plenty of time to explore a fascinating part of Sydney.

'Three Thumbs Up' for The Rocks and its environs.

16-Nov-10
This is a great spot to observe Very Happy the history and beauty of Sydney. I wandered down from work and was lucky that the gates were still open (weven though it was dark). As it turns out, that probably would not have been an issue - I had trouble finding the point as I was looking around where the GPS was pointing .. oh .. snapped it!

Thanks for being my guide.

15-Nov-10
Now that's what you call a trigpoint! A glorious day to tramp up here on a lightning trip to Sydney. Even with a wedding going on (I gather there are plenty here) it was easy to stay out of the way.
Thanks GCA !

03-Oct-10
While I am limiting myself to 1 physical cache a day this Trig doesnt count hehe. So I revisited the Hill and got the snap I needed on a wet and windy sunday Very Happy

29-Aug-10
This one was a bit more fancy than the ones in the Blue Mountains!

26-Jul-10
Had to go and climb the SW Pylon of the bridge today, so thought I would stop on the way and walk up the hill. Not your usual shaped trigpoint!

13-Jul-10
A nice walk to this one with the kids from The Rocks. We visited in between tours so will have to come back for the tour.

03-Nov-09
Tried tpo find 5 physical caches today - failed to find the lot(archived/WP2 uncertain/muggles/short of time etc), but at least this one was still here Smile
Went for a different view from the previous cachers.

10-Oct-09
Tronador has explained it well. A lovely place to visit with excellent views over the harbour. A stroll around the grounds also revealed the earlier trig point "cairn"

07-Oct-09
This trig is located on top of the Sydney Observatory tower. Whilst you cannot climb to the top, as this section of the building is closed to the public, it is possible to get to 11 m of the trig point by standing directly under the tower. The Observatory dates back to 1857 and was used in astronomical and meteorological studies. Prior to this a signal station was located here in 1825 to receive messages from south Head about ships entering the harbour. This hill is the highest natural elevation in the Sydney CBD.
