Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Our second log for this TP, 11 years after the first. The family has grown to over twice the size of our first visit and all enjoyed the walk, the views and the attempts to recreate the original photos! The trig point lies forlornly on the ground, presumably removed because it blocked the signal of the nearby "Starfire 3000", a commercial attempt to augment GPS which will soon be as obsolete as the trig point itself. Technology marches on, but I often wish we were better at preserving our technical and scientific heritage.

Was out doing some cache maintenance on the Prime Ministers Series, but managed to get some finds in as well.

Driveby on this one today. Smile

A walk to the Peters Hill trig is a lovely compliment to the two nearby caches, "Peter's View" and "Where's the china". We came in from the north past these two caches.

It's an easy drive to Marschall's Hut past the two pioneer cemetries and then a short ascent has you on top of the ridge and on the Heysen Trail. This part of the trail has incredible views of both the Gilbert and Barossa(?) valleys and will lead you right to the trig point and the adjacent phone tower. The trig point has its own logboook going back to 1988 - no geocaching.com.au back then!

We met the landowner, James Huppatz, while on the trail. An entry in the "Peter's View" logbook indicates that he's given permission or at least is aware of the caches on his land.

We took our three year old and our eight month old on this trek and with a picnic included it took us three hours to do all three caches. Our three year old enjoyed the walk and the views, aided by a wide range of motivational techniques to get her to the trig point and back!

*FTF* - well, first to log anyway!
